Size and Fit: Day Owl Backpack vs Day Owl Slim

Exterior Dimensions:

  • Day Owl Backpack: 17" x 12" x 5” (up to 6.5” fully packed)

  • Day Owl Slim:  15.5" x 11" x 3.5” (up to 5” fully packed)

We should start out by pointing out that the regular Day Owl Backpack is not a bulky backpack to begin with. Its slim profile is a hallmark its minimalist look. With that being said, the regular Day Owl should fit most people just fine.

As the name implies, the Day Owl Slim is, you guessed it, slimmer! We found that the regular Day Owl gives you almost 6.5-inches in depth while the Slim comes in at 5-inches. Note: these measurements were taken when both backpacks were fully packed out with a laptop, full main compartment and a notebook in the front pocket. You’re actual depth measurements depends on what you pack inside!

Size difference: Day Owl Backpack vs Day Owl Slim side by side

Day Owl Backpack vs Day Owl Slim side by side

In addition to being slimmer, the Day Owl Slim will give you an overall smaller height and is slightly narrower in width. Overall, the Day Owl Slim will better suit people who usually find most backpacks too bulky on the back or those with shorter torsos who worry about the Day Owl Backpack being too long.

The shoulder straps on the Day Owl Slim are also going to be slightly narrower and overall smaller. So those with wider shoulders or a bulkier frame may find the Day Owl more accommodating overall.

Materials and Construction

Both the Day Owl Backpack and the Slim offer a near-identical construction. The bags are crafted with the same First Mile recycled wax canvas material, complemented by metal zippers and hardware.

We've had the opportunity to use these backpacks for two years leading up to this comparison, which should give the you some added insight into how the waxed canvas ages.

The full-sized Day Owl Backpack is in the Pale Olive color while the Day Owl Slim is Dawn Grey. The way that waxed canvas ages is unlike other fabrics; the more the bag is used, the more of a unique patina develops.

You can see how the Pale Olive color has visible patina marks while the light Dawn Grey color does a better job at hiding any marks that have developed on the wax canvas.

Day Owl vs Slim: Exterior Pockets

The first thing you should know is that although the Day Owl Backpack and Slim share most of the same pockets, the pockets on the Slim are much smaller.

The same front, side and top exterior pockets on the Day Owl Backpack and Day Owl Slim.

Day Owl Backpack vs Day Owl Slim: Both have most of the same exterior pockets.

The size difference can be best seen in the spill-resistant water bottle pockets. While both models can fit a wine bottle, the Day Owl Slim is restricted to slimmer water bottles, such as the 24oz Hydroflask bottle show in the photos. The full-size Day Owl Backpack however, can fit larger 32oz or 40oz bottles inside the water bottle pocket just fine.

Both the Day Owl and the Slim feature a flat front pocket and a top pocket but the Slim is missing the hidden side pocket.

Day Owl Backpack vs Day Owl Slim: The Slim is missing the hidden side pocket

Day Owl Backpack vs Day Owl Slim: The Slim is missing the hidden side pocket

A huge difference worth noting is that the Day Owl Backpack has two different spots for storing phone: the top pocket and the hidden side pocket. Unfortunately, the Day Owl Slim is missing the side pocket and the top pocket is too small to fit a phone. This is where the smaller pockets on the Day Owl Slim starts to feel like a downgrade. Aside from the front pocket, items like a phone, passport or portable power bank don’t really have a home on the outside of the bag and as a result you have less quick-access to these items when compared to the original Day Owl Backpack.

Laptop Compartments

For many, the real deciding factor will be the size of the laptop compartment in each backpack. The original Day Owl Backpack can fit a laptop up to a 16-inch Macbook while the Day Owl Slim is limited to a laptop up to 14-inches.

The Day Owl can fit up to a 16-inch laptop while the Slim can fit up to a 14-inch laptop.

In our testing we found that although the Day Owl Slim can fit a 14-inch PC, it’s a tight fit with the corners of the laptop coming uncomfortably close to the top of the pocket. For extra peace of mind, we do recommend just upgrading to the full-sized Day Owl Backpack if you have a 14-inch PC for that extra protection. The Day Owl Slim is really ideal for 13-inch laptops and tablets (in fact, it’s one of our favorite tablet backpacks), since these smaller devices comfortably fit inside.

It’s worth noting that both laptop compartments are well-padded. Although neither provide a raised false-bottom, there is a thick piece of foam at the bottom of each laptop pocket to protect your device from bumps and drops. In our two years of using these backpacks for travel and daily carry, the laptop protection has always been reliable.

What Fits Inside Each Backpack?

Day Owl Capacity:

  • Day Owl Backpack: 21L

  • Day Owl Slim: 13L

The Day Owl Backpack offers a capacity of 21L, significantly more than the 13L of the Day Owl Slim. What we have always loved about both backpacks is that the main compartment has a clamshell design for easy packing and unpacking.

Both backpacks can fit a change of clothes but the Day Owl Backpack can hold an extra pair of sneakers.

The most important fact to know here is that both the water bottle and top pocket take up room on the inside of the main compartments when they are packed. This isn’t a big deal with the larger Day Owl Backpack but with the Slim it starts to really effect the already limited packing space.

Both backpacks can fit items like folder, binders and notebooks but the Day Owl Slim won’t fit these items if you have a water bottle inside the pocket.

The Day Owl Backpack and Day Owl Slim backpack both packed with folders and notebooks for school

Notebooks and folders fit inside the Day Owl Slim as long as you don’t use the side water bottle pocket.

This difference impacts what you can carry. The Day Owl Backpack can handle bulkier items like lunch boxes, large notebooks, or even a camera cube, while the Slim is more suited for smaller items small notebooks, pouches and tech accessories.

Which Day Owl Size Should You Buy?

Day Owl Backpack in Pale Olive Color

Day Owl Backpack

Day Owl Slim Backpack in Dawn Grey color

Day Owl Slim

Choose the Day Owl Backpack if… you need more space for larger items such as a lunch box, camera cube or large binders and notebooks. We prefer the Day Owl Backpack as a school and overnight travel bag for its roomy interior and exterior pockets. You should go with the Day Owl if you have a laptop larger than 14-inches or if you carry larger water bottles.

Choose the Day Owl Slim if… you only need a small daypack for essentials. The compact size makes it great for people with shorter torsos who find many other backpacks too bulky. We also love the Day Owl Slim as a travel backpack! It’s great for carrying in-flight essentials and has been small enough to be used as an underseat personal item on on every flight we have taken it on.

From daily commutes to business meetings, discover the best work backpacks for women. We test and review each backpack for both style and function.

It wasn't long ago when a women's professional backpack was almost unheard of. Our work bag choices were typically limited to purses or tote bags. However, the times are changing and backpack brands are now introducing many women's work backpack options in sleek silhouettes. With the increasing items we carry daily—laptops, tech accessories, water bottles, and even a change of clothes—a spacious work backpack has become a more practical choice. But can a backpack be professional? We think so!

A Comfortable Fit

There are tons of cute work backpacks out there, but why do so many have thin backpack straps and terrible comfort features? Whether you need a backpack for your daily commute or business trips, having a comfortable backpack is important. This is why we paid attention to finding packs with padded adjustable straps, a comfortable back panel and a chest strap when needed.

Our main priority was finding women's work backpacks that are not only comfortable but a good fit. For many women, most backpacks are either too broad in the shoulder straps or too long on the back. This is why we focused on backpacks that are a better fit for people with narrower shoulders and a shorter torso length. Although "professional backpacks for women" can be worn by anyone, it's worth pointing out this distinction when we talk about fit. For larger work bags, check out our list of the best work backpacks for men as well as our business casual backpack buying guide.

Great Organization

A backpack for everyday use has to help you stay organized. We looked for bags that can be used by professional women with specific features like a dedicated laptop sleeves and exterior pockets for easy access to small items. Just as important is a roomy main compartment that has enough room for work items such as a lunch, water bottle and light jacket or sweater.

Business travelers may need a daily bag that can double as their travel bag. While others would like ample space for workout clothes and other after-work activities. For safe daily commutes, we included our favorite women's backpacks with hidden pockets. Whatever your carry goals, we made sure to include backpacks of all sizes so that you can find the perfect one.

Our Testing Process

The Backpackies team tested dozens of women's work backpacks and only highlighted the very best. Our main priorities when testing were comfort, organization and style. We also kept in mind that a "work backpack for women" is a broad category. This is why we focused on selections that are versatile enough for both daily commuting and business travel.

Our testing items included a water bottle, laptop, tablet, tech chargers, a light jacket, business binders, notebooks, shoes, clothing, and personal essentials like cosmetics. Each backpack was evaluated by their easy access to items as well as their organization of these items. Many of these backpacks we have personally used in the real world for our own commutes and weekend getaways, while others underwent testing in our studio. The top picks chosen in this buying guide were the ones that performed the best.

Finally, comfort and fit were just as important as style. If the backpack wasn't comfortable to wear, then we just did not include it.

Work Backpacks for Women - Common FAQs

  • The short answer is yes, a backpack can be considered professional. The secret lies in choosing the right design.

For professional settings, choose a backpack with a mature and sophisticated design. This means avoiding loud colors and sporty designs that look like they belong on a hiking trail instead of a client meeting. Dangling straps, like those from hip belts or shoulder straps, should also be avoided for a cleaner look. In this buying guide we really tried to avoid women's backpacks with elements like mesh water bottle pockets, bungee chords and compression strap so to ensure that the bag is as sleek looking as possible while still being functional.

When it comes to materials, classic choices like high-weave nylon and genuine or faux leather are recommended for women's professional work backpacks. Sticking to neautral colors such as black, navy, gray and beige will also elevate the bag to a more professional look. These rules aren't set in stone, and what you ultimatly wear depends on how casual your work setting is, but sticking with tried and true materials and colors will add up to a more professional look.

  • For most women, a backpack that measures 17-inches or under in height will provide the best fit. This will accommodate for a shorter torso and provide a more proportional look when worn on the back. Given the need for a more compact fit, we found that many women's backpack for work can range from 13 to 25 liters in capacity. Although 13 liters is on the smaller side, it gives you just enough room to organize smaller work essentials such as a laptop, pens, a wallet, water bottle and cosmetics kit. A 25 liter pack is better suited for bulkier items like multiple binders and folders, a jacket or lunch box.

To get a better idea of what size backpack you really need, make sure to check out our Backpack Size Guide. This helpful guide illustrates what fits in different size packs.

  • With commuter backpacks our emphasis is always on comfort. If you plan on wearing your work backpack for long periods of time during daily commutes then having comfortable padded adjustable straps and a breathable back panel is a must. Other features like exterior pockets for quick access to items like a metro card or umbrella are also helpful.

  • Absolutely! A good professional backpack is versatile enough to use for both daily carry and travel. If you need a bag that does both make sure to choose a backpack with travel-specific features such as a trolley sleeve, water bottle pockets and easy-access pockets for travel essentials. Many backpacks also include safety features such as secret anti-theft pockets for items like passports, wallets and other valuables. These are all must-have features for traveling and the good news is that many modern women's work backpacks do include them!

14 Best Small Backpacks for Men - Under 20 Liters

We list our top picks for the best small backpacks for men.

Let's face it, not every guy needs a big bulky backpack. While large backpacks are great for carry-on travel or carrying gym shoes, sometimes a small pack is all you need.

In this guide, we looked at dozens of backpacks to find the best small backpacks for men that are 20 liters or smaller. These backpacks are just right for everyday use while hitting that sweet spot of stylish design, durable fabrics and easy access to essentials.

We also thought about how well they fit. Even though there are lots of mini backpacks on the market, not all of them have shoulder straps that are a good fit for men with wide shoulders. The truth is that a lot of brands use "mini backpack" as a code-word for a women’s fit. So, if you're searching for a small men's backpack with the perfect fit, then you're in the right place!

How We Chose These Backpacks

  • In curating our list of the best small men's backpacks, we took special care to feature bags made from durable fabrics and components from reputable brands that we trust. Whether you're navigating crowded streets, traveling to different locations, or simply carrying your daily necessities, a small men's backpack with high-quality materials is a top choice for those seeking both style and functionality in a compact package. Just because it's a smaller lightweight backpack, doesn't mean it has to compromise on durability. We focused on durable canvas and nylon over flimsy polyester and YKK zippers over cheap imitations. These are all details that should be considered when considering a new backpack.

We also focused on bags with great water-resistant construction. With smaller bags, extra components like a rain cover will take up precious packing room. Instead we looked for bags with water-resistant coatings on the fabric, zipper guards to protect interior compartments or water-resistant zippers that can protect against rain and snow.

  • Just because a backpack is small doesn't mean it can't have great organization. We understand the importance of having designated spaces for both everyday essentials and travel items. This is why we focus on great small laptop backpacks and daily carry packs. Features we look out for are laptop sleeves, side pockets for water bottles and interior and exterior pockets for quick access to smaller items.

Whether you're searching for a new backpack for work or leisure, our selection emphasizes excellent organization. These features provide peace of mind, knowing that your essentials are readily accessible and stored in a well-thought-out manner. These small men's backpacks are not only designed to complement your daily routines but also cater to your travel needs, making them a practical choice for those who value both style and functionality.

  • The most important criteria for choosing a backpack is making sure that it's comfortable! We looked for backpacks with foam padded back panels and adjustable shoulder straps and gave special consideration to models who put in a little extra effort in the comfort department.

You may notice that although some small bags may include a sternum strap, hip belts are usually missing. Hip belts are reserved for larger backpacks to help support heavy loads. In short, you don't need a hip belt for a bag this small (unless you plan on packing a 14L pack up with bricks).

The same can be said for compression straps and other common exterior features. Most smaller bags are compact enough to not need compression straps for managing the bag size.

FAQs

  • A small backpack is generally defined by its capacity and footprint. Any backpack with a volume under 20 liters is considered small. These backpacks are designed to be compact and lightweight, and forego a large main compartment in order to make them more compact. They're great for shorter trips, daily commutes, or situations where you want to travel light. Moreover, small backpacks often come in two distinct styles: mini backpacks and slim backpacks.

Mini backpacks have a small footprint not only in terms of their capacity but also how they sit on your back. They typically smaller all-around and are designed to take up less space on the back when worn. These backpacks are excellent alternatives to sling packs and tote bags. On the other hand, slim backpacks maintain the footprint of a regular-sized backpack but offer a thinner profile. This style is perfect for guys who want to retain the classic backpack design but prefer a sleeker appearance. The slim design can be advantageous when navigating crowded spaces or for those who prefer a more streamlined aesthetic.

  • Absolutely, men can absolutely wear mini backpacks! The idea that backpack styles are gender-specific is changing, and fashion today is all about personal expression. Mini backpacks are versatile accessories that work well for anyone, regardless of gender. They come in various designs, colors, and materials, making it easy for men to find a style that suits their preferences.

Mini backpacks are practical and convenient for carrying daily essentials, such as keys, wallets, phones, and even small notebooks or tablets. In this buying guide we focused mostly on style and fit. Some mini backpacks can have narrow shoulder straps that might not be comfortable for some guys. So we focused on packs that will give enough support.

Everyday Organization

Keys, wallet, phone and tech. The perfect backpack for urban carry has enough pockets to keep you organized day in and day out. We focused on backpacks with small pockets for essentials, a water bottle holder and easy access to your most important stuff.

High Quality

Our focus in this buying guide is on high quality backpacks that are rugged enough for daily use. With that said, we tried to avoid cheap bags.

Listen, there is nothing wrong with a cheapo bag from Amazon (some of them aren't bad). But we would rather concentrate on great quality backpacks made from tough materials that won't fall apart in a few months. Ballistic nylon, cotton canvas and waterproof fabrics are more our style.

Water Resistance

Living in the city means dealing with unpredictable weather, which is why having a water-resistant backpack is important. Whether you are looking for a waterproof backpack for college or a bag to keep you dry during commuters - a water-resistant backpack will give you the peace of mind you need. We tried to focus on the best city backpacks made with waterproof fabrics and rainproof zippers.

Comfortable Commuting

Having a comfortable backpack is essential for those commuting to work, school, or running errands in the city. We looked for well-padded backpack straps and breathable back panels for comfort during daily commutes. Larger backpacks should also have a sternum strap to help with weight distribution of heavy loads.

Chrome Barrage Cargo waterproof roll top urban commuter backpack

Chrome Barrage Cargo

The Chrome Barrage Cargo is one of the toughest commuter backpacks on the market. It's waterproof, so your stuff stays dry even in the worst weather. Our favorite feature is the cargo net on the outside. It gives you extra storage for stuff like bike helmet, shoes, or bags from unexpected shopping trips. The roll top also allows you to use the Barrage Cargo as an expandable backpack to add more room inside by unrolling the top.

We have to be honest and say that this isn't an urban laptop backpack. In fact, there isn't even a padded laptop sleeve. Instead this is a backpack for those who need a tough-as-nails waterproof bag over a backpack with a million pockets. It's a commuter bag for those who value simplicity over marketing gimmicks.

For a closer look, check out our Chrome Barrage Cargo review.

  • Specs:

    • Capacity: 18L

    • Materials: 1050D Nylon and waterproof TPE tarp

    • Weight: 3lbs

    • Padded laptop sleeve: None

Features that make the Barrage Cargo a great urban backpack

    • Welded waterproof tarp liner makes the main compartment completely waterproof

    • Cargo net allows for extra storage of bulky items

    • Rolltop main compartment expands from 18-22 liters as needed

    • Chrome seatbelt chest strap (it's fun to use!)

    Built for the Daily Grind

Although we made sure to feature the best urban laptop backpacks, we had to make the exception with the Chrome Barrage Cargo. The Chrome Barrage Cargo does not have a padded laptop sleeve, instead it's just one big waterproof bucket for your stuff. No laptop compartment. No million pockets for school supplies. Just a good reliable roll top backpack.

But we had to include the Barrage Cargo for its construction. It's tough and reliable.

The outer shell of the Barrage Cargo is made of rugged 1050D nylon, and the inside of the main compartment is lined with a heavy-weight waterproof tarp. The shoulder straps can be adjusted with metal buckles, not plastic. Add in Chrome's signature seat-belt sternum strap buckle and better control over weight distribution with heavy loads. If this backpack ever does fall apart (doubt), Chrome has you covered with a lifetime guarantee.

Troubadour Pioneer urban laptop backpack with bottom shoe compartment

Troubadour Pioneer Backpack

Troubadour does two thing very well: water resistance and comfort. They also have amazing pockets. Ok, so it does three things very well.

The Troubadour Pioneer can be best described as a jack of all trades. It's a sleek backpack for business days. A gym bag when you need it thanks to its bottom shoe compartment. And most of all, the highly water resistant urban backpack you've been looking for.

We can't express how nice Troubadour bags feel in person. There is something about the vegan leather trim and soft lining in the pockets that give it a certain je ne sais quoi. We wrote a Troubadour Pioneer review if you want a closer look at the details.

  • Specs:

    • Capacity: 23.5L

    • Materials: Recycled polyester, vegan leather trim

    • Weight: 2.4lbs

    • Padded laptop sleeve: Up to 16" laptop

Features that make the Pioneer a great urban daypack

    • 16” laptop sleeve

    • Very water resistant construction

    • Lots of small pockets inside for organization

    • Side pockets for water bottles and other essentials

    • Bottom compartment for shoes or extra clothing

    Sleek & Stylish

It would be impossible to list all of the different features the Troubadour Pioneer offers in a short blurb. So you will have to take our word for it that this backpack can do it all.

First of all, this backpack compact at only 23.5 liters that doesn't give you the bulky profile of bigger backpacks. This is a huge plus if you find yourself navigating crowded areas in the city. But what it lacks in size it makes up in organization. If you need a backpack with a spot for everything, then this is the backpack for you. There are plenty internal pockets for every thing from a phone to tech chargers. The outside of the bag also gives you two water bottle holders and extra pockets for small items like a phone or wallet. Pair these features with waterproof zippers and you have the perfect urban daypack.

Db The Ramverk 21L urban backpack in Black Out color

DB THE RAMVERK Backpack

The Db Ramverk is a clamshell backpack designed for urban creatives. What sets the Ramverk apart is its special lay-flat main compartment, which makes it easy to pack large items clothes or a camera cube. Inside, there are also mesh pockets to help you stay organized with small items.

As a commuter bag, the Db Ramverk is incredibly stylish. It has soft adjustable shoulder straps for all-day comfort. Additionally, the bag is made of PU leather with metal hardware, which gives it a handsome appearance that matches well with life in the city.

Features that make the Ramverk a great urban daypack

    • Clamshell backpack easy packing and unpacking

    • PU leather exterior, metal buckles and slim profile gives this backpack an upscale look

    • Lightweight thanks to Db’s rib cage construction

    • Compression straps on the front for storing extra items like a jacket

    • Laptop sleeve in separate compartment for easy access

    A Lightweight Urban Laptop Daypack

The Db Ramverk features a unique design that can be best described as part lux designer bag and part tactical city backpack. On one hand, you have a PU leather exterior and aluminum metal hardware which gives it high end feel. But then there are sports elements like exterior straps and hooks for Db modular hook-up system.

As an urban laptop backpack, Db includes a separate padded laptop compartment that was designed to fit a up to a 15” Macbook Pro. Chargers, cables and tech accessories can all be stored inside the numerous mesh pockets that line the main compartment.

One feature that Db doesn’t get enough credit for is their innovative rib cage construction that allows for a lightweight and slim backpack without compromising on internal packing room. Instead of traditional foam padding, Db uses ABS “ribs” that are not only much lighter than traditional panels but also provides great protection to the inside of the bag.

Looking for the best backpack for grad school? In this buying guide we explore our favorite backpacks for graduate students that are mature and campus ready.

When you go from being an undergrad college student to a graduate student, things change a lot. You'll have fewer classes each semester, and you'll spend more time doing research, going to seminars, and attending meetings. Grad students have busy schedules, whether they're spending long hours in a lab or working as a teaching assistant. And because of that, they need backpacks that can keep up with their needs.

In this guide, we've made a list of the best backpacks for grad school. We considered what graduate students need and did some research and testing to find backpacks that are both stylish and practical. These backpacks can be useful even after you complete your graduate program, as you move on to the next stage of your career.

Room for Graduate School Supplies

Whether you are just starting your graduate program or getting ready to wrap-up a master's degree, some school supplies stay consistent throughout your education. Most graduate students carry items like binders, books, and notebooks for reading and note-taking. We looked for backpacks that have big main compartments to fit all those things. These backpacks also should have easy access pockets for pens, planners, and other small items that you need.

Graduate school days can be long, so you will want to bring some personal stuff too, like a water bottle, lunch, or jacket. Many of the backpacks we feature have space for those things too.

We recommend the Ramverk to grad students who want something different from the usual North Face or Jansport backpacks. Db might not be a common brand on a college campus, but it's great for those pursuing a graduate degree who need something more mature.

You can also choose from different colors, making the Db Ramverk backpack a mix of style and function that will elevate your daily look.

Timbuk2 Authority laptop backpack

Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack

The Timbuk2 Authority was made for daily work carry but we love it as a graduate program backpack for students who spend less time in the classroom. You can fit folders and notebooks just fine but this bag is really about great organization. Our favorite feature has to be the bottom compression straps that allow you to attach a jacket on those annoying cold in the morning but warm in the evening days.

If you are considering a Timbuk2 backpack we highly recommend you take a look at our Timbuk2 Authority vs Division backpack comparison.

Samsonite Xenon 3.0 Backpack

Samsonite Xenon 3.0 Backpack

The Xenon 3.0 backpack from Samsonite's Business Collection is designed for people who want a professional look. It's a great choice for grad students because it has some really useful features like a separate laptop compartment and large compartments. The main compartment is roomy enough for bulky books. And there's a special compartment to help you keep your smaller things organized, like pens, chargers, and a tablet.

Troubadour Apex Backpack

Troubadour Apex Backpack

If you want a high quality backpack that you can take into the office after graduation, then the Troubadour Apex is the backpack to get. It's actually one of our top picks for the best men's work backpacks. But we think the Apex would be an excellent choice for graduate students because of how well it does organization.

This backpack might look small, but it can hold more than you think. The main compartment can fit a few binders and notebooks, and it has lots of pockets inside to help you stay organized. The best part? The Troubadour Apex is highly water resistant. It's made with water resistant materials and zippers to protect everything inside.

If you want the biggest laptop backpack we wouldn't go with this one. But if you want the nicest...

How to Choose a Backpack for Graduate School

  • When students start graduate school, they have to carry different things in their backpacks than when they were undergrads. One big difference is that they don't need as many textbooks. In grad school, they focus more on specialized research and studying one subject in depth. So, instead of lots of textbooks, they might have more specific reference materials and articles that they can store on their computers or tablets.

Graduate students usually carry a set number of items. They need a laptop and tablet, as well as chargers and cables to keep them powered. Organizational tools like binders, folders, and notebooks help them keep their stuff organized. They also need books for reference and research. Writing tools like pens and highlighters help them take notes and analyze information. A planner helps them keep track of important dates and schedules, and sticky notes can be used as reminders. It's also important for grad students to have a water bottle and a lunch box to stay hydrated and have something to eat during their busy days of learning and research.

  • The carrying capacity of a backpack tells you how much it can hold. It's usually measured in Liters (L) and determines how big the main compartment is. If you only need to carry a laptop and a few notebooks, a smaller backpack in the 20-25 liter range might be better. But if you're a grad student with lots of binders and books, you'll need a bigger backpack in the 25+ liter range to fit everything.

We made a visual backpack size guide that shows different backpack sizes and what can fit in them. It can help you choose the right backpack for grad school. If you want clear examples, it's worth checking out!

Tips for Finding a "Grown Up" Backpack

  • The materials used to make a backpack are really important when you want a more mature and grown-up look for grad school. You can't go wrong with natural materials like waxed canvas or leather. But synthetic high quality fabrics are great as well. Cordura nylon, XPAC, ballistic nylon are all rugged materials that take less abuse. The less abuse your bag takes, the more put together it will look!

  • The structure of a backpack is an important thing to think about when choosing a mature grad school bag. It refers to how the backpack keeps its shape when it's empty.

Some backpacks made of unstructured canvas, like the classic Jansport backpacks, can collapse inward when you wear them. While these backpacks might have been okay for high school and college, it's a good idea to get a more professional-looking bag for graduate school.

The best business backpacks usually have some kind of structure to them. We kept that in mind when recommending our favorite grad school backpacks on this list.

  • When picking out a new backpack for grad school, it's best to avoid bright colors and patterned fabric. Those kinds of backpacks are often used by high school and undergrad students, and their designs show that.

To make any backpack look more mature, just stick with basic and simple colors. Black, gray, navy, and maroon are all good colors to choose for a grad school backpack.

Best 17x13x8 Bags in 2023 - JetBlue Personal Item Backpacks

Find the best personal item for JetBlue underneath the 17” x 13” x 8” size limit, including great travel bags for BasicBlue passengers who need one personal item bag for packing!

If you have booked your next flight with JetBlue Airways, then it is possible that you are starting to sound the alarm about not finding a bag small enough to be considered a personal item in time for your next trip.

The golden rule is that your personal item must fit underneath the airplane seat in front of you. Easy, right?

Well, JetBlue is very clear about the size of their personal item bags, with strict maximum dimensions of 17" L (43.2 cm) x 13" W (33 cm) x 8" H (20.32 cm) and the space under an airplane seat can vary from jet to jet - and sometimes even from seat to seat on some planes. So sticking with the JetBlue required dimensions will be your best bet.

In this buying guide, we hope to make picking out your next personal item bag as easy as possible. We focus mostly on the best 17x13x8 backpacks, but we have also found a few great convertible tote bags and under-seat travel duffels that get the job done just as well.

17x13x8 backpacks from left to right: Timbuk2 Division, King Kong EDGE23, Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack

Jetblue personal item examples from left to right: Timbuk2 Division, King Kong EDGE23, Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack

Our Top Pick JetBlue Personal Item Bags

  1. Timbuk2 Division - Best JetBlue laptop backpack for underseat

  2. King Kong EDGE23 - Best for one-bag packing (for Blue Basic fare with no carry-on)

  3. Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack - Most stylish. Converts from backpack to tote bag.

JetBlue Personal Item: What You Need to Know

The JetBlue personal item guidelines are clear: if a bag is any larger than the 17x13x8 bag size limit then it is considered a carry-on bag and must be placed in the overhead bin.

The stakes are even higher for Blue Basic passengers who are only allowed have one personal item included in their fare. This means the Blue Basic ticket-holders run the risk of additional charges or a checked bag at the gate if their bag goes over the JetBlue personal item size limit.

JetBlue Personal Item bag size of 17x13x8 inches - example shown Patagonia Atom Tote Pack

Pictured above: Patagonia Atom Tote Pack 20L

What Counts as a Personal Item on JetBlue?

You can bring any bag as long as it fits JetBlue underseat bag size of 17” x 13” x 8” (or 43.2cm x 33cm x 20.32cm). This includes backpacks, tote bags, duffel bags and purses.

How Much Can You Fit In A JetBlue Personal Item?

You can expect a 17x13x8 backpack to be between 15 liters and 25 liters in capacity. For JetBlue Blue Basic ticket holders who want to pack with just a personal item, you can expect to fit 2-4 days worth of clothing depending on how you pack.

If you want to see what different sized backpacks can hold, we recommend you check out our Ultimate Backpack Size Guide with real examples.

Luggage with Wheels

Will small under-seat luggage fit underneath the seat in front of you? Maybe. But we found that 99% of carry-on bags with wheels will go over the JetBlue personal item size limit.

The problem with wheeled underseat luggage is that the spinner wheels and handles are counted toward the overall baggage dimensions, which wastes significant packing space. We also found that they are often too wide to be considered a JetBlue personal item and may not always fit under the airplane seat.

Best Backpacks 17 x 13 x 8 inches or Under

tomtoc Voyage-T50 Laptop Backpack

The tomtoc Voyage-T50 and airline travel are a match made in heaven! This bag's dimensions fit comfortably underneath the airplane seat, allowing you to keep your belongings close at hand throughout the flight. And with travel features like a trolley sleeve for attaching to luggage and easy-access pockets, the Voyage-T50 makes the perfect travel companion.

We really love the wide-open main compartment that gives you enough room for 1-2 days packing. In fact, light packers might be able to squeeze in another day or two. The square design maximizes packing space while keeping the dimensions intact, allowing you to use the Voyage-T50 for one-bag travel on short trips. In addition to the roomy main compartment, a rear tech compartment provides a spot to quickly access a laptop, tablet, and chargers during flights.

While many other backpacks include thinner shoulder straps, the tomtoc Voyage-T50 is equipped with wider shoulder straps that are usually found on larger backpacks. This makes the Voyage-T50 a great choice for those with wider shoulders who often find the fit of compact backpacks to be too small.

This also allows for a neater experience when stowing the bag under the airline seat, which is a huge plus.

Inside, you'll find a 17" laptop sleeve and plenty of pockets for smaller items, while the outside of the bag provides you with a hidden pocket for a passport or wallet, a large front pocket, and discreet water bottle pockets that blend in with the bag when not in use for a cleaner look.

With that being said, the Got Bag Daypack is on the small side, and we definitely recommend it for travelers who only need a personal item to complement their checked luggage or carry-on item in the overhead bin. Those with a JetBlue Blue Basic ticket who need room for packing might want to skip this one.

Got Bag is a relatively new brand with a mission to clean up our environment from plastic waste. Their bags are made of Ocean Impact Plastic, which comes from plastic waste that would otherwise have ended up in the ocean. It’s a great ethos that we can stand behind.

One of our favorite features of the Topo Designs Rover Pack is its large and stretchy side pockets that can fit larger 32oz water bottles, making it one of our favorite backpacks with water bottle pockets for this reason. Sure, this may seem like a strange reason to love a bag, but the side pockets really are a pleasure to use.

Materials and Construction

Our first impression of the Day Owl backpack was “Wow, this is a well made bag!

The materials feel robust and solid. Nothing feels cheap. And we can tell that the waxed canvas and leather will wear very well over time. Waxed canvas is a very hardwearing fabric and one of the few materials that actually looks better over time as it develops a rugged patina.

When it comes to materials Day Owl prides itself in sourcing only ethically conscious materials that serve a greater purpose. The brand is very transparent with how they source the materials to make each Day Owl backpack. Below is a brief overview.

First Mile Waxed Canvas - First Mile supports micro-economies in underdeveloped communities by offering materials from ethically sourced supply chains. It’s a people-first approach to traditional sourcing.

Day Owl backpack with First Mile Waxed Canvas

100% Recycled Polyester - The lining, zipper tape and thread are all made out of recycled plastic bottles. This eliminates environmental waste in a huge way.

LWG Certified Leather - All of the leather accents are made out of LWG certified leather. LWG is a group that focuses on compliance for eco-friendly and ethical sourcing of leather materials.

Day Owl backpack with LWG Certified Leather

Along with the above materials, Day Owl also ditches cheap plastic hardware for metal ones. Everything from the zipper pulls, snaps on the top handle and shoulder strap buckles are made out of metal. Metal is more robust and long-lasting than plastic pieces and this significantly adds to the durability of the bag over time.

Free Repairs For Life

An underrated feature of the Day Owl backpack is that the brand offers free repairs for life! The bag is constructed to be repaired and not thrown away. This really shows when you look closely at the shoulder strap and body construction.

So few brands offer a warranty like this and we think it’s pretty special.

Pockets and Compartments

Outside Pockets

One of the reasons we call the Day Owl a “backpack for adults” is because of its minimalist design that hides many of the pockets and compartments from view. This gives you a clean profile on the outside of the bag without skimping on organization.

Day Owl Backpack - front stash pocket

On the front you will find a zippered stash pocket that covers most of the front panel. This is just one big open pocket that is great for bulkier items like large headphones, glasses cases and tech accessories.

Day Owl backpack - glasses pocket

On the top of the backpack you will find a small pocket that is perfect for sunglasses or a phone.

Day Owl Backpack Review - hidden side pocket

On the one side of the bag there is another small pocket that can fit a pair of sunglasses, a phone or a wallet.

Day Owl backpack hidden chimney pocket

But the best pocket is the hidden chimney pocket that can fit long items like a water bottle or small umbrella. This chimney pocket is lined with neoprene - a water resistant fabric that prevents leaks from soaking into the bag.

Day Owl claims that an entire bottle of wine can fit into the chimney pocket so we decided to test it ourselves…

Day Owl backpack wine bottle pocket

Along with a wine bottle, the chimney pocket can fit most slim water bottles but we found that large diameter bottles (i.e. a Nalgene 32 oz.) will be too wide to fit into this pocket.

Day Owl backpack laptop compartment

The last exterior pocket on the Day Owl backpack is the laptop compartment that is located against the back panel. This laptop compartment is padded on all sides and can fit either a 14” laptop (Smaller version) or up to a 15” laptop (Larger version).

One minor complaint is that the laptop compartment does not have a false bottom. This means that the laptop compartment reaches all the way down to the bottom of the bag with little padding between your laptop and the ground. With a false bottom, there is room between the your laptop and the bottom of your bag for extra protection against drops.

Main Compartment

The Day Owl offers a mostly clamshell zipper design that allows for open access to the items inside. Clamshell backpacks are some of our favorites as they offer full access to the entirety of the main compartment. They make packing and retrieving items a lot easier since you can lay the bag almost flat for easy access.

Day Owl backpack with clamshell main compartment

When it comes to internal organization Day Owl has kept it simple by offering just two slip pockets in the back. These pockets are pretty slim and don’t offer much room for carrying bulkier items. For example, a slim external hard drive may fit in the larger pocket but anything bulkier may not fit.

Day Owl backpack inside pockets

These pockets are one of the rare cons of the Day Owl backpack since they are simply too narrow and too deep to be very useful. Very small items (chapstick, makeup, Airpods) will sink to the bottom of the pocket and it isn’t fun trying to cram your hand in that narrow pocket to reach for it.

Day Owl backpack hook webbing for keys

Another small feature is the webbing on the one side of the main compartment. This allows for attaching of keys and other accessories.

What Fits Inside the Day Owl?

The Day Owl comes in two size options: Smaller (16 liters) and Larger (21 liters). Both versions are compact enough to use as everyday carry but may be too small to use as a serious travel bag (longer than an overnight stay).

If packing for a gym workout the main compartment on the regular Day Owl can fit:

  • A water bottle

  • Change of clothes

  • Toiletries Bag

What fits inside Day Owl backpack smaller

While the main compartment in the Larger Day Owl can fit the same plus a pair of running shoes.

What fits inside Day Owl backpack larger

As a backpack for work or college we found that both the Smaller and Larger versions can comfortably fit large binders, textbooks and notebooks. You also have the separate compartment for your laptop carry.

There is also still room for things small such as glasses, tech accessories and personal items on the outside pockets while the main compartment is full.

Comfort and Fit Features

Day Owl has decided to keep thing simple when it comes to comfort features. The back panel shares its padding with the laptop compartment and the shoulder straps are also padded for added comfort.

Day Owl backpack review - back panel padding

When fully loaded the Day Owl comfortable and we found no pinching or digging with the shoulder strap design. A lot of that has to do with the small form factor of the Day Owl that just doesn’t warrant the level of padding you would find in a larger backpack.

Day Owl backpack shoulder straps up close

One of the best design features on the Day Owl is their “no slack straps” which eliminates dangling straps by using a closed loop design. This is one of those small design details that makes the Day Owl look a little bit more grown up and sophisticated than your average backpack and it’s one of our favorite features.

The only other backpack we have reviewed with similar shoulder straps is the Black Ember Citadel R2 and we wish more backpack brands would incorporate this kind of shoulder strap design.

Day Owl backpack no slack straps

How comfortable you find the Day Owl relies on picking out the proper size. The difference between the Smaller and Larger version is in the width and height of the bag and the shoulder strap positioning.

The shoulder straps on the Smaller version are a little under 2-inches apart at the very top. Where as the Larger version’s shoulder straps are about 2 1/4 inches apart.

The best size for you really depends on your body type. You should choose the Smaller version if you have smaller shoulders and a shorter torso. Taller people or those with broader shoulders will find the Larger size to be a better fit.

You can tell Day Owl wanted to keep this backpack as simple possible. Not only does a simple construction allow for a light weight backpack but it also makes it easier to repair in the future.

Final Thoughts

Day Owl backpack

Overall our Day Owl experience has been an overwhelmingly positive one.

The clean minimalist design and the awesome features like the chimney pocket and no slack straps really make the Day Owl a true “grown up backpack” that can be worn just about anywhere.

And let’s not forget about the top notch materials and construction. In addition to looking good, the Day Owl feels like a nice backpack. The wax canvas and leather accents are expected to wear very well over time and the metal hardware is a nice touch. The fact that Day Owl offers free repairs for the life of the bag also brings in some serious peace of mind.

Backpack Capacity Explained

Backpack capacity is usually measured in either cubic inches (in³) or liters (L).

Although many backpack manufacturers measure their volume in cubic inches we are going to focus on liters because it is more common.

backpack size guide - what size backpack do I need?

For the sake of simplicity we like to divide backpacks into simpler size categories of Small, Medium and Large. Note that these categories are just how we categorize backpacks here on Backpackies and are no way a universal way of determining backpack size.

  • Small Backpacks (Under 19L)

  • Medium Backpacks (20-29L)

  • Large Backpacks (30-39L)

Backpacks over 40L

In this guide we will only cover backpacks up to 39 liters. This is because backpacks over 40 liters are usually too large to comfortably use as a daily backpack for school, work or commuting.

backpacks over 40 liters

Backpacks over 40 liters are best reserved for travel, hiking or backpacking where loading multiple days worth of gear is necessary.

For daypacks and everyday carry backpacks it is best stick to a backpack under 39 liters.

Small Backpacks (Under 19L)

Backpack size guide - backpack under 19L

Backpacks under 19 liters are best used for:

  • Essential daily carry (keys, water bottle, sunglasses and other small items)

  • Tech carry (laptop, tablet and accessories)

  • Travel day bags

13 Liter Able Carry Thirteen Daybag

What fits inside a 13L backpack?

  • Large headphones

  • Small book

  • Sweater

  • 1-inch binder

  • Up to 13” laptop

16 Liter Day Owl Backpack

What fits inside a 16L backpack?

  • Large headphones

  • Small book

  • Water bottle

  • Sweater

  • 2x 1-inch binders

  • Up to 13” laptop

SMALL BACKPACKS: Limited Laptop Carry

Backpacks under 14 liters usually are sometimes too small to include a laptop sleeve or compartment for laptops larger than 13-inches. Many smaller backpacks may only include a tablet sleeve or no tech sleeve at all. Keep this in mind if you are looking to purchase a smaller backpack.

It’s not until the 15-19 liter range that you will start to see larger laptop sleeves for laptops up to 15-inches.

SMALL BACKPACKS: Essentials Only

Backpacks under 19 liters are considered “essentials only backpacks”

This means you will be limited to personal items or tech carry with little room for much else. We recommend backpacks under 19 liters to anyone who needs a simple work backpack for things like a laptop, water bottle and snacks. Or as a secondary personal item backpack for airline travel.

Smaller backpacks also make great tech backpacks for anyone who just needs to carry a laptop, tablet, chargers and cables in addition to a few extra personal items.

The key takeaway with backpacks 19 liters and under is compromise. You may be able to pack just enough for an overnight stay or maybe a few large books and binders, but you won’t have the room for both at the same time.

Medium Backpacks  (20-29L)

Backpack size guide - 25 liter vs 20 liter fit

Backpacks 20-29L are best used for:

  • School and college (laptop, multiple books and notebooks)

  • Camera backpacks (DSLR camera, lenses and accessories)

  • Work and gym backpacks (Work items + change of clothes)

20 Liter GBY Ultralight Laptop Day Pack

  • Large headphones

  • Small book

  • 2x hoodies or sweaters

  • Water bottle

  • 2x 1-inch binders

  • Up to 15” laptop

  • Large headphones

  • Water bottle

  • Small book

  • 2x hoodies or sweaters

  • DSLR camera insert

  • 2x 1-inch binders

  • Up to 15” laptop

Medium Backpacks: The Jack of all Trades

Medium size backpacks between 20-29 liters can be considered the Goldilocks of backpacks for most people. Not too small yet not too large - most everyday carry backpacks fall into the medium size category.

Backpacks between 20 liters and 29 liters make great backpacks for school, work and commuting thanks to their roomier main compartments. Here is where you’ll start to fit larger objects like camera gear, extra clothing and multiple large books.

Because medium size backpacks are larger in size, you will also start to see larger compartments and padded sleeves that can accommodate laptops up to 15 and 16 inches.

Large Backpacks (30-39L)

Backpack fit on female - 30 liter vs 35 liter backpack

Backpacks 30-39L are best used for:

  • Extra large school backpacks (multiple large textbooks)

  • Travel backpacks (weekend and carry-on)

  • Large laptops (17” and 18”)

30 Liter The North Face Recon Backpack

What fits inside a 30L backpack?

  • Large headphones

  • Water bottle

  • Small book

  • 2x hoodies or sweaters

  • DSLR camera insert

  • Large textbook

  • 2x 1-inch binders

  • Up to 15” Laptop

35 Liter Jansport Big Student Backpack

Photo: 35L Jansport Big Student Backpack (Amazon)

What fits inside a 35L backpack?

  • Large headphones

  • Pencil case or dopp kit

  • Water bottle

  • Pair of shoes

  • 2x hoodies or sweaters

  • Small book

  • 2x 1-inch binders

  • DSLR camera insert

  • Large textbook

  • Up to 15” laptop

Large Backpacks: Who needs a backpack this large?

Backpacks over 30 liters can be overkill for most people who just need a daily carry backpack for essential items.

But we do recommend large backpacks for students who needs to carry an entire day’s worth of books, lunch and items for after school activities or sports.

These backpacks also make great gym and work backpacks for anyone who needs to carry their daily work items plus a change of clothes and shoes.

One important thing to note is that backpacks over 30 liters are much larger in size so smaller people may have a hard time finding one that fits properly. Poorly designed shoulder straps and back panels may increase the chances that a backpack will feel uncomfortable on smaller bodies. If you are on the smaller side, it pays to choose a backpack that was designed with a women’s fit to help accommodate slim shoulders and shorter torsos.

Large Backpacks: Enter the Travel Backpack

The 30-39 liter range is where you’ll start to see a lot of carry on travel backpacks  - because this capacity is a sweet spot between having lots of packing room without being too large to carry.

Backpacks over 30 liters usually have enough room for multiple days worth of clothing and can even have main compartments large enough to fit bulkier items like shoes.

Large Backpacks: XL Laptop Sleeves

At these larger sizes you can expect to find more options for extra large laptop storage. Because of their larger footprint, most of 18-inch laptop backpacks are in the 30-39 liter size range.

What Else You Should Know

Larger capacity = larger backpack

A basic rule of thumb is that the larger the capacity the larger the backpack will be.

What size backpack do I need? Large vs small backpack sizes

Backpack size will impact fit. While larger people will benefit from wearing a larger backpack, smaller people may want to stick with a smaller backpack size to accommodate slim shoulders and short torsos. This is one reason it is so common to see many women’s backpacks under 20 liters.

Backpack capacity is only part of the story

A backpack’s materials, shape and overall design will impact what fits inside just as much as its capacity number.

16L vs 19L backpack size guide

Example:

We tested two backpacks: the 16 liter Day Owl Backpack and the 19 liter Venque Amsteram 2.0.

Even though the Venque Amsterdam 2.0 technically has more capacity at 19 liters, it could fit just about the same stuff as the smaller 16 liter Day Owl Backpack.

Why? Shape and materials.

The Day Owl features a clamshell backpack design and is made out of flexible waxed canvas material. This allows the backpack itself to flex allowing you to cram extra items inside the main compartment.

The Venque Amsterdam 2.0 is made out of ridged fabric that allows the backpack to keep its shape even when empty. The materials used on the Amsterdam 2.0 plus its top loading design makes the Venque Amsterdam less forgiving when filling the backpack up.

A backpack’s shape and materials are something to keep in mind when determining what can fit inside. Even if two backpacks have the same capacity that doesn’t mean they will fit exactly the same items.

11 Best Personal Item Backpacks For Delta, United, American Airlines and more

Let us help you find the best personal item backpack for your next flight with these 11 awesome picks. The backpacks comply with the personal item bag dimensions for Delta, United, Spirit, American Airlines and more.

When it comes to comfort and versatility nothing beats a well-designed backpack. So it should come as no surprise that a backpack is our airline personal item bag of choice.

If you are looking to use a backpack as a personal item on your next trip then you may be disappointed to discover that most backpacks may be too large or just lacking the features needed to used as an on-flight travel bag.

This is why we decided to do the research and list the best backpacks that can be used as personal items on flights. Our top picks fit a number of important personal item requirements such as size, pocket placement and travel-friendly design features.

Difference Between a Personal Item and a Carry-On

Let’s start with explaining the difference between a personal item and carry-on bag.

The difference is simple: a carry-on bag must fit in the overhead compartment while a personal item must fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Airline carry on vs personal item difference

If a bag is too large to fit in underseat storage then it will be treated as a carry-on bag. If a carry-on bag is too large to fit in overhead storage then it will be treated as a check-in bag and you will not able to bring it on the airplane cabin with you.

Examples of carry-on bags include carry-on luggage, weekender backpacks and large travel bags and duffels. Personal item bags include a purse, briefcase or small backpack.

Each airline has their own specific measurements for what can be considered a carry-on and a personal item so it’s important that you check with your airline to make sure your bags fit the measurement requirements.

When it comes to personal items it’s also important to understand that underseat dimensions can vary by airplane, boarding class and seat location. For example, there is no underseat stowage in the front rows behind the bulkhead and smaller planes tend to have smaller underseat storage dimensions.

Knack Pack Series 1 - Personal item backpack under airplane seat

Shown above: Knack Pack Series 1 expandable backpack

Is a backpack a personal item?

Can a backpack be a personal item? The simple answer is yes, a backpack can be a personal item.

The important thing to note about airline personal items is that just about any bag can be used as long as it fits under the airline’s personal item dimensions. This includes backpacks, diaper bags, purses and briefcases.

The key to making a backpack count as a personal item is to make sure it’s small enough to meet the size requirements. Many backpacks may be too bulky to fit underneath an airline seat or can be considered too large by the airline.

Below is a chart of the most popular airlines in the United States with their stated personal item bag size. This chart was last updated on 09/24/2019. Make sure to check your airline’s official website for the latest carry-on and personal item size requirements.

Airline Personal Item Size
American Airlines 18" x 14" x 8"
Alaska Airlines No specific size
Air Canada 17" x 13" x 6"
Delta No specific size (see our Delta size guide)
Frontier 18" x 14" x 8"
JetBlue 17" x 13" x 8"
Southwest 18.5" x 13.5" x 8.5"
Spirit 18" x 14" x 8"
United Airlines 17" x 10" x 9"

At 22 liters, the Classic Backpack is roomy enough to hold airline travel essentials, such as headphones, clothing, water bottles, and snacks.

The Division's compact dimensions also meet most major airline personal item requirements, including those of United Airlines and JetBlue, which have more restrictive personal item size limits. This makes the Timbuk2 Division a reliable go-to underseat bag for years to come!

  • Bag dimensions: 17.3” x 10.6” x 5.12”

Db The Hugger personal item backpack for travel

Db The Strøm Backpack (20L)

Available in a ton of fun colors, the Db Strøm is the backpack for those who want to pack as much as possible while still staying under most airline personal item bag size requirements. This is thanks to the Strøm’s roomy 20 liter clamshell main compartment for easy packing of clothes, toiletries and more.

Since all personal items must be stowed away underneath an airline seat, we really like the Strøm’s large top pocket that allows for easy access to things like a phone, charging cables or headphones without having to pull the backpack out from underneath the seat. It’s small details like these that make the Db Strøm a perfect travel companion.

A great feature of the Db Strøm is that it can attach to Db’s roller luggage using the brand’s innovative Hook-Up System. This allows for easy carry of all your bags at once which can make a big difference on hectic travel days.

  • Bag Dimensions: 17.7” x 10.6” x 5.5”

The backpack has travel-friendly features such as a side water bottle pocket, outer zip pockets for small items and a generous main compartment for clothes, toiletries and more. When used as an airline personal item we like that you have access to a zip pocket located on the top of the backpack lid for easy access to essentials like headphones or a phone while the bag is stored underneath the airplane seat. The laptop sleeve also has side zip access so you don’t have to open up the main compartment to access your tech.

The Everlane ReNew Transit backpack is designed to be unisex and can be worn by just about anyone. And thanks to Everlane’s multiple color options you can choose the right one to fit your style and taste.

  • Bag Dimensions: 17.5” x 12” x 7.25”

How to Choose the Best Personal Item Backpack

If you have read this far and didn’t love our any of the backpack choices then that’s ok

Each backpack on this list was chosen because it fit our own personal item bag requirements and you can use these same guidelines to find the right personal item backpack for you.

These requirements include:

  1. Backpack size

  2. Pocket accessibility

  3. Travel features

  4. Backpack quality

Choosing a personal item bag: travel essentials

1. Backpack Size

It’s no secret that airlines will crack down on the size of your personal items and carry-ons, this is especially true on smaller planes and crowded flights. We made sure that each backpack on our list fits the maximum personal item bag size for most airlines.

Southwest Airlines has one of the largest personal item size limits at 18.5”x 13.5” x 8.5” while United Airlines has one of the smallest personal item bag limits at 17” x 10” x 9”. Since each airline bag requirement is different we can’t guarantee that every backpack on this list will be the right size for you next trip, but we have found that 18-inches is the average maximum height for most airline personal item bags.

When it comes to carrying capacity, backpacks under 20 liters are usually small enough to be considered a personal item with the most common size being around 18 liters. While you can’t expect to pack for an entire 2-week vacation at this capacity, it’s the perfect size to carry the essentials you will need for a comfortable flight. Travel pillows, water bottles, books and a laptop can all comfortably fit inside an 18-20 liter backpack.

2. Pocket Accessibility

Another must-have in a personal item backpack is good pocket placement that can be easily accessed while you are seated on the flight. A personal item is meant to be stored underneath the seat in front of you and the most important items in your bag should be easily accessible.

Ideal pocket placement will be on the top and front of the bag. This allows you to grab small essentials like headphones, charging cables and snacks without having to remove the entire backpack from underneath the seat.

Laptop accessibility is also important as you will want to be able to quickly grab or store your laptop without having to rummage through the backpack’s main compartment. Backpacks with side or top laptop access are the best options when choosing a personal item bag. It also makes going through security checks at the airport much smoother as you’ll have quicker access to your tech.

3. Travel-friendly Features

Travel-friendly features include things like trolley sleeves so that you can attach the backpack to rolling luggage, passport or ticket stash pockets and lockable zippers. Find out which travel features you can’t live without and go with a backpack that includes as much of them as possible. This may sound like a no-brainer but it’s still worth mentioning. Getting to the airport and not having a quick pocket to stash your airline tickets is a sorry fate.

4. Backpack Quality

The final requirement we have for choosing the best personal item backpack is quality. When choosing any travel bag you want to make sure the quality is good enough to withstand the rough handling usually encountered on busy trips.

Brands with a reputation of good quality like Patagonia, eBags and Fjallraven were sure to make our list. But we also made sure to not mention backpacks that were too cheap. We’re talking about those $20 backpacks that may get the job done but fall apart with repeated use.

You want to make sure the bag you purchase can be your go-to travel bag for years to come. This means spending a little more on brands that offer quality materials, good construction, and smart designs.

If you are looking for a versatile backpack that can also be used as a daypack once at your destination make sure to look out for high quality materials that are water resistant. If protecting expensive tech on your travels is important, then going with bags with extra padding in the laptop sleeve and separate fleece-lined pockets for small electronics will be your best bet.
