Best 18x14x8 Personal Item Bags (Spirit, Frontier, United Airlines)

We tested the best 18x14x8 personal item backpacks and explore which ones can be used for one-bag packing with Basic Economy tickets when carry-on luggage is not allowed.

Carry-on luggage fees! Checked bags at the gate! These are just some of the surprises you can run into when traveling. Trust us, we've been there and share your frustration.

With the rise in popularity of the basic economy fare, more and more people are deciding to ditch the carry-on bag and travel with just a personal item. Many major airlines are including a free personal item with a basic economy ticket but it needs to fit underneath your seat in order to be allowed.

The good news is that many domestic airlines in the United States, such as American, Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit Airlines, all share the same standard personal item size limit of 18 x 14 x 8 inches, which gives you the chance to have just one bag for multiple airlines.

In this buying guide we are going to focus on backpacks that not only fit the 18x14x8 bag requirement and have the best quality, organization and features. Those looking for smaller personal items bags should check out our buying guides for United Airlines (9x10x17) and JetBlue (17x13x8).

What You Need to Know About Personal Items

A personal item is any bag that can fit underneath the airplane seat in front of you. If a bag is too large to fit underneath the seat it will considered carry-on baggage and will have to placed in the overhead bin. Travelers with Basic Economy tickets, are often only allowed one personal item bag and will be charged an extra fee for any carry-on item they board with.

Below are the official links to airlines with an 18" x 14" x 8" personal item size limit to help you determine the most up to date carry-on and personal item size restrictions. It’s always a good idea to double check your airline before your next trip.

How We Tested Each Bag

Size Limit Check

We measured the bags we tested to confirm that they fit the personal item maximum dimensions of 14" x 18" x 8" or under. Sometimes the bag measurements on the brand website can be off and we wanted to make sure there were no surprises.

T-shirt packing test - two personal item backpacks filled with t-shirts

Shown above: Fjallraven Kanken 15” and Db Hugger 20L backpacks tested in our studio

Packing Test

Our packing test is simple - how many t-shirts can fit inside the main compartment? This will give you a standard way to visualize what can fit inside and will be very useful if you plan on ditching the carry-on bag for your next trip and just bringing a personal item to take advantage of cheap basic economy tickets. We used a men's size small t-shirt for our testing.

Tested! Backpacks 18 x 14 x 8 inches or Under

The Ridge Commuter 20L Backpack

If great organization of your travel essentials is what you need, then The Ridge Commuter Weatherproof backpack is the bag you'll want to get! This backpack has just over a dozen pockets for organizing all of your flight essentials. It even has a couple of secret compartments to hide stuff like a passport, wallet and Apple Airtag.

What makes this backpack special is its “dual access” zipper design that allows you to open the Commuter like both a regular backpack or a panel loader clamshell backpack for easy packing. The Ridge even includes a removable velcro divider to simplify packing of clothing and toiletries.

The size of The Ridge Commuter is perfect for major airlines and fits the size restrictions for a personal item on American Airlines, Spirit, Allegiant and Frontier Airlines. Plus, its weatherproof construction means you can use it as a daypack at your destination rain or shine.

Our testing: The Ridge Commuter backpack can fit 21 t-shirts inside the main compartment. This makes it a great option as a packing backpack for one-bag travel on short trips! We found that even when packed completely full, the Ridge Commuter does a great job at keeping its shape and staying under the 18x14x8 bag size limit.

Knack Pack Series 1 expandable 18x14x8 backpack

Knack Pack Expandable Backpack Series 1

Say goodbye to baggage fees! The Knack Pack Series 1 has to be one of our favorite travel backpacks for travel thanks to its expandable travel compartment and myriad of clever travel features.

It's the little things that make the Knack Pack it such a pleasure to use, such as lockable zippers, a trolley sleeve to attach the bag to a suitcase, and anti-microbial lining on the inside to prevent stinky smells.

Knack Packs come in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. For use as an under-seat bag, we recommend going with the size Small, which can fit underneath the most airline seats when fully expanded. You could also use the size Medium as an underseat bag when not expanded. For an in-depth comparison of all Knack Pack models, check out our Knack Pack Series 1 vs Series 2 comparison.

Our testing: We found that the Knack Pack Series 1 Small can fit eight t-shirts inside the main compartment and an additional 20 t-shirts inside the expandable packing compartment, giving you a total of 28 t-shirts!

Although the Knack Pack offers the most packing space out of any bag on this list, it measures slightly over the 18x14x8 personal item measurements with a 9” depth (the maximum is 8”) when fully expanded. Just be careful not to overpack this bag when expanded and you should have no issues fitting the Knack Pack underneath your airplane seat.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 12 x 5 inches (17 x 12 x 9 inches expanded)

  • Capacity: 15-27L

  • 13" laptop sleeve on the outside

  • Packing compartment opens like a suitcase

Db Hugger 20L travel backpack

Db Hugger Backpack 20L

There are so many great things to say about the Db Hugger backpack - where should we begin?

For starters, this backpack gives you 20 liters of packing space while still being small enough to stay within standard 14 x 18 x 8 bag requirements. It's a winner already! But unlike other 20 liter bags with bulky pockets, the Hugger gives you a lot of open space just for packing making it perfect to take as your free personal item on Basic Economy flight.

One of our favorite features of the Db Hugger backpack is its top pocket, which provides quick access to small items such as headphones, chewing gum, and other flying essentials without requiring you to remove the backpack from underneath the airline seat. The Db Hugger also includes a 13" laptop sleeve on the outside, making it easy to access your tech without having to fuss with your packing.

Our testing: The Db Hugger 20L can fit 19 t-shirts inside the main compartment and doesn't balloon out to accidentally add more inches like other laptop backpacks when packed full. The secret weapon is Db's Rib Cage Technology that gives the backpack its structured shape while keeping it lightweight.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17.72 x 10.8 x 7.7 inches

  • Capacity: 20L

  • 13” padded laptop sleeve on the outside

  • Large packing compartment that is lined with mesh pockets for organization

  • Available in many different colors

Chrome Ruckas 14L personal item backpack for airlines

Chrome Ruckas 14L Backpack

The Chrome Ruckas 14L is one of our top personal item backpack recommendations and it’s easy to see why once you explore all it has to offer. Its compact size makes it great for flying with budget airlines with strict size limits making personal item compliance one less thing to worry about on busy travel days. The price is also right - for under $100, you get the features of a more expensive backpack with compromising on quality.

Although this backpack only has a 14 liter carrying capacity, it actually a roomy 14 liters and more than enough room for travel essentials like a laptop, a light jacket and tech pouches. The external storage also allows you to avoid taking up precious cargo space on the inside. Along with an external rear laptop compartment, the side water bottle pocket and gusseted front pocket make it easy to grab items quickly when you are in a hurry. Add in a trolley sleeve and removable chest strap and you have the perfect travel companion.

Our testing: The Chrome Ruckas 14L Backpack can fit 16 t-shirts inside the main compartment. We appreciate how this backpack does a great job at holding it's shape and not bulging out too much when packed full. However, this backpack really shines as a small pack for in-flight entertainment and comfort staples like tech, sweaters and a neck pillow. If you are looking for the perfect one-bag travel bag to avoid airline fees, you might one to go with another option with more internal packing room.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 10.75 x 5 inches

  • Capacity: 14L

  • Rear 13" laptop compartment + internal 14” laptop sleeve (dual laptop backpack)

  • Internal organizer pockets for smaller items

  • Trolley sleeve for attaching to rolling luggage

tomtoc Voyage-T50 - 18x14x8 underseat travel bag

tomtoc Voyage-T50 Backpack

Unlike most other backpacks on the market, the tomtoc Votage-T50 Backpack was designed from the ground up to be used as a personal item backpack on flights. Its dimensions fall well under the coveted 14" x 18" x 8" size limit when fully packed. This backpack is also chock full of travel-specific features that many other backpacks overlook. Our favorite are the thick handles on each side of the bag to make it easy to grab the backpack from both underseat storage and overhead compartments. Add in a trolley sleeve for attaching the backpack to rolling luggage and you have the perfect companion for weekend getaways and business trips.

The main compartment on this backpack was made for easy packing. We could easily fit 2-3 days worth of clothing inside the main compartment. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on if you are light or heavy packer but it’s fair to say that the tomtoc Votage-T50 makes a great option for one-bag carry on quick trips.

Our testing: The tomtoc Voyage-T50 20L can fit 20 t-shirts inside the packing compartment. When you consider that you still have a separate tech compartment that can hold a laptop, tablet and accessories in the rear as well as exterior pockets for extra storage, you are looking at a lot of packing space for such a compact bag. We found that the front of the backpack will bulge outward when overpacked. However, even when the bag is stuffed to the brim it will still fall under the 8-inch depth requirement for airline travel.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 12 x 5 inches

  • Capacity: 20L

  • Roomy main compartment for packing

  • Rear tech compartment for 16” laptop and 12.9” iPad

  • Designed for airline carry - grab handles, trolley sleeve and easy access pockets

Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15" backpack

Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15"

The Fjallraven Kanken is a favorite amongst travelers and it's easy to why! The Kanken is made from a tough Vinylon-F material that keeps the bag's square shape so that you don't have to worry about going over the personal item maximum size when stuffing it full. This is the kind of peace of mind you'll be thankful for when bag on strict flights.

Don't be fooled by the Kanken's small size! Anyone traveling with a basic economy ticket on Frontier or Spirit Airlines will appreciate the wide open main compartment that can fit more than you think. This is thanks to the Kanken's simple construction. There aren't many pockets on the inside to take up much needed packing room.

Our testing: The Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15 can fit 22 t-shirts inside the main packing area while still giving you the outside laptop sleeve for your tech and a pocket up front for smaller items. No matter how you pack the Kanken, it will always stay under the airline size restrictions.

If you want more packing room, we recommend going with the larger Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 17 which measures a little larger at 16.53 x 11.81 x 7.08 inches

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 15.75 x 11.03 x 6.29 inches

  • Capacity: 18L

  • 15" padded laptop sleeve on the outside

  • Durable yet lightweight construction

Troubadour Bivy Bivy Tote Backpack for travel

Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack

The Troudadour Bivy is a convertible backpack and tote bag that allows you to carry it how you want, when you want. We like to turn it into a tote bag to hide the shoulder straps when using it as a personal item for neat storage under the airplane seat. Trust us, it makes life easier.

Troubadour is known for their great quality backpacks and you can be sure to expect lots of pockets for organization and a high end design that is sure to turn some heads at the airport. The Bivy Tote Backpack is no exception to this rule. It gives you lots of space on the inside to pack for a short trip and must-have pockets for water bottles, small travel items and a laptop.

The fact that you can turn it into a tote bag scores some big points if you plan on using it as a daybag at your destination. Need a nice bag for dinner? This is the bag you'll want to bring. Expecting rainy weather? No problem, the Bivy is made with water resistant materials and zippers (in fact, it's one of our favorite waterproof backpacks for women).

Our testing: The Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack can fit 24 t-shirts inside the main compartment making it a great option for one-bag trips. This bag does have a tendancy of ballooning when overpacking, making it wider than the stated 11-inch width but it does not go over the 18 x 14 x 8 maximum size in linear inches. In other words, even if you stuff it full, this bag can squeeze underneath the seat because it’s not structured. Was that too confusing? We hope not.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 11 x 7 inches

  • Capacity: 21L

  • Convertible from backpack to tote bag

  • Highly water resistant construction

Sherpani Soleil AT 18x14x8 backpack for travel

Sherpani Soleil Anti-Theft Travel Bag

The Sherpani Soleil is easily the most versatile bag on this list! This convertible backpack allows you to also wear it as a backpack, crossbody bag or tote bag. But the real win are the advanced anti-theft features that are built into each bag. Not only do you get lockable zippers, RFID-safe protection and anti-slash fabric but each Soleil includes Return.me lost and found technology that helps you track down you bag worldwide if it were to ever get lost. This service is free of charge with each Soleil purchase.

At a 14-liter capacity, the Sherpani Soleil will be on the smaller side. We found the overall size great for people with slim shoulders or shoulder torsos who usually find most backpacks too bulky. Inside we were able to fit our in-flight essentials like a laptop, water bottles and light jacket. So, if you are looking for a bag that can be used for multi-day travel packing, you might want to look at some of the other options on this list.

Our testing: The Sherpani Soleil backpack can fit only 14 t-shirts inside the main compartment. This backpack isn't ideal as a packing backpack for one-bag travel but we do recommend it as a personal item when paired with a larger carry-on bag or checked luggage. The built-in luggage sleeve makes it super easy to attach to luggage for easy airport carry.

Check out our Sherpani Soleil review for an in-depth look!

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 15 x 11 x 4.5 inches

  • Capacity: 14L

  • 15" padded laptop sleeve

  • Convertible: Backpack, crossbody or tote bag

  • Advanced anti-theft design makes it a great daybag in busy cities and tourist areas

Some of our favorite features include water bottle pockets both inside and outside of the bag, a separate padded laptop sleeve and plenty of exterior pockets for quick access to travel essentials.

Traveling with a checked bag? No problem. The Everlane Renew Transit even includes a pass-through strap so that you can attach it to rolling luggage for hands-free carry at airports and hotels.

Our testing: We found that the Everlane ReNew Transit can fit 24 t-shirts inside the main compartment, making it one of the roomiest backpacks we have tested while still keeping under the 14 x 9 x 18 size restrictions.

Timbuk2 Division laptop backpack for travel

Timbuk2 Division Laptop Backpack

Rugged, comfortable, and packed with great pockets, the Timbuk2 Division gives you everything you need to travel with confidence. The Division is our favorite laptop backpack for carrying tech on flights, thanks to its 15-inch laptop compartment and a second padded sleeve inside the main compartment that can hold a second device.

Not only does the Timbuk2 Division meet the personal item requirement of 18x14x8 for airlines like Spirit and Frontier Airlines, but it is also small enough to be used on other popular airlines, like United Airlines and JetBlue, that have stricter personal item size limits.

Our testing: Our packing test revealed that the Timbuk2 Division can fit 22 t-shirts inside the main compartment. At 22 liters, you could use the Timbuk2 Division for packing but we recommend it as a small backpack for travel essentials to compliment luggage stored in the overhead bin.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17.3 x 10.6 x 5.12 inches

  • Capacity: 22L

  • Weight: 2.2 lbs

  • 15" padded laptop compartment

Matein Travel Laptop backpack for underseat storage on airplane

Matein Travel Laptop Backpack

Matein makes an affordable laptop backpack for both travel and daily carry that we recommend to those on a tight budget. Now, there are two versions of this backpack: the 15.6 inch and 17 inch versions. For personal item travel, get the 15.6 inch version.

Some great features you can expect from the Matein Travel Laptop backpack are lots of pockets for organization, a hidden pocket for valuables and a passport and a USB port for charging. Matein doesn't say what the capacity of this backpack is but we guess it's around 20-25 liters.

Our testing: The main compartment of the Matein Travel Laptop backpack can fit 22 t-shirts making it a great Spirit or Frontier Airlines personal item bag for packing to avoid additional charges. When packed full the depth of the Matein backpack is closer to the 8" depth personal item limit but will still be compliant.

For an in-depth look at this bag, head over to our Matein Travel Laptop Backpack review.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 18 x 12 x 7.8

A Comfortable Fit

There are tons of cute work backpacks out there, but why do so many have thin backpack straps and terrible comfort features? Whether you need a backpack for your daily commute or business trips, having a comfortable backpack is important. This is why we paid attention to finding packs with padded adjustable straps, a comfortable back panel and a chest strap when needed.

Our main priority was finding women's work backpacks that are not only comfortable but a good fit. For many women, most backpacks are either too broad in the shoulder straps or too long on the back. This is why we focused on backpacks that are a better fit for people with narrower shoulders and a shorter torso length. Although "professional backpacks for women" can be worn by anyone, it's worth pointing out this distinction when we talk about fit. For larger work bags, check out our list of the best work backpacks for men as well as our business casual backpack buying guide.

Great Organization

A backpack for everyday use has to help you stay organized. We looked for bags that can be used by professional women with specific features like a dedicated laptop sleeves and exterior pockets for easy access to small items. Just as important is a roomy main compartment that has enough room for work items such as a lunch, water bottle and light jacket or sweater.

Business travelers may need a daily bag that can double as their travel bag. While others would like ample space for workout clothes and other after-work activities. For safe daily commutes, we included our favorite women's backpacks with hidden pockets. Whatever your carry goals, we made sure to include backpacks of all sizes so that you can find the perfect one.

Inside the Troubadour Ember business backpack for women

The Troubadour Ember is our top pick for those looking for a professional backpack for women that doesn't skimp on the important details. What sets the Ember apart from other work backpacks is that it includes a dedicated laptop compartment with sleeves for both a laptop and tablet plus an extra padded sleeve inside the main compartment, making it the best laptop backpack we have tested for women who carry multiple devices to work. If that weren't enough you also get generous interior pockets for work essentials and a water-resistant design that's made to protect important items on rainy commutes.

We really do recommend it if you don't like the look of a bulky backpack and we found it perfect for storing business essentials such as tech, notebooks and small items. Our Testing Process

The Backpackies team tested dozens of women's work backpacks and only highlighted the very best. Our main priorities when testing were comfort, organization and style. We also kept in mind that a "work backpack for women" is a broad category. This is why we focused on selections that are versatile enough for both daily commuting and business travel.

Our testing items included a water bottle, laptop, tablet, tech chargers, a light jacket, business binders, notebooks, shoes, clothing, and personal essentials like cosmetics. Each backpack was evaluated by their easy access to items as well as their organization of these items. Many of these backpacks we have personally used in the real world for our own commutes and weekend getaways, while others underwent testing in our studio. The top picks chosen in this buying guide were the ones that performed the best.

Finally, comfort and fit were just as important as style. If the backpack wasn't comfortable to wear, then we just did not include it.

Work Backpacks for Women - Common FAQs

  • The short answer is yes, a backpack can be considered professional. The secret lies in choosing the right design.

For professional settings, choose a backpack with a mature and sophisticated design. This means avoiding loud colors and sporty designs that look like they belong on a hiking trail instead of a client meeting. Dangling straps, like those from hip belts or shoulder straps, should also be avoided for a cleaner look. In this buying guide we really tried to avoid women's backpacks with elements like mesh water bottle pockets, bungee chords and compression strap so to ensure that the bag is as sleek looking as possible while still being functional.

When it comes to materials, classic choices like high-weave nylon and genuine or faux leather are recommended for women's professional work backpacks. Sticking to neautral colors such as black, navy, gray and beige will also elevate the bag to a more professional look. These rules aren't set in stone, and what you ultimatly wear depends on how casual your work setting is, but sticking with tried and true materials and colors will add up to a more professional look.

  • For most women, a backpack that measures 17-inches or under in height will provide the best fit. This will accommodate for a shorter torso and provide a more proportional look when worn on the back. Given the need for a more compact fit, we found that many women's backpack for work can range from 13 to 25 liters in capacity. Although 13 liters is on the smaller side, it gives you just enough room to organize smaller work essentials such as a laptop, pens, a wallet, water bottle and cosmetics kit. A 25 liter pack is better suited for bulkier items like multiple binders and folders, a jacket or lunch box.

To get a better idea of what size backpack you really need, make sure to check out our Backpack Size Guide. This helpful guide illustrates what fits in different size packs.

  • With commuter backpacks our emphasis is always on comfort. If you plan on wearing your work backpack for long periods of time during daily commutes then having comfortable padded adjustable straps and a breathable back panel is a must. Other features like exterior pockets for quick access to items like a metro card or umbrella are also helpful.

  • Absolutely! A good professional backpack is versatile enough to use for both daily carry and travel. If you need a bag that does both make sure to choose a backpack with travel-specific features such as a trolley sleeve, water bottle pockets and easy-access pockets for travel essentials. Many backpacks also include safety features such as secret anti-theft pockets for items like passports, wallets and other valuables. These are all must-have features for traveling and the good news is that many modern women's work backpacks do include them!

10 Best Backpacks with Trolley Sleeve (Luggage Sleeve)

A trolley sleeve, also known as a luggage sleeve or luggage strap, is a feature found on many travel backpacks, allowing you to attach the backpack to your rolling luggage for easy transportation. In this buying guide, we test and review the best backpacks with trolley sleeves for hassle-free trip.

I was all set for my weekend getaway, my carry-on suitcase packed to the brim and my personal item backpack filled with travel essentials to keep close by during the flight. However, upon arriving at the airport, I realized I had overlooked something crucial: my backpack didn't have a trolley sleeve.

Instead of conveniently attaching my backpack to my suitcase while I waited at the airline terminal, I found myself forced to set it down on the floor. Standing in a crowded boarding line with a bulky backpack on my back, while wheeling my carry-on in front, was far from ideal.

It may seem like a silly oversight, but having a backpack with a trolley sleeve would have spared me these small inconveniences, starting my trip off on a better note.

This recent experience served as the inspiration for this buying guide. We have compiled a list of the best backpacks with a trolley sleeve to guarantee that your next trip is hassle-free and comfortable.

Two backpacks with trolley sleeves attached to luggage handles and three travel backpacks on the ground.

What is a Trolley Sleeve?

A trolley sleeve, also known as luggage sleeve or luggage strap, is a feature that can be found on the back panel of many travel backpacks. It allows you to attach the backpack to the handle of your rolling luggage, making it easier to carry everything at once. Imagine swiftly navigating through a busy airport, your backpack securely attached to your suitcase, leaving your hands free to hold a coffee or show your boarding pass. Trust us, this little feature is a lifesaver on travel days!

Note: Most backpack brands will use the terms trolley sleeve, luggage sleeve and luggage strap interchangeably. They all are describing the same feature!

Backpacks with Trolley Sleeves - FAQs

Can a backpack with a trolley sleeve be used for daily carry, or just for travel?

The short answer is that a backpack with a trolley sleeve can absolutly be used for daily carry! Backpacks with trolley sleeves are usually designed to be very versatile. Not only is a trolley sleeve a common feature in travel backpack, but they can also be found in daily laptop backpacks, smaller daybags or gym backpacks. For daily use, the trolley sleeve or luggage strap can remain unused. But when it comes to travel, the trolley sleeve becomes a vital feature, allowing for easy attachment to rolling luggage for hassle-free transportation through airports and train stations.

Think of a trolley sleeve as an extra feature on your backpack that is there when you need it but stays out of the way when you don't!

Can a backpack with a trolley sleeve fit all types of luggage handles?

Backpacks with a trolley sleeve are designed to have as much as a universal fit as possible. There might be some variations in fit depending on the specific designs of both the backpack and the luggage. The bags on this list have been tested by our team and are guaranteed to fit carry-on or check-in luggage with handles that measure 6 3/4" in width and under. Most wheeled luggage will have a trolley handle that is around that width but it's best to measure your own existing luggage trolley handle to double check compatibility.

What should I look for in a backpack with a trolley sleeve?

When looking for a backpack with a trolley sleeve, consider factors such as the size, material, and additional features that suit your needs. It's best to consider a backpack for its primary and secondary functions. Need a daily laptop backpack that you can occasionally use for travel? Features like comfortable shoulder straps, a padded laptop sleeve and organization for daily essentials will be the most important features. If you need a travel backpack then features like anti-theft zippers, large main compartments for packing and quick-access pockets to stuff like a passport will be your best bet.

Are there backpacks with removable trolley sleeves?

Most backpacks have a trolley strap or luggage sleeve built-into the back panel that is not removable. The good news is that a luggage sleeve should always be a stealth feature. This means that you shouldn't even notice that the trolley sleeve is there when you are not using it. With this in mind, having a backpack with a removable trolley sleeve has few benefits and as a result isn't a common addition to most backpack designs.

How does the trolley sleeve secure the backpack to the luggage? Is it safe?

A trolley sleeve is designed to securely slide over the handle of your rolling luggage, to attach the backpack to the suitcase so that you can carry both at once. This design allows for a stable and secure connection, reducing the risk of the backpack falling off while you are on the move. Is a backpack attached to luggage more secure than a backpack on the ground? Absolutely! Since the backpack must be slide over the luggage handle, it makes grab-and-go theft of the backpack a lot more difficult for the thief. We also find it much easier to keep an eye on all of our travel items when a backpack is attached to luggage than when both items are separated.

What is a flap backpack?

A backpack with a flap is traditionally called a rucksack. Rucksacks were originally used in the military and for outdoor recreation as a way to haul large amounts of gear while still keeping your hands free for important tasks. These bags are usually made out of canvas and feature a large main compartment with few pockets.

The top “flap” on a backpack is also known as a lid. A lid provides an efficient way to close the main compartment while protecting the gear inside the bag from the elements.

Today you can find a “flap backpack” design in a variety of styles including backpacks made specifically for laptop carry, photography, travel and school. We’ve come a long way from the days of big old canvas rucksacks and most brands now use new fabric technology and construction methods to add modern day features such as extra pockets, laptop sleeves and tech compartments.

What’S underneath the flap?

Backpacks with lids usually have 2 different types on enclosures underneath them: drawstrings or zippers.

Flap backpack with drawstring

The most common type of flap backpack is one with a drawstring closure underneath the lid. These backpacks give you double protection as the drawstring cinches the main compartment shut and prevents your items from spilling out while the buckled lid adds another layer of protection and water resistance.

Most backpacks with a flap closure have a variety of this lid and drawstring combination.

Flap backpack with zipper

Some modern backpacks with lids use zippers instead of a drawstring closure. In this case the lid protects the zippers from getting wet which increases the water resistance of the backpack significantly. It’s also common to see pockets on the lid for extra storage.

Let’s talk about buckles

Not all flap backpacks are created equal. When picking out a new backpack you should pay attention to how the lid is secured to the backpack’s body as this determines how easy it is to get inside the main compartment.

Flap backpacks - belt buckles vs metal buckles

Belt buckles - Some brands use traditional belt buckles to secure down the lid. Although these buckles look awesome, they can get very cumbersome to undo every-time you want to access the inside of your backpack.

Metal buckles - Brands like Fjallraven like to use metal hook buckles to secure their lids down to the bag. We like these because they are easy to use and incredibly durable.

Flap backpacks - plastic buckles vs magents

Plastic buckles - Although it has become very common to use plastic buckles in flap backpack designs they do have their pros and cons. One hand they are very easy to use and allow quick access to your stuff. On the other hand they aren’t as durable or nice looking as a metal buckle.

Magnets - Lastly, we have flap backpacks that look like they have complicated belt buckles but use magnets instead to secure the lid in place. The best example of this is the Herschel Little America backpack. This design allows you to get a cool vintage buckle look without the hassle.

The good news? Magnets are the easiest to use as you can open your bag in seconds with just a pull. The bad news? Magnets don’t secure the lid as well as a mechanical buckle and are very easy to pull apart.

Can You Use a Flap Backpack for School?

Yes! Many flap backpacks are perfect for school thanks to their large open main compartments and rugged construction. Here are some features that are worth looking out for if you are looking for a school backpack.

Large main compartment

Rucksacks have the advantage of having large main compartments that are great for storing large school books, binders, clothing and a lunch. You can take advantage of a flap backpack for school with a large open main compartment if find yourself lugging around lots of stuff and could use the room.

If you are not sure if a backpack is going to be too big or too small for your needs check out our backpack size guide for a better look at what can fit inside 20L, 25L and 30L size backpacks.

Laptop and Tech Compartment

Today’s modern student needs a modern backpack that can protect their laptop, tablet and tech accessories. Most flap backpacks today have special laptop compartments or padded sleeves for your laptop and tablet. When choosing a vintage style flap backpack, make sure that the pockets are updated to carry your tech with confidence.

Water resistant

One major advantage of a flap backpack over a regular zippered backpack is that the lid offers additional protection from the elements since it covers the main compartment opening. If you want additional water resistance you can go with a canvas flap backpack since canvas is naturally water resistant. Other great materials are leather, nylon and fabrics that have a special coating on them to actively repel water.

We have an entire list of the best waterproof backpacks for college that you can take a look at if owning a highly water resistance school backpack is a priority.

Video Review

Materials and Construction

Everlane made a special effort to offer a backpack made out of environmentally conscious materials. The ReNew Transit is made out of 100% recycled polyester with recycled polyester lining. The outside material is also coated with a CO water resistant finish to protect the backpack from rain and moisture.

Everlane ReNew Transit backpack recycled polyester fabric and metal zipper pulls

Everlane doesn’t state what weight polyester they use - but if we had to guess we would say it’s around 500 denier. The fabric feels lightweight yet tough enough to handle daily abuse.

Both the zipper pulls and shoulder strap buckles are made out of metal, although Everlane doesn’t disclose what kind of metal it is. It feels like a lightweight aluminum.

Metal shoulder strap buckles on the Everlane Renew Transit backpack

Everlane did a great job with the shoulder strap buckles. They feel like great quality and will hold up better than the usual plastic buckles that are used in most backpacks. The branding on the metal is also a nice touch.

When it comes to water resistance, the ReNew Transit backpack does a great job of repelling water away from the zippers and internal compartments. This is thanks to it’s CO water repellent finish that allows water to form beads and roll off the fabric.

Everlane ReNew Transit backpack water repellent fabric

The overall design of the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack also helps with water repellency as the top lid covers the main compartment entry and each front pocket is designed with a lip over the zippers. It’s small details like these that go a long way for protecting your stuff from getting soaked during a rainfall.

Pockets and Compartments

Let’s start with the pockets and compartments on the outside of the ReNew Transit.

On the front of the backpack you will find two zip pockets. The first is on the bottom front of the backpack and the second is located on the lid. Both pockets are about the same size and can fit bulkier items such as a large pair of headphones and a laptop power brick charger.

The pockets themselves are large open pockets with no further organizers or smaller pockets for things like pens, a phone or passport. This could be a deal-breaker for those of you who need smaller pockets to keep organized.

Everlane ReNew Transit travel backpack pockets

On the one side of the backpack you will find a water bottle pocket.

Our one gripe with the side water bottle pocket is that it has no give. This means when the main compartment is full, this water bottle pocket becomes tight and you are going to have a hard time inserting a water bottle inside the pocket. It also means that larger water bottles simply won’t fit.

In the future Everlane should consider adding some elastic banding to help the water bottle pocket stretch as needed.

Everlane backpack water bottle pocket

On the opposite side of the bag is where you will find the vertical laptop compartment zipper. The laptop pocket is said to hold a laptop up to 15-inches. Our 13” Macbook fit just fine with plenty of room to spare.

The laptop pocket entry measures 15-inches and the pocket depth is 12-inches. Slim 15” laptops will have no problem fitting into this laptop compartment but we are weary about bulkier 15” laptops or laptops over 15-inches.

Laptop sleeve dimensions

Laptop sleeve dimensions

Now let’s talk about laptop protection.

The laptop compartment on the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack is padded on all sides but it’s lacking a false bottom. This means that the laptop pocket reaches all the way down to the bottom of the bag.

This could be a problem if you drop the bottom of the backpack on a hard surface as the laptop compartment itself has limited padding to protect from that kind of impact.

A false bottom is a small design feature that many backpack companies ignore but it’s still nice feature to have for the extra protection of your expensive tech.

Everlane ReNew Transit backpack - laptop compartment fit

To gain access to the main compartment you will have to open up the lid which is secured with a magnet. This is a nice feature since you don’t have to fiddle with buckles or straps before you can get into the main compartment.

The inside of the backpack features an incredibly roomy 27-liter main compartment. Inside you will find two slip pockets that are made of the same material as the lining. These slip pockets are pretty thin… but they were designed to hold document papers and magazines and they work well for their intended purpose. Unless we stored documents specifically, we did not find ourselves using these slip pockets all that much.

Document sleeves inside the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack

At the bottom of the main compartment is where you will find a second water bottle pocket. This internal pocket is good for storing a water bottle or umbrella and gives you the option of carrying your water bottle on the inside or outside of the backpack.

Water bottle pocket inside the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack

Overall, the pocket placement is great and access to every compartment is easy. Our main complaint is the lack of smaller pockets or organizers for little things like a phone, passport or pens. What ends up happening is that all of your smaller items (charging cables, pens, cosmetics, etc) will just float around in one of the two outside zip pockets.

The Everlane ReNew Transit lacks small pockets and organizers.

The Everlane ReNew Transit lacks small pockets and organizers.

Another common carry feature that Everlane left out is a key clip. Again, you are going to have to rely on the front pockets to store your keys.  This is something else you should keep in mind if you are used to having that kind of organization in your current bag.

Capacity and Design

The Everlane ReNew Transit’s carrying capacity is 27 liters which makes it a versatile backpack that can be used for school, work, travel or the gym.

For college students or professionals, the main compartment is large enough to fit multiple binders and large textbooks with room to spare on top.

The Everlane ReNew Transit also makes a great work to gym backpack as you can comfortably fit a pair of shoes and change of clothes along with some daily essentials inside the main compartment.

What fits inside the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack: Work and gym items

What fits inside the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack: Work and gym items

As a travel backpack we found that the main compartment can fit both a large and small packing cube just fine. This equates to a few days worth of clothing.

What fits inside the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack: 1 large + 1 small packing cube

What fits inside the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack: 1 large + 1 small packing cube

The back of the backpack features a black polyester strip that functions as a trolley sleeve for attaching to rolling luggage. This is a must-have feature for a travel backpack and we are glad Everlane included it.

Everlane travel backpack with trolley sleeve

For frequent flyers, it’s also worth noting that the measurements of the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack fit right under many airline personal item bag size requirements, making it a great backpack to take with you on flights in addition to your carry-on.

Fit and Comfort

When it comes to fit and comfort, the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack is a nice in-between size for most people. It was designed as a unisex backpack and that is reflected in its size. It won’t be too large for most women, but it’s not so tiny that it will look ridiculous on larger people.

Everlane reNew Travel backpack review - fit and comfort

The width between the shoulder straps come to 2-3/4 inches which is consistent with most women’s backpacks. This is important to note because if you have very broad shoulders we are not sure how comfortable these shoulder straps are going to be for you since most men’s backpacks have a gap of 3+ inches between the shoulder straps to accommodate a broader frame.

The shoulder straps do have this nice ergonomic curve to them which does add positively to the overall comfort when you wear the backpack. Adjusting the shoulder straps is incredibly easy using the metal buckles.

Everlane renew transit backpack shoulder straps comfort

The shoulder straps themselves are pretty simple and don’t have too much padding, which can spell trouble for anyone looking to use the Everlane ReNew Transit for long hauls where they will be wearing the backpack fully loaded for hours at a time. In those situations, these shoulder straps are not made for that kind of wear and you might be better suited going with a travel backpack specifically designed for long hauls.

As a backpack for casual wear I would say that the Everlane ReNew Transit is a comfortable wear especially when used for commutes or for light traveling.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day we really do enjoy the Everlane ReNew Transit backpack. The design is versatile enough to be used as a commuter, gym or travel backpack. The 27 liter capacity is the perfect size for a small travel backpack and there is plenty of room for shoes, multiple days worth of clothes and even large books and binders.

It’s modern design gives it a sophisticated touch that really sets Everlane apart from other backpack brands. Everlane really nails this minimalist backpack style and we are excited to see what else they will offer in the future.

11 Best Personal Item Backpacks For Delta, United, American Airlines and more

Let us help you find the best personal item backpack for your next flight with these 11 awesome picks. The backpacks comply with the personal item bag dimensions for Delta, United, Spirit, American Airlines and more.

When it comes to comfort and versatility nothing beats a well-designed backpack. So it should come as no surprise that a backpack is our airline personal item bag of choice.

If you are looking to use a backpack as a personal item on your next trip then you may be disappointed to discover that most backpacks may be too large or just lacking the features needed to used as an on-flight travel bag.

This is why we decided to do the research and list the best backpacks that can be used as personal items on flights. Our top picks fit a number of important personal item requirements such as size, pocket placement and travel-friendly design features.

Difference Between a Personal Item and a Carry-On

Let’s start with explaining the difference between a personal item and carry-on bag.

The difference is simple: a carry-on bag must fit in the overhead compartment while a personal item must fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Airline carry on vs personal item difference

If a bag is too large to fit in underseat storage then it will be treated as a carry-on bag. If a carry-on bag is too large to fit in overhead storage then it will be treated as a check-in bag and you will not able to bring it on the airplane cabin with you.

Examples of carry-on bags include carry-on luggage, weekender backpacks and large travel bags and duffels. Personal item bags include a purse, briefcase or small backpack.

Each airline has their own specific measurements for what can be considered a carry-on and a personal item so it’s important that you check with your airline to make sure your bags fit the measurement requirements.

When it comes to personal items it’s also important to understand that underseat dimensions can vary by airplane, boarding class and seat location. For example, there is no underseat stowage in the front rows behind the bulkhead and smaller planes tend to have smaller underseat storage dimensions.

Shown above: Knack Pack Series 1 expandable backpack

Is a backpack a personal item?

Can a backpack be a personal item? The simple answer is yes, a backpack can be a personal item.

The important thing to note about airline personal items is that just about any bag can be used as long as it fits under the airline’s personal item dimensions. This includes backpacks, diaper bags, purses and briefcases.

The key to making a backpack count as a personal item is to make sure it’s small enough to meet the size requirements. Many backpacks may be too bulky to fit underneath an airline seat or can be considered too large by the airline.

Below is a chart of the most popular airlines in the United States with their stated personal item bag size. This chart was last updated on 09/24/2019. Make sure to check your airline’s official website for the latest carry-on and personal item size requirements.

Airline Personal Item Size
American Airlines 18" x 14" x 8"
Alaska Airlines No specific size
Air Canada 17" x 13" x 6"
Delta No specific size (see our Delta size guide)
Frontier 18" x 14" x 8"
JetBlue 17" x 13" x 8"
Southwest 18.5" x 13.5" x 8.5"
Spirit 18" x 14" x 8"

How to Choose the Best Personal Item Backpack

If you have read this far and didn’t love our any of the backpack choices then that’s ok

Each backpack on this list was chosen because it fit our own personal item bag requirements and you can use these same guidelines to find the right personal item backpack for you.

These requirements include:

  1. Backpack size

  2. Pocket accessibility

  3. Travel features

  4. Backpack quality

Choosing a personal item bag: travel essentials

1. Backpack Size

It’s no secret that airlines will crack down on the size of your personal items and carry-ons, this is especially true on smaller planes and crowded flights. We made sure that each backpack on our list fits the maximum personal item bag size for most airlines.

Southwest Airlines has one of the largest personal item size limits at 18.5”x 13.5” x 8.5” while United Airlines has one of the smallest personal item bag limits at 17” x 10” x 9”. Since each airline bag requirement is different we can’t guarantee that every backpack on this list will be the right size for you next trip, but we have found that 18-inches is the average maximum height for most airline personal item bags.

When it comes to carrying capacity, backpacks under 20 liters are usually small enough to be considered a personal item with the most common size being around 18 liters. While you can’t expect to pack for an entire 2-week vacation at this capacity, it’s the perfect size to carry the essentials you will need for a comfortable flight. Travel pillows, water bottles, books and a laptop can all comfortably fit inside an 18-20 liter backpack.

Man walking in airport with personal item backpack

2. Pocket Accessibility

Another must-have in a personal item backpack is good pocket placement that can be easily accessed while you are seated on the flight. A personal item is meant to be stored underneath the seat in front of you and the most important items in your bag should be easily accessible.

Ideal pocket placement will be on the top and front of the bag. This allows you to grab small essentials like headphones, charging cables and snacks without having to remove the entire backpack from underneath the seat.

Laptop accessibility is also important as you will want to be able to quickly grab or store your laptop without having to rummage through the backpack’s main compartment. Backpacks with side or top laptop access are the best options when choosing a personal item bag. It also makes going through security checks at the airport much smoother as you’ll have quicker access to your tech.

How to choose the best personal item bag for airlines

3. Travel-friendly Features

Travel-friendly features include things like trolley sleeves so that you can attach the backpack to rolling luggage, passport or ticket stash pockets and lockable zippers. Find out which travel features you can’t live without and go with a backpack that includes as much of them as possible. This may sound like a no-brainer but it’s still worth mentioning. Getting to the airport and not having a quick pocket to stash your airline tickets is a sorry fate.

4. Backpack Quality

The final requirement we have for choosing the best personal item backpack is quality. When choosing any travel bag you want to make sure the quality is good enough to withstand the rough handling usually encountered on busy trips.

Brands with a reputation of good quality like Patagonia, eBags and Fjallraven were sure to make our list. But we also made sure to not mention backpacks that were too cheap. We’re talking about those $20 backpacks that may get the job done but fall apart with repeated use.

You want to make sure the bag you purchase can be your go-to travel bag for years to come. This means spending a little more on brands that offer quality materials, good construction, and smart designs.

If you are looking for a versatile backpack that can also be used as a daypack once at your destination make sure to look out for high quality materials that are water resistant. If protecting expensive tech on your travels is important, then going with bags with extra padding in the laptop sleeve and separate fleece-lined pockets for small electronics will be your best bet.

Delta Personal Item Size Guide for Backpacks, Bags and More

Is a backpack a personal item on Delta? What is the Delta personal item size limit? We answer these questions and more in our Delta personal item travel guide.

Are you flying Delta and need to don’t know what is considered a personal item? We’ve been there.

Delta is very explicit with what counts as a carry on on their official carry on page but they keep it vague when it comes to personal items.

They describe a personal item as “1 purse, briefcase, camera bag or diaper bag, laptop computer or item of similar size” but they don’t give you much in terms of size limit or dimensions.

That’s why we have decided to write up this helpful guide for those who want to bring their favorite bag or backpack on their next Delta flight. Let’s explore what counts and doesn’t count as a Delta personal item.

Delta Personal Item Size

While Delta carry on bags have a strict dimensional cutoff of 22" x 14" x 9" (or 56 x 35 x  23 cm) their personal item size limit is not so clear.

The key difference between a Delta personal item and a carry on is that a personal item has to be able to safely fit underneath the seat in front of you. Just about any item, including backpacks, will be considered a personal item if they can fit in underseat storage.

Most Delta underseat dimensions are 20” L x 15” W x 11” H

We say most because the underseat dimensions can vary by airplane, boarding class and seat location. For example, there is no underseat stowage in the front rows behind the bulkhead and smaller planes tend to have smaller underseat storage dimensions.

The above underseat dimensions are a good starting point to where you need to be in terms of personal item size since any bag larger than 20” x 15” x 11” will automatically be considered a carry on.

Bags Delta will consider as personal items include: a small backpack, purse, briefcase, camera bag, small musical instrument case. As long as it can fit underneath the seat then you are good to bring it on.

Is a backpack considered a personal item on Delta?

Yes, a backpack can be considered a personal item on Delta airlines. But it’s good to know the difference between a Delta carry on backpack and a smaller backpack that will be treated as a personal item.

Sticking with a backpack that is 18” x 13” x 9” or smaller will ensure that your personal item safely fits underneath your seat. It’s important to pay attention to the backpack size as larger backpacks will have to be stowed overhead and may be counted as carry ons.

Below are some examples of backpacks that are sure to fit Delta’s personal item requirements.

Important tips: Choosing your Delta personal item

Important Tips: Choosing Your Personal Item

Before you decide on which bag to carry please make sure to follow some simple guidelines to make sure you are prepared for any variations in underseat storage that you may encounter on your next Delta flight:

It’s better to go smaller than larger

Keep in mind that each flight can be different and that underseat storage sizes aren’t guaranteed. It’s better to go with a smaller bag or backpack than one you may risk having to stow in overhead storage. We recommend keeping your personal item 18” x 13” x 9” or smaller.

Keep your personal item backpack or bag flexible.

It’s always a good idea that your personal item has some give to it. This means avoiding overstuffed backpacks or hardcases that don’t have any give to them. This will come in handy on unexpectedly cramped underseat areas such as those found in smaller Delta planes.

Don’t compromise legroom if you don’t have to

Keeping your personal item on the smaller side will give you extra room to stretch your feet during the flight. A bag that is too big may be uncomfortable, especially during long flights.

Conclusion

So now that we have gone over what exactly Delta considers a personal item with examples, let’s wrap it all up:

  • Delta allows 1 carry on item and 1 personal item passenger (unless you are traveling Basic Economy where different rules apply)

  • Delta personal items must fit in underneath the seat in front of you. Most Delta underseat dimensions are 20” x 15” x 11”

  • Stick with a bag or backpack that is 17” x 13” x 9” or smaller to ensure that it will fit in underseat storage.

  • Any bag or backpack larger than the underseat dimensions may be considered a carry on and will have to be stowed in the overhead compartment.
