Many major airlines are including a free personal item with a basic economy ticket but it needs to fit underneath your seat in order to be allowed.

The good news is that many domestic airlines in the United States, such as American, Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit Airlines, all share the same standard personal item size limit of 18 x 14 x 8 inches, which gives you the chance to have just one bag for multiple airlines.

What You Need to Know About Personal Items

A personal item is any bag that can fit underneath the airplane seat in front of you. If a bag is too large to fit underneath the seat it will considered carry-on baggage and will have to placed in the overhead bin. Travelers with Basic Economy tickets, are often only allowed one personal item bag and will be charged an extra fee for any carry-on item they board with.

Packing Test

Our packing test is simple - how many t-shirts can fit inside the main compartment? This will give you a standard way to visualize what can fit inside and will be very useful if you plan on ditching the carry-on bag for your next trip and just bringing a personal item to take advantage of cheap basic economy tickets. We used a men's size small t-shirt for our testing.

Say goodbye to baggage fees! The Knack Pack Series 1 has to be one of our favorite travel backpacks for travel thanks to its expandable travel compartment and myriad of clever travel features.

It's the little things that make the Knack Pack it such a pleasure to use, such as lockable zippers, a trolley sleeve to attach the bag to a suitcase, and anti-microbial lining on the inside to prevent stinky smells.

Knack Packs come in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. For use as an under-seat bag, we recommend going with the size Small, which can fit underneath the most airline seats when fully expanded. Our testing: We found that the Knack Pack Series 1 Small can fit eight t-shirts inside the main compartment and an additional 20 t-shirts inside the expandable packing compartment, giving you a total of 28 t-shirts!

Although the Knack Pack offers the most packing space out of any bag on this list, it measures slightly over the 18x14x8 personal item measurements with a 9” depth (the maximum is 8”) when fully expanded. Just be careful not to overpack this bag when expanded and you should have no issues fitting the Knack Pack underneath your airplane seat.

One of our favorite features of the Db Hugger backpack is its top pocket, which provides quick access to small items such as headphones, chewing gum, and other flying essentials without requiring you to remove the backpack from underneath the airline seat. The Db Hugger also includes a 13" laptop sleeve on the outside, making it easy to access your tech without having to fuss with your packing.

Our testing: The Db Hugger 20L can fit 19 t-shirts inside the main compartment and doesn't balloon out to accidentally add more inches like other laptop backpacks when packed full. The secret weapon is Db's Rib Cage Technology that gives the backpack its structured shape while keeping it lightweight.

Although this backpack only has a 14 liter carrying capacity, it actually a roomy 14 liters and more than enough room for travel essentials like a laptop, a light jacket and tech pouches. Our testing: The Chrome Ruckas 14L Backpack can fit 16 t-shirts inside the main compartment. We appreciate how this backpack does a great job at holding it's shape and not bulging out too much when packed full. However, this backpack really shines as a small pack for in-flight entertainment and comfort staples like tech, sweaters and a neck pillow. If you are looking for the perfect one-bag travel bag to avoid airline fees, you might one to go with another option with more internal packing room.

Unlike most other backpacks on the market, the tomtoc Votage-T50 Backpack was designed from the ground up to be used as a personal item backpack on flights. Its dimensions fall well under the coveted 14" x 18" x 8" size limit when fully packed. This backpack is also chock full of travel-specific features that many other backpacks overlook. Our favorite are the thick handles on each side of the bag to make it easy to grab the backpack from both underseat storage and overhead compartments. Add in a trolley sleeve for attaching the backpack to rolling luggage and you have the perfect companion for weekend getaways and business trips.

The main compartment on this backpack was made for easy packing. We could easily fit 2-3 days worth of clothing inside the main compartment. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on if you are light or heavy packer but it’s fair to say that the tomtoc Votage-T50 makes a great option for one-bag carry on quick trips. 

Our testing: The tomtoc Voyage-T50 20L can fit 20 t-shirts inside the packing compartment. When you consider that you still have a separate tech compartment that can hold a laptop, tablet and accessories in the rear as well as exterior pockets for extra storage, you are looking at a lot of packing space for such a compact bag. We found that the front of the backpack will bulge outward when overpacked. However, even when the bag is stuffed to the brim it will still fall under the 8-inch depth requirement for airline travel.

Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15"

The Fjallraven Kanken is a favorite amongst travelers and it's easy to why! The Kanken is made from a tough Vinylon-F material that keeps the bag's square shape so that you don't have to worry about going over the personal item maximum size when stuffing it full. This is the kind of peace of mind you'll be thankful for when bag on strict flights.

Don't be fooled by the Kanken's small size! Anyone traveling with a basic economy ticket on Frontier or Spirit Airlines will appreciate the wide open main compartment that can fit more than you think. This is thanks to the Kanken's simple construction. There aren't many pockets on the inside to take up much needed packing room.

Our testing: The Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15 can fit 22 t-shirts inside the main packing area while still giving you the outside laptop sleeve for your tech and a pocket up front for smaller items. No matter how you pack the Kanken, it will always stay under the airline size restrictions.

If you want more packing room, we recommend going with the larger Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 17 which measures a little larger at 16.53 x 11.81 x 7.08 inches

Troubadour is known for their great quality backpacks and you can be sure to expect lots of pockets for organization and a high end design that is sure to turn some heads at the airport. The Bivy Tote Backpack is no exception to this rule. It gives you lots of space on the inside to pack for a short trip and must-have pockets for water bottles, small travel items and a laptop.

The fact that you can turn it into a tote bag scores some big points if you plan on using it as a daybag at your destination. Need a nice bag for dinner? This is the bag you'll want to bring. Expecting rainy weather? No problem, the Bivy is made with water resistant materials and zippers (in fact, it's one of our favorite waterproof backpacks for women).

Our testing: The Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack can fit 24 t-shirts inside the main compartment making it a great option for one-bag trips. This bag does have a tendancy of ballooning when overpacking, making it wider than the stated 11-inch width but it does not go over the 18 x 14 x 8 maximum size in linear inches. In other words, even if you stuff it full, this bag can squeeze underneath the seat because it’s not structured. Was that too confusing? We hope not.

Inside we were able to fit our in-flight essentials like a laptop, water bottles and light jacket. So, if you are looking for a bag that can be used for multi-day travel packing, you might want to look at some of the other options on this list.

Our testing: The Sherpani Soleil backpack can fit only 14 t-shirts inside the main compartment. This backpack isn't ideal as a packing backpack for one-bag travel but we do recommend it as a personal item when paired with a larger carry-on bag or checked luggage. The built-in luggage sleeve makes it super easy to attach to luggage for easy airport carry.

Some of our favorite features include water bottle pockets both inside and outside of the bag, a separate padded laptop sleeve and plenty of exterior pockets for quick access to travel essentials.

Traveling with a checked bag? No problem. The Everlane Renew Transit even includes a pass-through strap so that you can attach it to rolling luggage for hands-free carry at airports and hotels.

Our testing: We found that the Everlane ReNew Transit can fit 24 t-shirts inside the main compartment, making it one of the roomiest backpacks we have tested while still keeping under the 14 x 9 x 18 size restrictions.

Some great features you can expect from the Matein Travel Laptop backpack are lots of pockets for organization, a hidden pocket for valuables and a passport and a USB port for charging. Matein doesn't say what the capacity of this backpack is but we guess it's around 20-25 liters.

Our testing: The main compartment of the Matein Travel Laptop backpack can fit 22 t-shirts making it a great Spirit or Frontier Airlines personal item bag for packing to avoid additional charges. When packed full the depth of the Matein backpack is closer to the 8" depth personal item limit but will still be compliant.

  This backpack is also one of the most comfortable backpacks we have tested. The backpack straps are very cushioned. And the back panel features supportive foam panels for breathability and support.

  The Daily Plus backpack is slightly bigger than Able Carry's Daily Backpack. It has more pockets, better organization but with the same classic design. If choosing between the two, go with the Daily Plus.

Chrome Barrage Cargo

The Chrome Barrage Cargo is one of the toughest commuter backpacks on the market. It's waterproof, so your stuff stays dry even in the worst weather. Our favorite feature is the cargo net on the outside. It gives you extra storage for stuff like bike helmet, shoes, or bags from unexpected shopping trips. The roll top also allows you to use the Barrage Cargo as an expandable backpack to add more room inside by unrolling the top.

We have to be honest and say that this isn't an urban laptop backpack. In fact, there isn't even a padded laptop sleeve. Instead this is a backpack for those who need a tough-as-nails waterproof bag over a backpack with a million pockets. It's a commuter bag for those who value simplicity over marketing gimmicks.

The Chrome Barrage Cargo does not have a padded laptop sleeve, instead it's just one big waterproof bucket for your stuff. No laptop compartment. No million pockets for school supplies. Just a good reliable roll top backpack.

  But we had to include the Barrage Cargo for its construction. It's tough and reliable.

  The outer shell of the Barrage Cargo is made of rugged 1050D nylon, and the inside of the main compartment is lined with a heavy-weight waterproof tarp. The shoulder straps can be adjusted with metal buckles, not plastic. Add in Chrome's signature seat-belt sternum strap buckle and better control over weight distribution with heavy loads. If this backpack ever does fall apart (doubt), Chrome has you covered with a lifetime guarantee.

Troubadour Pioneer Backpack

Troubadour does two thing very well: water resistance and comfort. They also have amazing pockets. Ok, so it does three things very well.

The Troubadour Pioneer can be best described as a jack of all trades. It's a sleek backpack for business days. A gym bag when you need it thanks to its bottom shoe compartment. And most of all, the highly water resistant urban backpack you've been looking for.

  First of all, this backpack compact at only 23.5 liters that doesn't give you the bulky profile of bigger backpacks. This is a huge plus if you find yourself navigating crowded areas in the city. But what it lacks in size it makes up in organization. If you need a backpack with a spot for everything, then this is the backpack for you. There are plenty internal pockets for every thing from a phone to tech chargers. The outside of the bag also gives you two water bottle holders and extra pockets for small items like a phone or wallet. Pair these features with waterproof zippers and you have the perfect urban daypack.

DB THE RAMVERK Backpack

The Db Ramverk is a clamshell backpack designed for urban creatives. What sets the Ramverk apart is its special lay-flat main compartment, which makes it easy to pack large items clothes or a camera cube. Inside, there are also mesh pockets to help you stay organized with small items.

As a commuter bag, the Db Ramverk is incredibly stylish. It has soft adjustable shoulder straps for all-day comfort. Additionally, the bag is made of PU leather with metal hardware, which gives it a handsome appearance that matches well with life in the city.

  As an urban laptop backpack, Db includes a separate padded laptop compartment that was designed to fit a up to a 15” Macbook Pro. Chargers, cables and tech accessories can all be stored inside the numerous mesh pockets that line the main compartment.

  One feature that Db doesn’t get enough credit for is their innovative rib cage construction that allows for a lightweight and slim backpack without compromising on internal packing room. Instead of traditional foam padding, Db uses ABS “ribs” that are not only much lighter than traditional panels but also provides great protection to the inside of the bag.

There is nothing worse than trying to find small items inside a dark pack. tomtoc solves this by lining the inside with a bright orange fabric so that you can quickly spot your items. How to Choose a Waterproof College Backpack

When choosing a waterproof college backpack, it's important to consider how you'll access the main compartment. This is where you'll keep your important items like textbooks, notes, and laptops, so you want to make sure they stay dry.

When it comes to waterproof backpacks there are three main types of main compartment entries you’ll encounter:

ZIPPER ACCESS

One type of access is through a zipper. Most school backpacks have a single zipper to open the main compartment. However, most zippers are not wateprroof, so you need to look for a backpack that has water-resistant waterproof zippers. Waterproof zippers are coated to keep water out, like ones made by YKK AquaGuard and Aquaseal.

LID ACCESS

Another type of access is through a lid. Backpacks with lids have a flap that folds over the main compartment, providing extra protection against the elements. This creates a barrier between the top of the backpack, where rain and snow can land, and the main compartment.

Usually, there is a zipper or drawstring underneath the lid to fully close and secure the main compartment. Lids are common in outdoor and technical backpacks, but you can also find them in school and everyday backpacks.

ROLLTOP ACCESS

A third type of access is through a rolltop. Rolltop backpacks have extra fabric at the top that you can roll down to close the main compartment. This type of access is very popular for waterproof backpacks because it offers great water resistance. When you compress the rolltop, it creates a seal and blocks water from getting inside. Rolltop backpacks are often seen in outdoor activities like biking, hiking, surfing, and snow sports. It's important to choose a rolltop backpack made of either waterproof or water-resistant material to prevent water from penetrating when it's wet. Waterproof Materials

When choosing a waterproof backpack for college, it's important to consider the type of material used to make the backpack. The material should either be water resistant or coated to be waterproof.

Water resistant fabrics are woven tightly to stop water from soaking in. Some examples of water resistant fabrics are high denier nylon, polyester, and canvas. Nylon types like Cordura and Ballistic nylon are naturally water resistant and are good choices for a water resistant backpack for college. Other fabrics like X-Pac and sailcloth are also naturally water resistant.

But when it comes to making a backpack completely waterproof, you usually need more than just the fabric. That's why most waterproof backpacks have a coating to keep water out. Here are three common types of backpack coatings:

1. TPU Coating: TPU is a type of plastic coating that provides good resistance to wear and tear. Backpack manufacturers like using TPU because it's less likely to crack compared to other coatings, while still remaining flexible.

2. DWR Coating: DWR stands for "durable water resistant." It's a popular coating for rain jackets and outdoor clothing. It's breathable and strong, which makes it a good choice for waterproofing backpacks. DWR coats individual fibers, allowing water to roll off the fabric before it can seep in.

3. PU Coating: PU is often used as imitation leather in bags and small goods. In fabrics, PU provides durability and resistance to wear, along with good waterproofing. It's breathable and lightweight. Many backpack manufacturers prefer PU coating because it's cheaper than TPU and other waterproofing methods.

What size backpack do you need?

The first thing you should decide when looking for a backpack for college is its size. Larger backpacks (23L+) usually have roomier main compartments and extra pockets for smaller items. If you plan on carrying lots of text books, binders and notebooks around campus then a larger backpack may be the correct choice.

But not everyone need a huge main compartment for school. College students who use their laptops for note-taking may do well with a smaller and lighter backpack with a secure laptop compartment.

THINK ABOUT ORGANIZATION

When looking for a waterproof backpack for college, don't forget about organization. Most waterproof backpacks are designed for specific activities like biking, surfing, and fishing. Because of this, they may not have all the pockets and organization features you need for school.

Size: Timbuk2 Authority vs Division Backpacks

The Timbuk2 Authority Deluxe laptop backpack is larger than the Division and leaves a larger footprint on the back when worn. We found that shorter people will find the Division to be a better fit.

As for internal capacity, the Authority gives you 20 liters while the Division only gives you 18 liters. Timbuk2 has changed the capacity of these backpacks in 2023. So if you see the old capacities of 28 liters for the Authority and 21 liters for the Division, this is why. In our opinion the new capacities better reflect the main sections of these backpacks.

Although the Authority backpack has a larger capacity, we will explain later on why the Division might be a better choice for people who carry bulky items.

Materials and Comfort

Both Timbuk2 backpacks use the same materials and offer the same amount of water resistance. You can expect the same recycled nylon external material with a waterproof boot bottom. The compression strap buckles are made of plastic.

We are really impressed with the back panel and shoulder straps. The signature Timbuk2 back panel has a unique "bubble" padded design that is very comfortable. As a result, both the Division and Authority pack feel about the same when worn. Each backpack also includes an adjustable sternum strap that can be removed.

Additionally, both the Timbuk2 Authority and Division feature a trolley sleeve, making them convenient for attaching to wheeled luggage while traveling.

To say these backpacks feel the same is an understatement. They feel nearly identical from zippers to shoulder straps.

Authority vs Division: Exterior Pockets

Where we start to see a huge difference is in the number of pockets. The Authority brings the heat with a few front compartments for organization. The first pocket is a top pocket that can fit sunglasses or a cell phone. Below this pocket is a another pocket that includes a key keeper leash.

The Division only gives you one exterior utility pocket on the front. This pocket covers the entire front panel and is where you key keeper leash is located. Other than this front pocket, the Division does not include any other outside pockets.

It's safe to say that if you want a backpack with lots of pockets - go with the Authority Deluxe Backpack.

Water Bottle Pockets

Both backpacks include a single side water bottle holder. We found that the largest water bottle we can fit inside is a slim 24oz bottle. Unfortunately, these water bottle pockets are too small for larger bottles. So if you have larger 32oz or 40oz bottles, they will not fit.

Rear Laptop Compartment

The last compartment is the rear laptop compartment. The big difference here is that the Authority pack can fit a laptop up to 17-inches while the Division can only fit a 15-inch laptop. There is also a second padded sleeve that can be found inside the main compartments, but we will get to that later.

Timbuk2 Authority: Organizer Compartment

A huge difference between these two bags is the extra front compartment in the Authority pack that is missing on the Division. This compartment features an organizer panel for small items like pens and chargers.

The organizer compartment can open pretty wide thanks to two elastic gussets. It's also large enough to fit notebooks, a light jacket and other bigger items. One of the main ways to decided between these two backpacks is to ask if you need an organizer panel for quick access to small items. The Authority pack makes is super easy to organize and quickly grab stuff like pens, chargers and other small bits and bobs.

The Division pack doesn't give you these small pockets other than a large general utility pocket on the front with a key fob.

Authority vs Division: Main Compartment

Want to know the secret difference between the Timbuk2 Authority and Division? It's the main compartment sizes.

The main compartment in the Authority is longer and wider than the one in the Division. But! The main compartment in the Authority is slimmer than the one in the 18L Division.

This means that we could only fit a few binders and notebooks in the Authority before running out room. And if we wanted to fit a jacket, we had to divide our carry and place the jacket inside the organizer compartment. With the Division, we could fit our binders, notebooks AND jacket inside the main compartment just fine.

Instead of giving you one large 20 liter main compartment, the Authority instead splits its space between the organizer compartment and the main compartment. This means you'll have to divide your carry if you run out of space in the main compartment.

What does this mean for you? If you need to carry bulky items like a lunch box or camera cube, go with the Division. The main compartment in the Authority is just too slim for those kind of bulky items. For short trips, we found it much easier to pack the Division backpack because it gave us much more wide open room. The main compartment on the Division also gives you elastic gussets so that you can open it nice and wide for packing.

Second Padded Sleeve

Both backpacks also include a padded sleeve inside their main compartments. We found that we could easily fit a second laptop or tablet inside these sleeves, turning these Timbuk2 packs into dual laptop backpacks.

Compression Straps

The last major difference between the Timbuk2 Division and Authority packs are the location of the compression straps.

The Timbuk2 Authority has its compression straps on the bottom. These straps allow you to attach bulkier gear like a jacket or blanket.

The Timbuk2 Division has side compression straps. These straps aren't useful for attaching extra items but it allows the bottom of the bag to stay nice and flat. The one gripe we have is that you have to unbuckle these comression straps whenever you want to fully open the main compartment. This can get pretty annoying if you need quick access.

Choose the Timbuk2 Authority if... you need a work and travel backpack with great pockets for organization. Where the Timbuk2 Authority shines is in its organization. You also have the advantage of using the bottom compression straps to hold bulkier gear when needed.

Choose the Timbuk2 Division if... you want a smaller laptop bag with a minimalist style. The Timbuk2 Division doesn't clutter you with too many pockets and gives you a cleaner look as a result. The JetBlue personal item guidelines are clear: if a bag is any larger than the 17x13x8 bag size limit then it is considered a carry-on bag and must be placed in the overhead bin.

What to Look for in a Grocery Backpack

The elephant in the room is that there are very few “grocery backpacks” on the market. Maybe a brand has designed one but we couldn’t find many backpacks thats sole purpose is to haul groceries at the time of publishing. Instead what we focus on here are backpacks that can be repurposed for comfortable carry of groceries.

With that said we have narrowed down our options to backpacks that meet the following criteria:

1. A big open main compartment

2. Comfortable shoulder harness with chest and/or waist straps to help with load distribution.

3. Heavy duty construction that can take on some weight.

1) A Big Open Main Compartment

A large open compartment is a must for a grocery backpack so we focused on featuring backpacks that didn’t have too many extra pockets inside the main compartment.

We used half gallons cartons to test a lot of these bags. They are bulky, heavy and give a good reference point for size since most people are familiar with milk cartons.

Between 30 and 40 liters seems to be the sweet spot for a weekly grocery haul for one or two people with an expandable or roll top backpack that can add more room as you need it being the ideal.

Along with having a roomy main compartment you want it be easy to clean in case of accidental spills. This is where we are partial to Chrome and Ortlieb backpacks because their main compartments aren’t lined with fabric so they can be easily wiped down if needed.

2) Ergonomic and Comfortable Under Weight

We feature backpacks that have good ergonomic designs for their shoulder harness and back panels. Groceries can get heavy and thin shoulder straps just aren’t going to cut it. A semi-rigid back panel is a bonus to prevent awkward grocery items from poking you in the back.

Mission Workshop includes load lifters with their shoulder straps in their larger backpacks - these are small straps at the top of the back panel that helps stabilize heavy loads. It’s features like these add up to comfortable wear when hauling groceries.

Making sure you choose a backpack with a sternum strap and waist belt is important when picking out a grocery backpack. Our top picks are judged primarily by their construction quality because a grocery backpack needs to be heavy duty enough to take on heavy awkward loads like milk cartons and soup cans. We can’t afford a backpack that runs the risk of tearing under load because of cheap construction quality.

The interior is made up of one very roomy 22-liter main compartment that features a padded laptop and tablet sleeve that discreetly stays out of the way when not in use making it perfect for packing bulkier items like groceries. We could easily fit 3 half-gallon cartons of milk at the bottom of the backpack with room to spare on the floor.

Unfortunately, the Harber London TotePack does not include a chest strap or waist belt to help with weight redistribution. This is a major reason why we did not include it with our heavy duty backpacks above. But for lighter loads and quick grocery trips - the Harber London TotePack shines by offering a very roomy main compartment and a handsome design that will definitely gain some compliments when worn.

The Fjallraven Raven 28 is a 28 liter daypack that is slightly larger than the Tom Bihn Synapse 25 in capacity but generally all not that larger in overall size. In fact, it looks deceptively slim when worn. The materials used in the construction are G-1000 HeavyDuty Eco which is a combo of recycled polyester and organic cotton. The bag is weather proof and can get your through a rainy day.

As for organization, the Fjallraven Raven 28 has a generous main compartment coupled with it's own zippered laptop pocket (up to 15”). Other compartments include 2 side pockets, a zippered front pocket and two additional zippered pocket with compartments in each for extra organization.
