Best 18x14x8 Personal Item Bags (Spirit, Frontier, United Airlines)

We tested the best 18x14x8 personal item backpacks and explore which ones can be used for one-bag packing with Basic Economy tickets when carry-on luggage is not allowed.

Carry-on luggage fees! Checked bags at the gate! These are just some of the surprises you can run into when traveling. Trust us, we've been there and share your frustration.

With the rise in popularity of the basic economy fare, more and more people are deciding to ditch the carry-on bag and travel with just a personal item. Many major airlines are including a free personal item with a basic economy ticket but it needs to fit underneath your seat in order to be allowed.

The good news is that many domestic airlines in the United States, such as American, Allegiant, Frontier, and Spirit Airlines, all share the same standard personal item size limit of 18 x 14 x 8 inches, which gives you the chance to have just one bag for multiple airlines.

In this buying guide we are going to focus on backpacks that not only fit the 18x14x8 bag requirement and have the best quality, organization and features. Those looking for smaller personal items bags should check out our buying guides for United Airlines (9x10x17) and JetBlue (17x13x8).

What You Need to Know About Personal Items

A personal item is any bag that can fit underneath the airplane seat in front of you. If a bag is too large to fit underneath the seat it will considered carry-on baggage and will have to placed in the overhead bin. Travelers with Basic Economy tickets, are often only allowed one personal item bag and will be charged an extra fee for any carry-on item they board with.

Below are the official links to airlines with an 18" x 14" x 8" personal item size limit to help you determine the most up to date carry-on and personal item size restrictions. It’s always a good idea to double check your airline before your next trip.

How We Tested Each Bag

Size Limit Check

We measured the bags we tested to confirm that they fit the personal item maximum dimensions of 14" x 18" x 8" or under. Sometimes the bag measurements on the brand website can be off and we wanted to make sure there were no surprises.

T-shirt packing test - two personal item backpacks filled with t-shirts

Shown above: Fjallraven Kanken 15” and Db Hugger 20L backpacks tested in our studio

Packing Test

Our packing test is simple - how many t-shirts can fit inside the main compartment? This will give you a standard way to visualize what can fit inside and will be very useful if you plan on ditching the carry-on bag for your next trip and just bringing a personal item to take advantage of cheap basic economy tickets. We used a men's size small t-shirt for our testing.

Tested! Backpacks 18 x 14 x 8 inches or Under

The Ridge Commuter 20L Backpack

If great organization of your travel essentials is what you need, then The Ridge Commuter Weatherproof backpack is the bag you'll want to get! This backpack has just over a dozen pockets for organizing all of your flight essentials. It even has a couple of secret compartments to hide stuff like a passport, wallet and Apple Airtag.

What makes this backpack special is its “dual access” zipper design that allows you to open the Commuter like both a regular backpack or a panel loader clamshell backpack for easy packing. The Ridge even includes a removable velcro divider to simplify packing of clothing and toiletries.

The size of The Ridge Commuter is perfect for major airlines and fits the size restrictions for a personal item on American Airlines, Spirit, Allegiant and Frontier Airlines. Plus, its weatherproof construction means you can use it as a daypack at your destination rain or shine.

Our testing: The Ridge Commuter backpack can fit 21 t-shirts inside the main compartment. This makes it a great option as a packing backpack for one-bag travel on short trips! We found that even when packed completely full, the Ridge Commuter does a great job at keeping its shape and staying under the 18x14x8 bag size limit.

Knack Pack Series 1 expandable 18x14x8 backpack

Knack Pack Expandable Backpack Series 1

Say goodbye to baggage fees! The Knack Pack Series 1 has to be one of our favorite travel backpacks for travel thanks to its expandable travel compartment and myriad of clever travel features.

It's the little things that make the Knack Pack it such a pleasure to use, such as lockable zippers, a trolley sleeve to attach the bag to a suitcase, and anti-microbial lining on the inside to prevent stinky smells.

Knack Packs come in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. For use as an under-seat bag, we recommend going with the size Small, which can fit underneath the most airline seats when fully expanded. You could also use the size Medium as an underseat bag when not expanded. For an in-depth comparison of all Knack Pack models, check out our Knack Pack Series 1 vs Series 2 comparison.

Our testing: We found that the Knack Pack Series 1 Small can fit eight t-shirts inside the main compartment and an additional 20 t-shirts inside the expandable packing compartment, giving you a total of 28 t-shirts!

Although the Knack Pack offers the most packing space out of any bag on this list, it measures slightly over the 18x14x8 personal item measurements with a 9” depth (the maximum is 8”) when fully expanded. Just be careful not to overpack this bag when expanded and you should have no issues fitting the Knack Pack underneath your airplane seat.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 12 x 5 inches (17 x 12 x 9 inches expanded)

  • Capacity: 15-27L

  • 13" laptop sleeve on the outside

  • Packing compartment opens like a suitcase

Db Hugger 20L travel backpack

Db Hugger Backpack 20L

There are so many great things to say about the Db Hugger backpack - where should we begin?

For starters, this backpack gives you 20 liters of packing space while still being small enough to stay within standard 14 x 18 x 8 bag requirements. It's a winner already! But unlike other 20 liter bags with bulky pockets, the Hugger gives you a lot of open space just for packing making it perfect to take as your free personal item on Basic Economy flight.

One of our favorite features of the Db Hugger backpack is its top pocket, which provides quick access to small items such as headphones, chewing gum, and other flying essentials without requiring you to remove the backpack from underneath the airline seat. The Db Hugger also includes a 13" laptop sleeve on the outside, making it easy to access your tech without having to fuss with your packing.

Our testing: The Db Hugger 20L can fit 19 t-shirts inside the main compartment and doesn't balloon out to accidentally add more inches like other laptop backpacks when packed full. The secret weapon is Db's Rib Cage Technology that gives the backpack its structured shape while keeping it lightweight.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17.72 x 10.8 x 7.7 inches

  • Capacity: 20L

  • 13” padded laptop sleeve on the outside

  • Large packing compartment that is lined with mesh pockets for organization

  • Available in many different colors

Chrome Ruckas 14L personal item backpack for airlines

Chrome Ruckas 14L Backpack

The Chrome Ruckas 14L is one of our top personal item backpack recommendations and it’s easy to see why once you explore all it has to offer. Its compact size makes it great for flying with budget airlines with strict size limits making personal item compliance one less thing to worry about on busy travel days. The price is also right - for under $100, you get the features of a more expensive backpack with compromising on quality.

Although this backpack only has a 14 liter carrying capacity, it actually a roomy 14 liters and more than enough room for travel essentials like a laptop, a light jacket and tech pouches. The external storage also allows you to avoid taking up precious cargo space on the inside. Along with an external rear laptop compartment, the side water bottle pocket and gusseted front pocket make it easy to grab items quickly when you are in a hurry. Add in a trolley sleeve and removable chest strap and you have the perfect travel companion.

Our testing: The Chrome Ruckas 14L Backpack can fit 16 t-shirts inside the main compartment. We appreciate how this backpack does a great job at holding it's shape and not bulging out too much when packed full. However, this backpack really shines as a small pack for in-flight entertainment and comfort staples like tech, sweaters and a neck pillow. If you are looking for the perfect one-bag travel bag to avoid airline fees, you might one to go with another option with more internal packing room.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 10.75 x 5 inches

  • Capacity: 14L

  • Rear 13" laptop compartment + internal 14” laptop sleeve (dual laptop backpack)

  • Internal organizer pockets for smaller items

  • Trolley sleeve for attaching to rolling luggage

tomtoc Voyage-T50 - 18x14x8 underseat travel bag

tomtoc Voyage-T50 Backpack

Unlike most other backpacks on the market, the tomtoc Votage-T50 Backpack was designed from the ground up to be used as a personal item backpack on flights. Its dimensions fall well under the coveted 14" x 18" x 8" size limit when fully packed. This backpack is also chock full of travel-specific features that many other backpacks overlook. Our favorite are the thick handles on each side of the bag to make it easy to grab the backpack from both underseat storage and overhead compartments. Add in a trolley sleeve for attaching the backpack to rolling luggage and you have the perfect companion for weekend getaways and business trips.

The main compartment on this backpack was made for easy packing. We could easily fit 2-3 days worth of clothing inside the main compartment. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on if you are light or heavy packer but it’s fair to say that the tomtoc Votage-T50 makes a great option for one-bag carry on quick trips.

Our testing: The tomtoc Voyage-T50 20L can fit 20 t-shirts inside the packing compartment. When you consider that you still have a separate tech compartment that can hold a laptop, tablet and accessories in the rear as well as exterior pockets for extra storage, you are looking at a lot of packing space for such a compact bag. We found that the front of the backpack will bulge outward when overpacked. However, even when the bag is stuffed to the brim it will still fall under the 8-inch depth requirement for airline travel.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 12 x 5 inches

  • Capacity: 20L

  • Roomy main compartment for packing

  • Rear tech compartment for 16” laptop and 12.9” iPad

  • Designed for airline carry - grab handles, trolley sleeve and easy access pockets

Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15" backpack

Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15"

The Fjallraven Kanken is a favorite amongst travelers and it's easy to why! The Kanken is made from a tough Vinylon-F material that keeps the bag's square shape so that you don't have to worry about going over the personal item maximum size when stuffing it full. This is the kind of peace of mind you'll be thankful for when bag on strict flights.

Don't be fooled by the Kanken's small size! Anyone traveling with a basic economy ticket on Frontier or Spirit Airlines will appreciate the wide open main compartment that can fit more than you think. This is thanks to the Kanken's simple construction. There aren't many pockets on the inside to take up much needed packing room.

Our testing: The Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15 can fit 22 t-shirts inside the main packing area while still giving you the outside laptop sleeve for your tech and a pocket up front for smaller items. No matter how you pack the Kanken, it will always stay under the airline size restrictions.

If you want more packing room, we recommend going with the larger Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 17 which measures a little larger at 16.53 x 11.81 x 7.08 inches

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 15.75 x 11.03 x 6.29 inches

  • Capacity: 18L

  • 15" padded laptop sleeve on the outside

  • Durable yet lightweight construction

Troubadour Bivy Bivy Tote Backpack for travel

Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack

The Troudadour Bivy is a convertible backpack and tote bag that allows you to carry it how you want, when you want. We like to turn it into a tote bag to hide the shoulder straps when using it as a personal item for neat storage under the airplane seat. Trust us, it makes life easier.

Troubadour is known for their great quality backpacks and you can be sure to expect lots of pockets for organization and a high end design that is sure to turn some heads at the airport. The Bivy Tote Backpack is no exception to this rule. It gives you lots of space on the inside to pack for a short trip and must-have pockets for water bottles, small travel items and a laptop.

The fact that you can turn it into a tote bag scores some big points if you plan on using it as a daybag at your destination. Need a nice bag for dinner? This is the bag you'll want to bring. Expecting rainy weather? No problem, the Bivy is made with water resistant materials and zippers (in fact, it's one of our favorite waterproof backpacks for women).

Our testing: The Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack can fit 24 t-shirts inside the main compartment making it a great option for one-bag trips. This bag does have a tendancy of ballooning when overpacking, making it wider than the stated 11-inch width but it does not go over the 18 x 14 x 8 maximum size in linear inches. In other words, even if you stuff it full, this bag can squeeze underneath the seat because it’s not structured. Was that too confusing? We hope not.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17 x 11 x 7 inches

  • Capacity: 21L

  • Convertible from backpack to tote bag

  • Highly water resistant construction

Sherpani Soleil AT 18x14x8 backpack for travel

Sherpani Soleil Anti-Theft Travel Bag

The Sherpani Soleil is easily the most versatile bag on this list! This convertible backpack allows you to also wear it as a backpack, crossbody bag or tote bag. But the real win are the advanced anti-theft features that are built into each bag. Not only do you get lockable zippers, RFID-safe protection and anti-slash fabric but each Soleil includes Return.me lost and found technology that helps you track down you bag worldwide if it were to ever get lost. This service is free of charge with each Soleil purchase.

At a 14-liter capacity, the Sherpani Soleil will be on the smaller side. We found the overall size great for people with slim shoulders or shoulder torsos who usually find most backpacks too bulky. Inside we were able to fit our in-flight essentials like a laptop, water bottles and light jacket. So, if you are looking for a bag that can be used for multi-day travel packing, you might want to look at some of the other options on this list.

Our testing: The Sherpani Soleil backpack can fit only 14 t-shirts inside the main compartment. This backpack isn't ideal as a packing backpack for one-bag travel but we do recommend it as a personal item when paired with a larger carry-on bag or checked luggage. The built-in luggage sleeve makes it super easy to attach to luggage for easy airport carry.

Check out our Sherpani Soleil review for an in-depth look!

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 15 x 11 x 4.5 inches

  • Capacity: 14L

  • 15" padded laptop sleeve

  • Convertible: Backpack, crossbody or tote bag

  • Advanced anti-theft design makes it a great daybag in busy cities and tourist areas

Traveling with a checked bag? No problem. The Everlane Renew Transit even includes a pass-through strap so that you can attach it to rolling luggage for hands-free carry at airports and hotels.

Timbuk2 Division laptop backpack for travel

Timbuk2 Division Laptop Backpack

Rugged, comfortable, and packed with great pockets, the Timbuk2 Division gives you everything you need to travel with confidence. The Division is our favorite laptop backpack for carrying tech on flights, thanks to its 15-inch laptop compartment and a second padded sleeve inside the main compartment that can hold a second device.

Not only does the Timbuk2 Division meet the personal item requirement of 18x14x8 for airlines like Spirit and Frontier Airlines, but it is also small enough to be used on other popular airlines, like United Airlines and JetBlue, that have stricter personal item size limits.

Our testing: Our packing test revealed that the Timbuk2 Division can fit 22 t-shirts inside the main compartment. At 22 liters, you could use the Timbuk2 Division for packing but we recommend it as a small backpack for travel essentials to compliment luggage stored in the overhead bin.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 17.3 x 10.6 x 5.12 inches

  • Capacity: 22L

  • Weight: 2.2 lbs

  • 15" padded laptop compartment

Matein Travel Laptop backpack for underseat storage on airplane

Matein Travel Laptop Backpack

Matein makes an affordable laptop backpack for both travel and daily carry that we recommend to those on a tight budget. Now, there are two versions of this backpack: the 15.6 inch and 17 inch versions. For personal item travel, get the 15.6 inch version.

Some great features you can expect from the Matein Travel Laptop backpack are lots of pockets for organization, a hidden pocket for valuables and a passport and a USB port for charging. Matein doesn't say what the capacity of this backpack is but we guess it's around 20-25 liters.

Our testing: The main compartment of the Matein Travel Laptop backpack can fit 22 t-shirts making it a great Spirit or Frontier Airlines personal item bag for packing to avoid additional charges. When packed full the depth of the Matein backpack is closer to the 8" depth personal item limit but will still be compliant.

For an in-depth look at this bag, head over to our Matein Travel Laptop Backpack review.

Features at a glance:

  • Dimensions: 18 x 12 x 7.8

12 Best Roll Top Waterproof Backpacks - Tested & Reviewed

We tested the best waterproof roll top backpacks for everything from urban commuting to outdoor adventures.

The inspiration to find the best roll-top waterproof backpack started with one rainy morning during a trip to another city. I was in a coffee shop, enjoying a hot coffee and answering emails on my laptop. In less than an hour, the weather conditions shifted dramatically, turning a light drizzle into a heavy downpour. My hotel was just two blocks away but the storm shook my faith in the short walk. I carefully packed my laptop into my small backpack and braced for the wet journey. With each raindrop hitting the backpack's zipper, I wished I had traveled with a waterproof backpack instead.

Thankfully the laptop was fine. But it was a close call.

This soggy experience led us to searching for the best waterproof backpacks. But what kind of design could be used as an urban backpack during a rainy commute? Or what about as a dry bag for off-the-beaten-path travel adventures? The answer, we found, was a roll top backpack.

In the world of backpacks, the roll-top design is unique. Unlike backpack zippers, where water can leak through the zipper teeth, roll top backpacks offer superior waterproof protection by design. The nature of a roll-top closure allows the top opening to roll into itself and create a natural waterproof seal. As long as the fabric itself is waterproof, your stuff will stay dry and protected when the bag is properly rolled together.

In this buying guide, we tested numerous waterproof roll top backpacks to find the best ones based on quality, features and comfort. Turns out there are a lot of great brands and designs to choose from. However, through testing and research, we have narrowed down the options. Whether you're looking for a waterproof commuter backpack or seeking a dry bag to keep your gear safe during your next Kayaking trip, this curated list will guide you to the right waterproof roll-top backpack for your needs.

Our Favorite Waterproof Roll Top Backpacks

Shown Above:

  1. Chrome Urban Ex 30L - Tough urban commuter backpack with padded laptop sleeve

  2. Got Bag Rolltop Backpack - Versatile waterproof roll top that can switch from laptop backpack to outdoor pack

  3. Rains Rolltop Backpack - Sleek roll top backpack for work and school

  4. Ortlieb Commuter-Daypack City - Lightweight waterproof commuter backpack with removable laptop sleeve.

How We Tested These Backpacks

Our testing include outdoor testing in the rain (with the occasional help of a garden hose) as well as indoor testing inside our studio. There were specific features we looked for as described below.

Five roll top waterproof backpacks on the ground. The backpacks are wet and being tested for durability and waterproofness.

Shown Above: A few of the roll top backpacks we tested outdoors

Waterproof Roll-Top Design

Along with a rolltop closure, we searched for backpacks that had a high quality construction and great attention to detail. This included features like taped or welded seams, waterproof fabrics, and water resistant zippers. Value for the price was also important, so we included budget options in our search.

For outdoor activities, we looked for submersible backpacks with a roll-top design, also known as dry bags. These packs are made with waterproof materials and come with sealed seams. Tarpaulin and PVC are examples of heavy-duty waterproof materials that are commonly used in roll top dry bags, making them ideal for activities like kayaking, fishing and boating.

While a waterproof dry bag made of tarpaulin or PVC are great for outdoor use, it's usually overkill for daily use. That led us to explore coated fabrics. Many roll-top bags we came across were made from familiar materials like nylon or polyester but had an added waterproof coating or included a waterproof backing. Although you can't submerge these backpacks in water, a backpack with a rolltop closure crafted from coated fabric is more than enough protection during heavy rain (unless you live in the lost underwater city of Atlantis.)

Hand removing a laptop from the side zipper on the Rains Rolltop waterproof backpack. The backpack is wet but the laptop has stayed dry inside the pocket.

Shown Above: The external laptop compartment on the Rains Rolltop Backpack

Great Pockets and Compartments

It's easy to find dozens of waterproof roll top backpacks that are nothing but a big empty main compartment. These are great for some people, but for most the best waterproof backpacks are versatile. And a versatile backpack has great pockets and compartments.

We looked for roll top backpacks that give you easy access to essentials through external pockets. A water bottle pocket or a small pocket for a wallet or phone can make or break a daily commuter backpack. But the best waterproof backpacks also give you internal organization like a laptop pocket or a zippered pocket for small items. Outdoor backpacks fare well with lash points for external attachments. These are the kind of features we paid attention to when compiling our list.

Must-Have Comfort Features

The experience of being caught in a downpour, with valuable items like a laptop at risk, stresses the importance of a waterproof backpack. But protection from a rain storm is just one aspect of a great pack. What about comfort? If you plan on lugging around a backpack all day, it's just as important that the pack is as comfortable as possible.

With this in mind, we searched for waterproof backpacks that include comfort features such as padded shoulder straps and breathable back panels. For longer journeys and heavier loads, features like an adjustable chest strap and waist strap are important to help distribute weight and pressure from the shoulders.

Rains Rolltop Rucksack waterproof roll top backpack

Best Waterproof Backpack for Work: Rains Rolltop Rucksack

Made from Rain’s signature waterproof fabric, the Rolltop Rucksack is a highly water-resistant backpack that offers a minimalist twist on the classic cycling backpack. When we got our hands on one, the first thing we noticed was how nice the bag felt. The PU waterproof fabric has a very elegant matte finish and the heavy-duty metal roll top buckle really added to the quality. Despite the waterproof fabric and metal accents, the Rolltop Rucksack is surprisingly lightweight. In fact, it's easily one of the lightest waterproof roll top backpack we have tested.

The Rains Rolltop Rucksack features a side-access laptop sleeve that is protected by a water-resistant zipper. You also have an extra zippered pocket on the front for easy access to small items while the main compartment is reserved for bulkier items. Got Bag Rolltop Backpack - waterproof roll top backpack

Most Versatile Waterproof Roll Top Backpack: Got Bag Rolltop

The Got Bag Rolltop stands out as one of the most versatile roll-top waterproof backpacks we have tested. While many waterproof backpacks are tailored specifically for either urban commuting or outdoor adventures, the Got Bag Rolltop seamlessly bridges the gap between work days and weekends. It's secret weapon is its removable 15-inch laptop sleeve inside the main compartment. This smart feature allows you to quickly transition from daily laptop backpack to outdoor bag in seconds. Roll Top Waterproof Backpack FAQs

1. What materials are commonly used in waterproof roll top backpacks?

Most waterproof roll top backpacks use either PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) or coated fabrics. PVC is a thermoplastic polymer that is completely waterproof, making it ideal for activities like kayaking, fishing, and boating. On the other hand, coated fabrics, such as nylon or polyester coated with PU (polyurethane) or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), retain flexibility and durability while offering waterproof properties. These are recommended for daily commuting, work, school, or travel.

2. How can I ensure a backpack is truly waterproof?

To make sure a backpack is truly waterproof and not just water resistant, pay attention to its construction, especially the seams. While many highly water resistant backpacks are made with waterproof materials, it’s the seams that allow them to be fully waterproof. While taped seams, commonly found in high-performance waterproof clothing, offer basic waterproofing, welded seams provide superior protection. Welded seams fuse two pieces of material together using heat, creating a 100% waterproof seal without any holes for water to penetrate.

3. Why are roll top backpacks preferred over zippered ones for waterproofing?

Roll top backpacks offer superior waterproof protection by design. The top opening rolls into itself, creating a natural waterproof seal. As long as the fabric is waterproof, the contents remain dry when the bag is properly rolled together. In contrast, zippers, even water-resistant ones, can fail over time, potentially allowing water to seep in. For a foolproof waterproof solution, a roll top is recommended.

4. What features should I look for in a waterproof roll top backpack for outdoor activities?

For outdoor activities like camping, kayaking, and boating, look for a waterproof roll top backpack with welded seams or a unibody design. These backpacks, often called dry bags, have a submersible construction that comes in handy with activities near water. Other useful features include exterior hooks and loops for attaching the bag to boats or bikes and high visibility colors for easy spotting.

5. How do I choose a waterproof roll top backpack for commuting or urban carry?

Let's be honest, you probably don't need a submersible backpack for urban commuting, work, school, or daily carry. The main concern with a daily backpack is unpredictable weather conditions, like heavy rain. A roll top backpack with a water-resistant construction will usually do the trick.

With roll top backpacks for commuting or urban carry expect reflective panels for added nighttime visibility, easy access pockets and making sure the bag has ample space for daily essentials. Features to look out for include a laptop compartment, side pocket for a water bottle, and small pockets for organization of stuff like a phone, wallet and tech accessories.

A Comfortable Fit

There are tons of cute work backpacks out there, but why do so many have thin backpack straps and terrible comfort features? Whether you need a backpack for your daily commute or business trips, having a comfortable backpack is important. This is why we paid attention to finding packs with padded adjustable straps, a comfortable back panel and a chest strap when needed.

Our main priority was finding women's work backpacks that are not only comfortable but a good fit. For many women, most backpacks are either too broad in the shoulder straps or too long on the back. This is why we focused on backpacks that are a better fit for people with narrower shoulders and a shorter torso length. Although "professional backpacks for women" can be worn by anyone, it's worth pointing out this distinction when we talk about fit. For larger work bags, check out our list of the best work backpacks for men as well as our business casual backpack buying guide.

Great Organization

A backpack for everyday use has to help you stay organized. We looked for bags that can be used by professional women with specific features like a dedicated laptop sleeves and exterior pockets for easy access to small items. Just as important is a roomy main compartment that has enough room for work items such as a lunch, water bottle and light jacket or sweater.

Business travelers may need a daily bag that can double as their travel bag. While others would like ample space for workout clothes and other after-work activities. For safe daily commutes, we included our favorite women's backpacks with hidden pockets. Our Testing Process

The Backpackies team tested dozens of women's work backpacks and only highlighted the very best. Our main priorities when testing were comfort, organization and style. We also kept in mind that a "work backpack for women" is a broad category. This is why we focused on selections that are versatile enough for both daily commuting and business travel.

Our testing items included a water bottle, laptop, tablet, tech chargers, a light jacket, business binders, notebooks, shoes, clothing, and personal essentials like cosmetics. Each backpack was evaluated by their easy access to items as well as their organization of these items. Many of these backpacks we have personally used in the real world for our own commutes and weekend getaways, while others underwent testing in our studio. The top picks chosen in this buying guide were the ones that performed the best.

Finally, comfort and fit were just as important as style. If the backpack wasn't comfortable to wear, then we just did not include it.

Work Backpacks for Women - Common FAQs

  • The short answer is yes, a backpack can be considered professional. The secret lies in choosing the right design.

For professional settings, choose a backpack with a mature and sophisticated design. This means avoiding loud colors and sporty designs that look like they belong on a hiking trail instead of a client meeting. Dangling straps, like those from hip belts or shoulder straps, should also be avoided for a cleaner look. In this buying guide we really tried to avoid women's backpacks with elements like mesh water bottle pockets, bungee chords and compression strap so to ensure that the bag is as sleek looking as possible while still being functional.

When it comes to materials, classic choices like high-weave nylon and genuine or faux leather are recommended for women's professional work backpacks. Sticking to neautral colors such as black, navy, gray and beige will also elevate the bag to a more professional look. These rules aren't set in stone, and what you ultimatly wear depends on how casual your work setting is, but sticking with tried and true materials and colors will add up to a more professional look.

  • For most women, a backpack that measures 17-inches or under in height will provide the best fit. This will accommodate for a shorter torso and provide a more proportional look when worn on the back. Given the need for a more compact fit, we found that many women's backpack for work can range from 13 to 25 liters in capacity. Although 13 liters is on the smaller side, it gives you just enough room to organize smaller work essentials such as a laptop, pens, a wallet, water bottle and cosmetics kit. A 25 liter pack is better suited for bulkier items like multiple binders and folders, a jacket or lunch box.

To get a better idea of what size backpack you really need, make sure to check out our Backpack Size Guide. This helpful guide illustrates what fits in different size packs.

  • With commuter backpacks our emphasis is always on comfort. If you plan on wearing your work backpack for long periods of time during daily commutes then having comfortable padded adjustable straps and a breathable back panel is a must. Other features like exterior pockets for quick access to items like a metro card or umbrella are also helpful.

  • Absolutely! A good professional backpack is versatile enough to use for both daily carry and travel. If you need a bag that does both make sure to choose a backpack with travel-specific features such as a trolley sleeve, water bottle pockets and easy-access pockets for travel essentials. Many backpacks also include safety features such as secret anti-theft pockets for items like passports, wallets and other valuables. These are all must-have features for traveling and the good news is that many modern women's work backpacks do include them!

Find the best urban daypack for EDC and commuting with our list of sleek options.

If you are looking for an urban backpack than chances are you want something that’s a little bit different that what you would find at the local sporting goods store.

These backpacks aren’t for hiking or extended travel - instead we focus on urban EDC backpacks with must-have features for commuting around the city and sleek styles that are anything but boring.

What is an Urban Backpack?

An urban backpack is a type of backpack designed for everyday carry in the city and carry-on travel. Intended to keep you comfortable and your gear protected, these backpacks do best in crowded city streets, public transportation and airport terminals.

These backpacks are usually smaller than big travel bags and are designed to be practical for everyday use. Our ideal carrying capacity for an urban backpack is between 20 and 30 liters but you can follow our backpack size guide to find the best size for you. But in general, we kept our suggestions within the 20-30L range. When it comes to design, you can expect an urban backpack to look sleek and stylish with modern profiles and materials.

How We Picked and Tested

4 urban backpacks in a row. From left to right: The Ridge Commuter backpack, The North Face Recon laptop backpack, Troubadour Pioneer city backpack, tomtoc TechPack-T73

Everyday Organization

Keys, wallet, phone and tech. The perfect backpack for urban carry has enough pockets to keep you organized day in and day out. We focused on backpacks with small pockets for essentials, a water bottle holder and easy access to your most important stuff.

And no urban backpack would be complete without a padded laptop sleeve.

Inside the Troubadour Pioneer urban backpack. The pockets are filled with everyday items like a laptop, notebook, phone, pen and charging cables.

High Quality

Our focus in this buying guide is on high quality backpacks that are rugged enough for daily use. With that said, we tried to avoid cheap bags.

Listen, there is nothing wrong with a cheapo bag from Amazon (some of them aren't bad). But we would rather concentrate on great quality backpacks made from tough materials that won't fall apart in a few months. Ballistic nylon, cotton canvas and waterproof fabrics are more our style.

Water Resistance

Living in the city means dealing with unpredictable weather, which is why having a water-resistant backpack is important. Whether you are looking for a waterproof backpack for college or a bag to keep you dry during commuters - a water-resistant backpack will give you the peace of mind you need. We tried to focus on the best city backpacks made with waterproof fabrics and rainproof zippers.

Able Carry Daily Plus water resistant urban backpack. The backpack is wet and water droplets do not penetrate the X-Pac material on the Able Carry Daily Plus.

Comfortable Commuting

Having a comfortable backpack is essential for those commuting to work, school, or running errands in the city. We looked for well-padded backpack straps and breathable back panels for comfort during daily commutes. Larger backpacks should also have a sternum strap to help with weight distribution of heavy loads.

The Daily Plus backpack is slightly bigger than Able Carry's Daily Backpack. It has more pockets, better organization but with the same classic design. If choosing between the two, go with the Daily Plus.

Chrome Barrage Cargo waterproof roll top urban commuter backpack

Chrome Barrage Cargo

The Chrome Barrage Cargo is one of the toughest commuter backpacks on the market. It's waterproof, so your stuff stays dry even in the worst weather. Our favorite feature is the cargo net on the outside. It gives you extra storage for stuff like bike helmet, shoes, or bags from unexpected shopping trips. The roll top also allows you to use the Barrage Cargo as an expandable backpack to add more room inside by unrolling the top.

We have to be honest and say that this isn't an urban laptop backpack. In fact, there isn't even a padded laptop sleeve. Instead this is a backpack for those who need a tough-as-nails waterproof bag over a backpack with a million pockets. It's a commuter bag for those who value simplicity over marketing gimmicks.

For a closer look, check out our Chrome Barrage Cargo review.

  • Specs:

    • Capacity: 18L

    • Materials: 1050D Nylon and waterproof TPE tarp

    • Weight: 3lbs

    • Padded laptop sleeve: None

Features that make the Barrage Cargo a great urban backpack

    • Welded waterproof tarp liner makes the main compartment completely waterproof

    • Cargo net allows for extra storage of bulky items

    • Rolltop main compartment expands from 18-22 liters as needed

    • Chrome seatbelt chest strap (it's fun to use!)

    Built for the Daily Grind

Although we made sure to feature the best urban laptop backpacks, we had to make the exception with the Chrome Barrage Cargo. The Chrome Barrage Cargo does not have a padded laptop sleeve, instead it's just one big waterproof bucket for your stuff. No laptop compartment. No million pockets for school supplies. Just a good reliable roll top backpack.

But we had to include the Barrage Cargo for its construction. It's tough and reliable.

The outer shell of the Barrage Cargo is made of rugged 1050D nylon, and the inside of the main compartment is lined with a heavy-weight waterproof tarp. The shoulder straps can be adjusted with metal buckles, not plastic. Add in Chrome's signature seat-belt sternum strap buckle and better control over weight distribution with heavy loads. If this backpack ever does fall apart (doubt), Chrome has you covered with a lifetime guarantee.

Troubadour Pioneer urban laptop backpack with bottom shoe compartment

Troubadour Pioneer Backpack

Troubadour does two thing very well: water resistance and comfort. They also have amazing pockets. Ok, so it does three things very well.

The Troubadour Pioneer can be best described as a jack of all trades. It's a sleek backpack for business days. A gym bag when you need it thanks to its bottom shoe compartment. And most of all, the highly water resistant urban backpack you've been looking for.

We can't express how nice Troubadour bags feel in person. There is something about the vegan leather trim and soft lining in the pockets that give it a certain je ne sais quoi. We wrote a Troubadour Pioneer review if you want a closer look at the details.

  • Specs:

    • Capacity: 23.5L

    • Materials: Recycled polyester, vegan leather trim

    • Weight: 2.4lbs

    • Padded laptop sleeve: Up to 16" laptop

Features that make the Pioneer a great urban daypack

    • 16” laptop sleeve

    • Very water resistant construction

    • Lots of small pockets inside for organization

    • Side pockets for water bottles and other essentials

    • Bottom compartment for shoes or extra clothing

    Sleek & Stylish

It would be impossible to list all of the different features the Troubadour Pioneer offers in a short blurb. So you will have to take our word for it that this backpack can do it all.

First of all, this backpack compact at only 23.5 liters that doesn't give you the bulky profile of bigger backpacks. This is a huge plus if you find yourself navigating crowded areas in the city. But what it lacks in size it makes up in organization. If you need a backpack with a spot for everything, then this is the backpack for you. There are plenty internal pockets for every thing from a phone to tech chargers. The outside of the bag also gives you two water bottle holders and extra pockets for small items like a phone or wallet. Pair these features with waterproof zippers and you have the perfect urban daypack.

    • Compression straps on the front for storing extra items like a jacket

    • Laptop sleeve in separate compartment for easy access

    A Lightweight Urban Laptop Daypack

The Db Ramverk features a unique design that can be best described as part lux designer bag and part tactical city backpack. On one hand, you have a PU leather exterior and aluminum metal hardware which gives it high end feel. But then there are sports elements like exterior straps and hooks for Db modular hook-up system.

As an urban laptop backpack, Db includes a separate padded laptop compartment that was designed to fit a up to a 15” Macbook Pro. Chargers, cables and tech accessories can all be stored inside the numerous mesh pockets that line the main compartment.

One feature that Db doesn’t get enough credit for is their innovative rib cage construction that allows for a lightweight and slim backpack without compromising on internal packing room. Instead of traditional foam padding, Db uses ABS “ribs” that are not only much lighter than traditional panels but also provides great protection to the inside of the bag.

Tested! Video Review

Water Resistant vs Waterproof

Before we talk about our top choices, let's get something straight. There's a difference between a waterproof backpack and a water-resistant backpack. And you should be honest about what type of backpack you really need on campus.

There are two levels of protection when it comes to keeping your stuff dry: fully waterproof and water resistant.

Left side: A roll top backpack being sprayed with lots of water with the word "Waterproof" underneath. Right side: Closeup of a little bit of water spilled on a school backpack with the word "water resistant" underneath

Waterproof: This means the backpack has a special coating on the outside fabric, sealed seams, and waterproof zippers or rolltops. It won't let any water in, even in heavy rain.

Water Resistant: This means the backpack also has a coating on the outside fabric, but the zippers and seams are not waterproof. If you get caught in a heavy downpour, water might seep through these areas. However, the coated fabric helps water slide off the outside, so your things stay dry in light rain or snow.

We tested the backpacks and rated their level of protection. We only included backpacks that are "water-resistant" or better in our list. Our ratings are based on hands-on testing and the overall design and features of the backpacks.

Now let’s move on to the backpacks.

Patagonia Black Hole - water resistant backpack for college students

PATAGONIA BLACK HOLE BACKPACK

The Patagonia Black Hole backpack is really popular among college students for a good readon. It's a stylish backpack while also being a high quality enough to handle daily abuse. Plus, it has a lot of compartments to help you stay organized and keep your important school items within reach..

Each Patagonia Black Hole is water resistant and will do great in a light rain. But it's unique design is the real reason we needed to include this pack on this list. The zippers for the main compartment and top pocket are angled in a way that prevents water from falling directly on them when it's raining. This makes it leaps and bounds more water resistant than your avarage North Face or Jansport backpack - that have their zippers facing upward. When you combine this design with a water resistant material, you have a reliable backpack for college and beyond.

One last thing - if you are tired seeing a boring black backpack, you'll be pleased to know that Patagonia offers the Black Hole in a ton of different colors.

Breakwater Supply Fogland 25L

We have to be honest and admit that the Breakwater Supply Fogland backpack might be a bit overkill for most college students. It's completely submersible and has drysuit-grade airtight zippers. So why use it as a daily school backpack?

How to Choose a Waterproof College Backpack

When choosing a waterproof college backpack, it's important to consider how you'll access the main compartment. This is where you'll keep your important items like textbooks, notes, and laptops, so you want to make sure they stay dry.

When it comes to waterproof backpacks there are three main types of main compartment entries you’ll encounter:

3 backpacks in a row. Left shows a waterproof zipper backpacks, middle shows a backpack with a lid, and right shows a waterproof roll top backpack

ZIPPER ACCESS

One type of access is through a zipper. Most school backpacks have a single zipper to open the main compartment. However, most zippers are not wateprroof, so you need to look for a backpack that has water-resistant waterproof zippers. Waterproof zippers are coated to keep water out, like ones made by YKK AquaGuard and Aquaseal.

LID ACCESS

Another type of access is through a lid. Backpacks with lids have a flap that folds over the main compartment, providing extra protection against the elements. This creates a barrier between the top of the backpack, where rain and snow can land, and the main compartment.

Usually, there is a zipper or drawstring underneath the lid to fully close and secure the main compartment. Lids are common in outdoor and technical backpacks, but you can also find them in school and everyday backpacks.

ROLLTOP ACCESS

A third type of access is through a rolltop. Rolltop backpacks have extra fabric at the top that you can roll down to close the main compartment. This type of access is very popular for waterproof backpacks because it offers great water resistance. When you compress the rolltop, it creates a seal and blocks water from getting inside. Rolltop backpacks are often seen in outdoor activities like biking, hiking, surfing, and snow sports. It's important to choose a rolltop backpack made of either waterproof or water-resistant material to prevent water from penetrating when it's wet. We have a helpful buying guide of roll top waterproof backpacks if you are interested in this backpack type.

To help figure out which type of backpack is best for you, check out our Zipper vs Roll Top Backpack guide.

Waterproof Materials

When choosing a waterproof backpack for college, it's important to consider the type of material used to make the backpack. The material should either be water resistant or coated to be waterproof.

Water resistant fabrics are woven tightly to stop water from soaking in. Some examples of water resistant fabrics are high denier nylon, polyester, and canvas. Nylon types like Cordura and Ballistic nylon are naturally water resistant and are good choices for a water resistant backpack for college. Other fabrics like X-Pac and sailcloth are also naturally water resistant.

But when it comes to making a backpack completely waterproof, you usually need more than just the fabric. That's why most waterproof backpacks have a coating to keep water out. Here are three common types of backpack coatings:

  1. TPU Coating: TPU is a type of plastic coating that provides good resistance to wear and tear. Backpack manufacturers like using TPU because it's less likely to crack compared to other coatings, while still remaining flexible.

  2. DWR Coating: DWR stands for "durable water resistant." It's a popular coating for rain jackets and outdoor clothing. It's breathable and strong, which makes it a good choice for waterproofing backpacks. DWR coats individual fibers, allowing water to roll off the fabric before it can seep in.

  3. PU Coating: PU is often used as imitation leather in bags and small goods. In fabrics, PU provides durability and resistance to wear, along with good waterproofing. It's breathable and lightweight. Many backpack manufacturers prefer PU coating because it's cheaper than TPU and other waterproofing methods.

Other Features to Look For

What size backpack do you need?

The first thing you should decide when looking for a backpack for college is its size. Larger backpacks (23L+) usually have roomier main compartments and extra pockets for smaller items. If you plan on carrying lots of text books, binders and notebooks around campus then a larger backpack may be the correct choice.

But not everyone need a huge main compartment for school. College students who use their laptops for note-taking may do well with a smaller and lighter backpack with a secure laptop compartment.

If you need help figuring out which size backpack to get, check out our Backpack Size Guide.

THINK ABOUT ORGANIZATION

When looking for a waterproof backpack for college, don't forget about organization. Most waterproof backpacks are designed for specific activities like biking, surfing, and fishing. Because of this, they may not have all the pockets and organization features you need for school.

Avoid choosing bucket-style dry bags and instead opt for a backpack with more pockets. This way, you'll have space for everyday items like pens, a cell phone, and a laptop. Waterproof dry bags are good for the beach, but they lack the necessary features for a busy day on campus.

WATERPROOF OR WATER RESISTANT?

It's important to know that you'll have more backpack options if you choose a water-resistant backpack instead of a fully waterproof one. Water-resistant backpacks are usually good enough for most college students. They can protect you from sudden showers and short rainy commutes. Unless you live in a place with heavy rain or snow, a water-resistant backpack should be sufficient for college.

Waterproof backpacks for college are available, but there are fewer options and they tend to be more expensive than water-resistant ones. So think about how much protection you really need before deciding which one to get.

Roll Top vs Zipper Backpack - Pros and Cons Visual Guide

Discover the differences between roll-top and zipper backpacks, and learn which backpack style may be the best choice for your needs with this visual guide.

What's the difference between a rolltop backpack and a zipper backpack? Is one style better than the other?

Among the different types of backpacks, two of the most common designs are roll-top backpacks and zipper backpacks.

Roll top backpacks are known for their waterproof construction and unique expandable main compartments, making them a popular choice for outdoor adventures. But they have also found their way into everyday carry thanks to some brands adding extra features such as laptop sleeves and extra pockets.

On the other hand, zipper backpacks are often the go-to bag design for school, work and travel thanks to their easy access to compartments and endless styles to choose from.

Both roll top backpacks and zipper backpacks have their own pros and cons, and in this visual guide we will delve deeper into the differences, so that you can make a better decision when choosing between the two.

Roll top backpack vs zipper backpack comparison

Roll Top Backpacks: Pros and Cons

Roll top backpacks are usually designed as one large main compartment. Think of these bags as big buckets with large top openings. Although this isn't true of all rolltop packs, these bags will often have less exterior pockets and overall compartments due to their straightforward "bucket" design.

What is a roll top closure?

Rolltop backpacks are designed with extra fabric on the top that allows you to "roll down" in order to close the main compartment. Most roll top packs include a buckle and strap to hold down the rolled fabric and keep it in place. This design is called a roll top closure.

Roll Top Pro #1: Expandable Storage

Did you know that a roll top backpack is expandable by design?

A big advantage of a roll top closure is that you can control the size of the main compartment. Simply, roll down the backpack for a more compact bag and roll up the fabric when you need more packing room. Simply roll down the backpack for a more compact bag and roll up the fabric when you need more packing room. This ability to control the size of the backpack is what gives a roll-top backpack its edge when compared to zipper backpacks with fixed capacities.

Another alternative is to keep the roll-top completely open to haul oversized gear. Since roll-top bags are designed like big buckets, this makes it very easy to haul large items on your back securely. This design feature comes in handy for outdoor activities where oversized items are common.

Shown: Got Bag Rolltop Backpack with roll-top closed to create waterproof seal

Roll Top Pro #2: Better Waterproof Protection

A roll top closure is often the go-to design for many waterproof backpacks, and it's easy to see why. The folding down of the fabric creates a natural waterproof barrier, and when paired with waterproof fabric, you get a waterproof seal with no way for moisture to sneak in. You'll often see roll top designs in dry bags made for outdoor adventures for this reason.

Unlike waterproof zippers that need to be maintained to keep functional, the mechanical nature of a roll top makes it much more reliable since there is less chances for failure. So if you want a reliable waterproof backpack with less headaches, stick with a roll top made with waterproof materials.

Shown: Inside a rolltop backpack

Shown: Inside a rolltop backpack

Possible Con: Fewer Pockets

The most basic roll top backpacks are comprised of a main compartment and not much else. When compared to a zipper backpack, you can expect less access points to your stuff and fewer pockets overall. This is most clear with roll top laptop backpacks that feature a laptop sleeve inside the main compartment instead of in a separate exterior laptop compartment. Although, some brands are getting better with this and have started including exterior zippers for quick access to tech or attaching side pockets for water bottles.

Other Common Roll Top Features

Since many rolltop packs are designed for outdoor use in mind, its common to find features like attachment points and external straps for gear. Comfort wise, it's common to see a sternum strap, hip belt and adjustable shoulder straps for a more comfortable fit.

These features aren't exclusive to roll tops but they are more common in outdoor backpacks.

Zipper Backpacks: Pros and Cons

Unlike roll tops and flap backpacks, a zipper backpack is any backpack that uses a zipper for its closure and is often the most common type of backpack you'll encounter for daily carry.

Because zipper backpacks vary so much in design, you have more options in terms of style and ability. Need an anti-theft backpack? There are backpacks with lockable zippers. What about a backpack that can open like a suitcase? Plenty of travel backpacks with zippers allow you to do just that.

Shown: The North Face Recon - Easy access to laptop and other essentials

Shown: The North Face Recon backpack - Quick access to laptop and other essentials

Zipper Pro #1: QuickER Access

A major advantage that zipper backpacks have over roll tops is how much easier it is to access the things inside! Zippers are quick and easy to use, while a roll top enclosure takes time to unbuckle the clasp and then unroll the top to gain the same access.

A great example of quick access is with laptop and tech carry. While many rolltop backpacks have a laptop pocket inside the main compartment, it is usually easier to access with a zipper backpack since there is no unfolding of fabric to handle before reaching the laptop. Many zipper backpacks also have laptop compartments that can be accessed from the outside of the bag for even quicker access.

Shown: Matein Laptop Backpack with 3 zipper compartments

Zipper Pro #2: More Pockets

Remember how we described rolltop packs as big buckets? Zipper backpacks have a much larger variety in their design, and as a result, they generally include more pockets on the inside and outside of the bag.

Zipper backpacks also often have many more external pockets than roll top backpacks. This includes zipper pockets on the outside for easy access to smaller items, extra top pockets where a roll top fabric usually would be, as well as separate zipper compartments for a laptop and other tech.

If having lots of pockets is important to you, then going with a zipper backpack will be your best bet!

Shown: Zippers on the North Face Recon backpack are not water resistant

Possible Con: Less water resistant

Whereas a roll top backpack has water resistance built into its design, a backpack with a zipper is prone to be less water-resistant. Unfortunately, most zippers are not water-resistant and can even act as weak points for water to leak through.

If you would like better protection with a zipper backpack, you can always go with a backpack with a water-resistant zipper or a dry bag with waterproof zippers. Backpacks with these special zippers are often more expensive than backpacks with regular zippers but may be well worth it for travelers and daily commuters who encounter rain often.

Conclusion: Roll Top Backpacks vs Zipper Backpacks

The differences between roll top and zipper backpacks are pretty clear once you look at them side by side.

In general, roll top backpacks are great for outdoor activities where bad weather is an issue or for those who want to control the size of their bags depending on what they carry that they. Their simple construction also make them more durable in the long run, since are less zippers and hardware that could fail over time.

On the other hand, a backpack with a zipper is a better choice for daily carry where organization and easy access matter. This is why so many work and school backpacks are made with zippers instead of roll top closures - ease of use. You also have many more design options to choose from, ranging from larger carry-on bags for travel to small backpacks for just the essentials.

Roll Top Backpacks

  • Better waterproof protection

  • Expandable main compartment

  • Less pockets and compartments

  • Minimalist style

  • Better for outdoor activities where weather is an issue

Zipper Backpacks

  • Easier to grab items inside

  • More pockets and compartments

  • More designs to choose from

  • Better for school, work and daily laptop carry

14 Backpack Strap Pocket and Pouch Options - Built-In and Modular

Easy access to your most important items! In this buying guide we take a look at all of your backpack strap pocket options.

So, you want a backpack with pockets on the straps? The bad news is that this convenient little feature isn’t as common as we would like. The good news is that you still have some options!

In this buying guide, we have researched what is available and have included some of our favorite backpack designs that feature pockets in the shoulder straps, as well as some modular backpack strap pouch options. Whether you need a secure place to store a Metro Card or quick access to your smartphone, there is something for you.

What are the options?

Built-In: Backpack Shoulder Strap Pocket

Backpacks with strap pockets aren’t common, but they can be found if you look hard enough. The main limitation with built-in strap pockets is that most shoulder straps are thin, limiting the size of the pocket. Some brands have creative solutions, like stretchy pockets for phones, but the majority of built-in strap pockets are only large enough to fit small flat items such as a credit card or cash.

Modular: Backpack Strap Pouch

Pouch for backpack strap - Chrome Industries Tech Pouch for phone, pens and tech

Photo: Chrome Barrage Cargo Backpack with Chrome Tech Accessory Pouch

If you want a shoulder strap pocket that can fit larger items like a large cell phone, a small notebook, or earbuds, your best bet is to go with an add-on shoulder strap pouch. These pouches are much larger than built-in shoulder strap pockets and offer more versatility in terms of what you can carry.

You can either buy into a modular backpack system, meaning a backpack brand that offers different modular shoulder strap pouches and pockets, or stick with the backpack you already own and choose a universal strap pouch. In this buying guide, we offer options for both.

Shoulder Strap Pocket Backpacks

Pacsafe Metrosafe anti-theft backpack with strap pocket that can fit earbuds

Pacsafe Metrosafe X Anti-Theft

Designed for optimal anti-theft security, the Pacsafe Metrosafe Anti-Theft Commuter Backpack will give you the ultimate peace of mind during busy commutes. While the most important pockets are located on the inside, it's the exterior of the backpack that offers the most wow-factor. You have a main compartment with an integrated lock, puncture-resistant zippers, and even the ability to lock the entire bag to a table or chair leg to prevent grab-and-run theft in public spaces.

The common backpack shoulder strap pocket is a small slip pocket for quick access to small items, but the Pacsafe Metrosafe Commuter goes a step further and offers a full zip design for an added layer of security. Here you can stash away small items like earbuds or a metro card and know they're going to be safe and sound during your daily commute.

Able Carry Thirteen Daybag backpack with hidden strap pocket

Able Carry Thirteen Daybag

Small but mighty, the Able Carry Thirteen is a highly water resistant backpack that keeps you organized without the bulk. Along with a protective 13” laptop sleeve, you have plenty of dedicated spots to stash essentials like keys, chargers, and a water bottle.

Osprey Arcane Large Day

Designed for everyday commuting and busy days on campus, the Osprey Arcane backpack is equipped with features to make life just a little bit easier. Inside the main compartment, you are greeted with an organization panel for your laptop, chargers, keys, and other daily essentials.

One of our favorite design features of the Arcane backpack is all of the discreet low-profile pockets that can be found around the outside of the bag. On one side of the pack, you’ll find a low-profile stretch water bottle pocket that stays against the bag for a cleaner look when not in use, while a stretchy strap pocket is located on the right shoulder strap for easy access to small items you need quick access to, such as earbuds or transportation cards.

Fenruien travel backpack with shoulder strap pocket

FENRUIEN Expandable Laptop Backpack

The Fenruien Business Expandable Backpack is for both, well, you guessed it, business and travel. Its secret weapon is an expandable compartment that allows for a slim 26-liter daily carry size on workdays and an impressive 38 liters of packing room when expanded for travel packing. Other awesome features include laptop and tablet sleeves, a USB-C charging port, and plenty of pockets for organization.

This backpack also has a hidden strap pocket for cards. It’s a great spot for those identification and public transportation cards you need quick access to, and a built-in zipper keeps it nice and secure.

Modular Systems: Backpack Strap Pouches

Think of a modular backpack system as an ecosystem of backpacks and accessory attachments that flawlessly work together. Once you own the bag, you can start mixing and matching extra pouches and accessories to expand your carry. There are a few brands that offer these kinds of systems, but for shoulder strap pouches and pockets, the ones we feature below are our favorites.

Chrome Industries backpacks - Chrome Barrage Cargo on left and Chrome Hondo on right

Chrome Industries Backpacks + Accessory Pouches

Chrome is known for their highly water-resistant and tough-as-nails backpacks (no, seriously, these bags are built like tanks) for daily carry and commuting. We are partial to the Chrome Barrage Cargo for its rugged construction and cool colorways, but the brand offers a ton of great designs to fit your needs.

Whether you are looking for a backpack strap pouch for your phone or easy access to a pen and small notebook, Chrome offers a few great modular add-ons that can be purchased separately and are designed to attach specifically to their backpack straps. You can also use the pouches as standalone organizer storage and toss them inside the pack. These little pouches are built as rugged as their backpacks and we wouldn’t except any less from Chrome.

Waterproof Backpack Features Explained

Choosing the right waterproof backpack is simple when you know which features to look out for. Here are some helpful tips to guide you through your next backpack purchase!

  • Rolltop Backpacks

Rolltop designs offer the best waterproof protection thanks to their unique “rolltop” enclosure that creates a natural seal to protect the main compartment from moisture and dust. Usually the more you can roll down the top, the tighter the seal and the better the protection.

This is why most dry bags are designed as rolltop backpacks! When coupled with waterproof fabrics a rolltop backpack is by far the best waterproofing option.

    Zipper Backpacks

Most zippers that come equipped on “waterproof backpacks” are only really water resistant. This means that they can protect against light rain or splashes but are still susceptible to water seeping through in the event of heavy exposure.

When shopping for a zippered backpack make sure that the pack is constructed with special water resistant zippers over regular zippers for that added protection.

    Which is better?

For everyday carry a zippered backpack may be simpler to use as there is less fiddling with extra material and buckles to access the main compartment. Simple actions like quickly grabbing a laptop in class or at the office are much easier with a single zipper.

But few zippered backpacks can match the level of waterproof protection a rolltop backpack can provide. If you are looking for a women’s waterproof backpack that will mainly used outdoors (sports, hiking, bike commuting) then we recommend with going with a rolltop for the peace of mind.

  • The first line of defense for waterproofing a backpack is with its exterior material since it is the largest surface area and where the bag is most likely to encounter moisture.

With water resistant backpacks you’ll mostly find fabrics that are coated with a waterproofing treatment so that the fabric can repel water. Dry bags and other highly waterproof backpacks may use naturally waterproof materials to make their bags watertight.

    Coated Fabrics

Polyester and nylon are the two most common materials found in backpack construction. On their own they do naturally provide a little bit of protection against moisture but not nearly enough for them to offer serious protection.

As a result you’ll often see these fabrics treated with a waterproofing coating like DWR (durable water resistant), TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane plastic) or PU (polyurethane) to add additional moisture protection to the fabric. These treatments act as a barrier between the fabric and the elements allowing water to bead and roll off before it has a chance to penetrate.

    Waterproof Materials

Waterproof materials are any material that is itself waterproof without the need for extra treatment. The most common are materials like TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride). By the way, those are just fancy terms for plastic and rubber.

Materials like TPE and PVC are usually heavier and thicker than a coated fabric. In fact, they feel more like plastic than an actual fabric but these materials are great for anyone who does activities near water and absolutely needs the protection of a dry bag. But for people who need a reliable everyday backpack, the extra weight and bulk can be overkill.

  • Even if a backpack is constructed with highly water resistant or waterproof materials there are still usually a few “weak points” that can compromise how waterproof a backpack really is. These weak points are usually found in the zippers and seams.

Zippers and seams are traditionally sewed into place leaving small holes that can lead to moisture penetration. The main difference between a “water resistant” backpack and a “waterproof” one is with their treatment of zippers and seams. The problems you’ll encounter with moisture penetration isn’t with the fabric itself (that’s usually waterproofed) but with water finding its way through the stitching.

A good waterproof backpack will mitigate these weak spots by either taping or stitching their seams to add that extra layer of protection. This is the main difference between a “water resistant” backpack (that’s usually just a regular backpack with some DWR coating sprayed on on the fabric) and an actual waterproof one.

    Taped Seams

Taping a seam is a simple waterproofing method that involves fusing a waterproof tape to the sewed seams to create a waterproof seal. When coupled with waterproof fabrics this seam treatment eliminates a way for moisture to sneak into the bag.

    Welded Seams

Welded seams are a step up from taped seams and can be usually be found in high end waterproof backpacks. Instead of stitching the seam and taping them to create a seal, the fabric is instead fused together with heat to create a watertight bond.

Since no thread is used in this method there are no stitching holes for water to penetrate - leaving you with a 100% waterproof seam.

11 Best Backpacks for Groceries - Cycling and Walking Grocery Backpack

Find the best backpack for groceries with this helpful buying guide! We review tough and spacious backpacks that are perfect for your next grocery haul.

Living close to a grocery store allows you the benefit of quick stops on foot or bike. But unfortunately carrying multiple heavy bags home by hand isn’t so convenient. This is where using a backpack for groceries comes in!

In this buying guide we’ll help you find the best grocery backpack that’s tough, roomy and comfortable enough for your next trip to the grocery store.

We split our grocery backpack recommendations into two sections:

The Large and Heavy Duty backpacks are the biggest and best backpacks for groceries we could find while the Mid-Sized and Lightweight section features lightweight backpacks for smaller grocery hauls.

The Timbuk2 Parker Commuter backpack filled with groceries

Using the expandable Timbuk2 Parker Commuter as a backpack for groceries

What to Look for in a Grocery Backpack

The elephant in the room is that there are very few “grocery backpacks” on the market. Maybe a brand has designed one but we couldn’t find many backpacks thats sole purpose is to haul groceries at the time of publishing. Instead what we focus on here are backpacks that can be repurposed for comfortable carry of groceries.

With that said we have narrowed down our options to backpacks that meet the following criteria:

  1. A big open main compartment

  2. Comfortable shoulder harness with chest and/or waist straps to help with load distribution.

  3. Heavy duty construction that can take on some weight.

Read more about our grocery backpack criteria

1) A Big Open Main Compartment

A large open compartment is a must for a grocery backpack so we focused on featuring backpacks that didn’t have too many extra pockets inside the main compartment.

We used half gallons cartons to test a lot of these bags. They are bulky, heavy and give a good reference point for size since most people are familiar with milk cartons.

Between 30 and 40 liters seems to be the sweet spot for a weekly grocery haul for one or two people with an expandable or roll top backpack that can add more room as you need it being the ideal.

Along with having a roomy main compartment you want it be easy to clean in case of accidental spills. This is where we are partial to Chrome and Ortlieb backpacks because their main compartments aren’t lined with fabric so they can be easily wiped down if needed.

2) Ergonomic and Comfortable Under Weight

We feature backpacks that have good ergonomic designs for their shoulder harness and back panels. Groceries can get heavy and thin shoulder straps just aren’t going to cut it. A semi-rigid back panel is a bonus to prevent awkward grocery items from poking you in the back.

Mission Workshop includes load lifters with their shoulder straps in their larger backpacks - these are small straps at the top of the back panel that helps stabilize heavy loads. It’s features like these add up to comfortable wear when hauling groceries.

Making sure you choose a backpack with a sternum strap and waist belt is important when picking out a grocery backpack. As the load gets heavier you will need a way to redistribute the weight evenly to help prevent that weight from just sitting on your shoulders. This is especially true with larger backpacks over 25 liters.

Heavy duty construction on display: The Ortlieb Commuter-Daypack City has bolted on shoulder straps

3) Heavy-Duty Construction

Our top picks are judged primarily by their construction quality because a grocery backpack needs to be heavy duty enough to take on heavy awkward loads like milk cartons and soup cans. We can’t afford a backpack that runs the risk of tearing under load because of cheap construction quality.

Some of the large and heavy duty backpacks recommend on this list are on the pricer side but that’s only because they take their construction quality seriously. These backpacks don’t skimp corners.

In our search we were partial to a few backpack brands that checked off much of our criteria - Mission Workshop, Chrome Industries, Timbuk2 and Ortlieb. These brands design some great bags for bike commuters and put emphasis on strong reliable construction and ergonomic design which is exactly what we want in a backpack for groceries.

The Chrome Urban Ex 30L as a grocery backpack (shown with 3 half-gallon milk cartons inside)

A Word on Shopping Carts

If you need to regularly haul a lot of heavy groceries and walking is your main mode of transportation then you are probably better off with a good old fashioned utility shopping cart. Shopping carts are relatively lightweight and can conveniently fold up for easy storage. You can usually grab one on Amazon and it will last you years of use.

For those who rely on a bicycle for transportation or don’t have to haul as many groceries - going hands free with a backpack may be a better choice.

Best Grocery Backpacks - Large and Heavy Duty

Mission Workshop The Rambler backpack for groceries expanded

Mission Workshop The Rambler

The Rambler by Mission Workshop is one of our favorite expandable backpacks and its easy to see why once you dive into all of its features.

And because small footprint when compressed, the Rambler can be used as a sleek daily work or school backpack and then expanded to fit your groceries on your commute home. An internal frame sheet, chest strap, side compression straps and shoulder strap load lifters all work together to offer comfortable carry of heavy groceries.

Chrome Barrage Frieght

What sets the Chrome Barrage series of backpacks apart are their bombproof heavy-duty construction and internal TPE tarp liner that not only offers waterproof protection but makes the main compartment easy to clean in case of an accidental spill. The exterior cargo net is also incredibly versatile and it can easily carry anything from a frozen pizza box to a six pack of beer.

The Chrome Barrage series of backpacks comes in three different sizes

We recommend going with the Barrage Freight for grocery carry because of its larger capacity and extra support with the included shoulder strap load lifters. You can also check out our Chrome Barrage Cargo review for a closer look at the smaller Cargo size.

Read more about the Chrome Barrage series

The Chrome Barrage series of backpacks are one of our top picks for anyone looking for a reliable grocery backpack for its heavy-duty construction, wide open roll-top main compartment and useful exterior net for extra cargo.

The main compartments of these backpacks are perfect for grocery hauls as it’s just one big open compartment with a single slip pocket that stays flat when not in use.

Below is a photo of the interior of the Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack which has an internal capacity of up to 22 liters. We recommend sizing up to the Chrome Barrage Freight for larger grocery hauls.

The exterior cargo net is the Barrage’s standout feature. The 5-point attachments makes it super easy to strap in extra items that would take up too much room inside the main compartment.

The Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack with two half-gallon milk cartons strapped inside the exterior cargo net

The Chrome Barrage Cargo’s exterior cargo net can hold two half-gallon milk cartons

One con worth considering if using as a backpack for groceries is that these bags are heavier than most with the smallest Barrage Cargo weighing 3lbs when empty and the Barrage Freight weighing 4.7lbs respectively. They are made with a heavy-duty 1050D nylon and are lined with 500D TPE tarp - two ultra-tough yet thick and weighty materials.

Like many work/school commuter backpacks, the compressed 26L main compartment is roomy enough to accommodate everyday items while still keeping a low profile. We found that you could still fit three half-gallon milk cartons at the bottom of the main compartment when compressed.

The magic happens when you expand the Parker Commuter backpack to its full 35L capacity. The main compartment will taper outward to allow you to fit heavier groceries the bottom and lighter stuff like pasta boxes and vegetables at the top. The Chrome Urban Ex grocery backpack unrolled and carried by its top handles

Chrome Urban Ex 30L Backpack

The Chrome Urban Ex has long been ranked as one of our favorite roll top waterproof backpacks and it performs surprisingly well as a grocery backpack thanks to its versatile features. Let’s list some of the ways the Chrome Urban Ex makes a backpack for groceries:

  1. The main compartment is just one large deep open area with few pockets to get in the way

  2. The roll top design allows you to adjust the bag’s size to your grocery load

  3. It’s built like a tank plus it’s completely waterproof - you won’t have to worry about rips or tears under load.

The Chrome Urban Ex comes in a 30 liter size (we recommend this size if you haul bulkier items) and a 20 liter size (go with this one if you prefer a more compact bag).

SansPeur offers an affordable laptop backpack with all the features you need for work and weekends thanks to a generous main compartment and plenty of pockets to keep you organized. Inside the main compartment is where you’ll find an impressive array of pockets for a laptop and smaller accessories.

The base of the BASEL is made from faux leather that mimics the feel of suede. In addition to offering additional protection this unique base gives the BASEL the vintage look of similar leather bottom backpacks at a fraction of the price.

Why choose a backpack with a leather bottom?

These days we often equate leather bottom backpacks with throwback vintage styles and many brands place synthetic leather on the base of their bags to achieve this look. But there are advantages to having real leather at the base of a backpack other than aesthetics.

Leather is a robust material that will add significant tensile strength and prevent heavy loads from ripping and damaging the integrity of the backpack.

A good quality leather can also a lifetime. Leather is known for absorbing scuffs and scrapes like a champ and it tends to develop an attractive patina with use and age. Because of this leather has the ability to age like a fine wine when compared to other materials that have a bad habit of looking worn and tattered with extended use.

The bottom of a backpack is often the most prone to abuse since it has the most contact with rough surfaces. Having leather at the base is an easy way to keep your backpack looking great over time.

Chrome Barrage Cargo Backpack Review - A Rugged Urban Commuter

The Chrome Barrage Cargo is a great option for anyone looking for a rugged waterproof backpack for commuting. We take closer look in this in-depth backpack review.

The Chrome Barrage Cargo is tough-as-nails rolltop backpack for city commuting that ditches fancy technical features for a tried and true design that gets the job done.

As far as urban backpacks go the Chrome Barrage Cargo has everything you need: a seriously waterproof construction, a tough abrasion-resistant exterior, simple-to-use rolltop access and unique cargo netting for extra storage on days when you need more room.

In this hands-on Chrome Barrage Cargo Backpack review we will take a look at all of the details so that you can make a better choice deciding if this bag is right for you.

Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack on man and woman

Where to Buy:

Materials and Construction

When handling the Chrome Barrage Cargo you’ll quickly notice that it feels heavy-duty. Weighing in at 3lbs, it’s definitely not a lightweight backpack but the tradeoff is that the bag is built like an absolute tank with incredibly strong and abrasion-resistant materials.

This isn’t a delicate backpack that you’ll have to baby for fear of losing its integrity. Throw in to the back of a truck (or against a brick wall) and it will be just fine. To be honest, the Barrage Cargo feels heftier then a lot of the “military grade” tactical backpacks we have tried.

The Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack in Swedish Camo color

Waterproof Construction

Although not submergible, the Barrage Cargo is as waterproof as a daily urban backpack can get without turning into a full on dry bag.

The pack itself is made with a water resistant 1050D Nylon exterior and a thick tarpaulin liner on the inside that prevents any moisture from reaching the main compartment. The tarpaulin liner combined with the welded seams create a waterproof barrier that can protect the inside against heavy rains and nasty splashes from moving cars.

Inside the Chrome Barrage Cargo rolltop backpack - orange tarp liner

The bottom exterior also includes a black tarpaulin section for further protection if you were to ever unfortunate enough to set your bag down on a puddle.

The bottom of the Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack showing nylon and tarpaulin material

We got our hands on the Limited Edition Swedish Camo version of the Barrage Cargo which sports a bright orange tarpaulin liner on the inside. Most other versions include a more subdued light gray color liner - keep this in mind if shopping for the Barrage Cargo in a different color scheme.

Serious Hardware

Chrome uses metal ladderlock buckles for the shoulder strap adjustments and their signature metal “seatbelt buckle” on the sternum strap.

Chrome Industries metal ladderlock buckle on the Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack

Chrome Industries metal ladderlock buckle on the shoulder straps

The buckles on the rolltop and cargo net are made of a heavy duty plastic. Although we would have loved to see metal buckles used instead we have no doubts that the massive plastic rolltop buckle can take some serious abuse.

Pockets and Compartments

The Chrome Barrage Cargo has simple compartment placement that makes it quick and easy to store essentials without overwhelming you with lots of smaller pockets, zippers and flaps.

The bag is essentially made up of the large main compartment on the inside and various pockets and attachment points throughout its exterior.

Inside the Main Compartment

On the inside we can find an 18 liter main compartment that is large enough for daily carry or packing for an overnight stay. Here is where you can find a single unpadded sleeve pocket for storing a laptop, documents or other flat items.

14-inch laptop inside the Chrome Barrage Cargo laptop sleeve

14” laptop inside the main compartment sleeve

The sleeve can fit up to a 15.4” Macbook Pro and we found it to comfortably fit a 14” PC laptop. Due to its lack of padding, Chrome suggests that you also use a separate padded laptop sleeve when storing your laptop here. The one problem we found with that recommendation is that even a 13” Macbook with a padded sleeve becomes too thick to fit inside the pocket. Therefore, we found that the only way you can really use the laptop sleeve pocket is by storing the laptop bare.

The silver lining is that the sleeve pocket is suspended an inch or two about the bottom of the bag to protect your laptop from bumps and drops.

External Pockets

Most of your pockets can be found on the outside of the bag for fast access.

Two slip pockets can be found on either side of the Barrage Cargo backpack for storage of water bottles, an umbrella or bike U-Lock. We found that up to a 24oz water bottle can fit inside these side pockets.

24oz water bottle inside the Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack side pocket

A separate quick-access zippered pocket can be found on the front panel. This is a fairly large pocket that covers most of the front panel and we found it to be a good place to stash a small notebook, wallet and laptop charger.

Small notebook and Macbook charger inside the front pocket of the Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack

The Cargo Net

The front cargo net is one of the Barrage Cargo’s most distinguishing features and what sets it apart from other rolltop commuter backpacks.

The Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack with bike helmet in cargo net

It’s the ideal size to hold a cycling helmet but we also found it’s great for many oversized items such as shoes or boxing gloves. Whether you are a daily city commuter or need a tough gym bag - you’ll be sure to find the cargo net more than useful.

Men’s size 12(US) shoes attached to the cargo net

What Fits Inside the Chrome Barrage Cargo?

The main compartment on the Barrage Cargo backpack gives you 18-22 liters of packing room depending on how much you “roll up” the rolltop. We found this capacity to suit most people who are looking for a daily use backpack for work, school or running errands. For travel, this capacity will give you enough room for 1-3 days of travel depending on how light you pack.

Keep in mind that you also have the external cargo net plus various pockets for additional storage.

INSIDE THE MAIN COMPARTMENT

  • Over-ear headphones

  • Small Camera Cube (8” x 7” x 4”)

  • 1-inch binder

  • Light jacket

  • Tech Pouch (8.5" x 6" x 2.5")

  • 13” Laptop

Comfort Features

The Chrome Barrage Cargo features a hefty one-piece shoulder harness that connects at the top instead of the typical two strap harness design. It is small construction details like these that really let us know the Barrage Cargo means business. This shoulder strap design provides a much stronger attachment point and minimizes the chances of failure at the top of the shoulder strap.

The Chrome Barrage Cargo backpack back panel and shoulder harness

The molded foam back panel has built-in airflow channels to kee you cool and comfortable. We found that the back panel on the Barrage Cargo does not include a stiff frame sheet and as a result the back panel does have some give in it.

What this means is that if you were to pack the Barrage Cargo with clothing, the back panel can round to the shape of the clothes. Place a laptop or books against the back panel and the back panel with stiffen.

Chrome Industries mini seatbelt buckle on the Barrage Cargo backpack

For additional support, Chrome includes an adjustable sternum strap that uses their signature seatbelt buckle. That little click you hear when you close the buckle is incredibly satisfying and definitely one of our favorite features on the Barrage Cargo by far.

Final Thoughts

What the Chrome Barrage Cargo lacks in specialty pockets and flashy features it more than makes up with its tough-as-nails construction.

This bombproof design is a breath of fresh air when compared to other technical urban backpacks that offer lots of interesting features but threaten with too many failure points over time. You just don’t get that vibe from the Chrome Barrage Cargo. Nothing about this bag made us think “uh-oh, I wonder how long this stitching will hold up…”

But who is the Chrome Barrage Cargo ideally for? We recommend this backpack to anyone who wants a reliable waterproof backpack for commuting and daily hauls. It’s utilitarian design might not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you are less than kind to your gear then we believe the Barrage Cargo is the perfect match thanks to its rugged construction and heavy-duty materials.

In conclusion we think the Barrage Cargo is a great buy if you know what to expect - a simple rolltop backpack that is built to last years and not just a few seasons.

14 Best Expandable Backpacks For Travel, Laptop & Commuting

Is an expandable backpack the one bag that can do it all? We review the best expandable backpacks for travel, commuting and daily laptop carry.

The concept behind an expandable backpack is pretty clever - instead of rotating through different sized bags you can simply own one that adapts to different carry situations. This allows for the same backpack to be used for daily commutes, weekend trips and everything in between.

Need to do some shopping after work? No problem, expand the bag to fit extra items! Need a daypack once you arrive to your travel destination? Easy, compress the backpack down to a manageable daypack size. The versatility built into an expandable backpack can’t be beat.

Expandable backpacks usually come in two different flavors: backpacks with expandable zippered compartments and rolltop backpacks that expand and compress as needed. In this buying guide we take a look at both and pick out some of our favorites.

Knack Pack Series 2 in Midnight Black color compressed and expanded

Knack Pack Series 2 expandable backpack

Expandable Backpack with a Compressed Compartment

Some expandable backpacks feature a zipper that opens up a compressed expanding compartment. These backpacks are great if you need a bag that can be used for both daily carry and travel as you can easily switch between the two modes. The extra room will stay concealed and out of the way until you need it.

Expanded space can come in the form of either a separate “travel” compartment for stashing clothing much like a suitcase or just an expanding main compartment.

WANDRD PRVKE backpack in Aegean Blue color with roll top compressed and expanded

WANDRD PRVKE expandable roll top backpack

Expandable Rolltop Backpack

Given the nature of their design, nearly all rolltop backpacks are expandable. Roll top backpacks comprise of one large main compartment that can be accessed from the top of the bag and held closed with a strap and buckle.

When you need more room you can “roll up” the rolltop to expand the main compartment and on lighter days you can “roll down” the rolltop to compress the backpack down to a smaller size.

  • Separate compartment with padded laptop and tablet sleeves

  • Large front compartment for organizing smaller items

If you are looking for an expanding backpack on a budget then the Matein Expandable Laptop Backpack is probably your best choice. You can usually grab one for under $50 and it has a few features that are normally only found in much more expensive bags.

The hidden pockets are some of our favorites features. On the front of the backpack you have a discreet flap pocket that can comfortably fit an iPad, notebook or similar flat item. The back panel also offers a sneaky zippered pocket that’s perfect for a passport or wallet. This hidden pocket is perfect for keeping your valuables safe when commuting and traveling in crowded areas.

As for quality, it’s worth noting that a cheap backpack won’t have the same top quality as you would find in a $200 travel bag. Our general rule is that when it comes to bags that need to protect your gear you should always buy the best you can comfortably afford. But our experience with Matein bags have been pretty positive. Their pocket placement is intuitive and the fabrics used don’t feel as flimsy as you may assume at this price point. In fact when it comes to cheap Amazon bags, Matein bags are pretty robust and their features are impressive for the price.

19 Best Sling Backpacks - Laptop and Tablet Side Backpack

Explore the best sling and side backpacks for laptop, tablet and everyday carry from top brands. Perfect for college, work or daily commutes these sling backpacks are sure to be packed with features you’ll love.

What’s a sling backpack? It’s a one-shoulder bag that has the capability to be worn on your back, side or even chest and they are great for accessing items quickly. Some other common terms are sling pack, sling bag or side backpack.

One thing you should know about sling backpacks is that they are usually much smaller in capacity than a regular two-shoulder backpack. This is because carrying a large heavy bag just isn’t as comfortable with all that weight on one shoulder. A heavier bag also doesn’t have the same functionality to just swing around for quick access which is usually the main benefit of choosing a sling backpack over a regular backpack.

So where does that leave us? Expect a smaller capacity (under 20 liters) and more of an emphasis on easy-access pockets and compartments. But small or less doesn’t mean worse.

There are tons of sling backpacks available today that make amazing everyday carry bags. Some have dedicated laptop and tablet pockets, others are fully waterproof and more than a few have really unique features that you’ll never know how you lived without.

Here are 19 of the best sling backpacks available today.
