A personal item is any bag that can fit underneath the airplane seat in front of you. If a bag is too large to fit underneath the seat it will considered carry-on baggage and will have to placed in the overhead bin. Travelers with Basic Economy tickets, are often only allowed one personal item bag and will be charged an extra fee for any carry-on item they board with.

It's the little things that make the Knack Pack it such a pleasure to use, such as lockable zippers, a trolley sleeve to attach the bag to a suitcase, and anti-microbial lining on the inside to prevent stinky smells.
Knack Packs come in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. For use as an under-seat bag, we recommend going with the size Small, which can fit underneath the most airline seats when fully expanded. Our testing: We found that the Knack Pack Series 1 Small can fit eight t-shirts inside the main compartment and an additional 20 t-shirts inside the expandable packing compartment, giving you a total of 28 t-shirts!
Although the Knack Pack offers the most packing space out of any bag on this list, it measures slightly over the 18x14x8 personal item measurements with a 9” depth (the maximum is 8”) when fully expanded. Just be careful not to overpack this bag when expanded and you should have no issues fitting the Knack Pack underneath your airplane seat.

However, this backpack really shines as a small pack for in-flight entertainment and comfort staples like tech, sweaters and a neck pillow. If you are looking for the perfect one-bag travel bag to avoid airline fees, you might one to go with another option with more internal packing room.

Unlike most other backpacks on the market, the tomtoc Votage-T50 Backpack was designed from the ground up to be used as a personal item backpack on flights. Its dimensions fall well under the coveted 14" x 18" x 8" size limit when fully packed. This backpack is also chock full of travel-specific features that many other backpacks overlook. Our favorite are the thick handles on each side of the bag to make it easy to grab the backpack from both underseat storage and overhead compartments. Add in a trolley sleeve for attaching the backpack to rolling luggage and you have the perfect companion for weekend getaways and business trips.
The main compartment on this backpack was made for easy packing. We could easily fit 2-3 days worth of clothing inside the main compartment. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on if you are light or heavy packer but it’s fair to say that the tomtoc Votage-T50 makes a great option for one-bag carry on quick trips.
Our testing: The tomtoc Voyage-T50 20L can fit 20 t-shirts inside the packing compartment. When you consider that you still have a separate tech compartment that can hold a laptop, tablet and accessories in the rear as well as exterior pockets for extra storage, you are looking at a lot of packing space for such a compact bag. We found that the front of the backpack will bulge outward when overpacked. However, even when the bag is stuffed to the brim it will still fall under the 8-inch depth requirement for airline travel.

The Fjallraven Kanken is a favorite amongst travelers and it's easy to why! The Kanken is made from a tough Vinylon-F material that keeps the bag's square shape so that you don't have to worry about going over the personal item maximum size when stuffing it full. This is the kind of peace of mind you'll be thankful for when bag on strict flights.
Don't be fooled by the Kanken's small size! Anyone traveling with a basic economy ticket on Frontier or Spirit Airlines will appreciate the wide open main compartment that can fit more than you think. This is thanks to the Kanken's simple construction. There aren't many pockets on the inside to take up much needed packing room.
Our testing: The Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 15 can fit 22 t-shirts inside the main packing area while still giving you the outside laptop sleeve for your tech and a pocket up front for smaller items. No matter how you pack the Kanken, it will always stay under the airline size restrictions.
If you want more packing room, we recommend going with the larger Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 17 which measures a little larger at 16.53 x 11.81 x 7.08 inches

Expecting rainy weather? No problem, the Bivy is made with water resistant materials and zippers (in fact, it's one of our favorite waterproof backpacks for women).
Our testing: The Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack can fit 24 t-shirts inside the main compartment making it a great option for one-bag trips. This bag does have a tendancy of ballooning when overpacking, making it wider than the stated 11-inch width but it does not go over the 18 x 14 x 8 maximum size in linear inches. In other words, even if you stuff it full, this bag can squeeze underneath the seat because it’s not structured. Was that too confusing? We hope not.

So, if you are looking for a bag that can be used for multi-day travel packing, you might want to look at some of the other options on this list.
Our testing: The Sherpani Soleil backpack can fit only 14 t-shirts inside the main compartment. This backpack isn't ideal as a packing backpack for one-bag travel but we do recommend it as a personal item when paired with a larger carry-on bag or checked luggage. When packed full the depth of the Matein backpack is closer to the 8" depth personal item limit but will still be compliant.

The JetBlue personal item guidelines are clear: if a bag is any larger than the 17x13x8 bag size limit then it is considered a carry-on bag and must be placed in the overhead bin.

Will small under-seat luggage fit underneath the seat in front of you? Maybe. But we found that 99% of carry-on bags with wheels will go over the JetBlue personal item size limit.
The problem with wheeled underseat luggage is that the spinner wheels and handles are counted toward the overall baggage dimensions, which wastes significant packing space. We also found that they are often too wide to be considered a JetBlue personal item and may not always fit under the airplane seat.

When comparing the two fabrics we found that the fabric used on the Series 2 has more of a lux feel while the fabric on the original Knack Pack feels a little bit more rugged.
Another change that Knack has made on the Series 2 is with the addition of full grain Napa leather on the touch points such as the handles and shoulder straps. This leather feels incredibly supple to the touch and adds a new level of sophistication when compared to the Series 1 Knack Pack.
The bottom of the Knack Pack Series 2 also includes PVC side and bottom panels. This material compliments the bag nicely while also adding extra wear protection.

While the original Knack Pack feels like great quality all around, the addition of nylon and leather really bumps up the Series 2 into luxury bag territory. The Series 2 feels like an amazing quality bag when handled and it is here where you’ll start to justify the jump in price.
Knack has decided to keep a lot of the same materials for the rest of the backpack. Both backpacks use water resistant YKK reverse coil zippers and the same branded rubber zippers pulls.
Both backpacks also keep the same antimicrobial nylon lining on the inside. The only difference is that the Series 2 Knack has toned down the original orange print with a more subtle gray print.
Size Comparison
Both versions of the Knack Pack keep the same expandable design that allows you to use the backpack for daily carry and travel as needed.
Daily carry mode: Model height 5’5”
Internally, the Medium Series 1 has slightly more packing room at 27 liters unexpanded and 39 liters expanded when compared to the 24-39 liter capacity of the Medium Series 2. Travel mode: Knack backpacks when fully expanded
Although the Knack Pack Series 1 has more internal packing capacity, it’s surprisingly not that much larger overall. Both the Knack Pack Series 1 and Series 2 keep a similar profile when worn.
Pockets and Compartments
Organization Pockets
The Knack Pack Series 1 is known for its clever pocket placement throughout the outside of the backpack. The Series 1 includes a top fleece lined pocket on the top, an accessory storage compartment on the bottom with elastic loops for cable management and Knack’s signature V-style pocket in the front for organizing business cards and other small items.
In order to achieve a more streamlined look, Knack has combined all of the smaller pockets in the Series 1 into one massive organizer compartment in the Series 2. Inside this compartment is where you will find all of the original organizer features such as a fleece lined pocket for glasses, cable loops, business card pockets and a variety of larger pockets for accessories like chargers, notebooks and wallets.
Main Compartment Comparison
The main compartment on the Series 2 has also seen some changes.
The main compartment design on the original Knack Pack is slightly larger at 27 liters and is a lot more closed off with the walls of the backpack creating a sort of “cave opening”. This design is great for preventing items from spilling out when opening the bag.
Although smaller at only 24 liters, the Series 2 offers a much more open design giving you easier access to the mesh pockets.
Both Knack Pack main compartments are lined with pockets on either side but Knack manages to squeeze an extra zippered pocket inside the main compartment of the Series 2 for increased organization.
Water Bottle Compartments
A great feature that Knack has decided to keep on the Series 2 is the hidden water bottle pocket.
On the original Series 1, the pocket has a stretchy mesh pocket design. This mesh is what holds your bottle in place and as a result you can fit a larger bottle (up to a 32oz Nalgene bottle). You won’t be able to zip the pocket shut when storing a larger bottle but it can be used in pinch.
The hidden water bottle pocket on the Series 2 replaces the mesh with an internal pocket design. This means that larger bottles won’t fit at all and you’ll really be restricted to slimmer bottles. This is something to keep in mind if you carry larger water bottles or tumblers.
Both bottle pockets are incredibly clever and we think Knack offers the best backpack with a water bottle pocket for those who dislike the sight of ugly mesh pockets.
Laptop Compartment
One pocket that Knack keeps in tact is the 15-inch laptop sleeve located right behind the back panel.
Note: When Knack says it fits laptops up to 15” they really mean it! We found that a 15.6” laptop is too large for these laptop compartments. A 15” Macbook or 14” and 13” laptops all fit perfectly inside the Knack laptop sleeve.
Expandable Travel Compartment
Not much has changed with the each bag’s expandable packing compartment. Both backpacks feature near-identical expansion designs that can be accessed with a hidden zipper.
Inside of each packing compartment you’ll find a similar mesh pocket and a compression area for clothing.
Since the Series 2 has less internal capacity than the Series 1. You can expect this packing compartment to be a smidge smaller at only 11 liters while the original Knack Pack gives you 12 liters. That’s the difference of a couple of rolled up t-shirts.
We found that both compartment can comfortably fit 2-3 days worth of clothing as advertised and if you are a light packer you could fit even more!
Comfort and Fit
Back Panel
The back panel is also different with a change in design and materials. The Series 1 uses a molded foam back panel while the Series 2 went with a memory foam back panel.
Comfort-wise, we couldn’t feel much of a difference between these two back panels even when the backpack was packed full. Knack does a really good job with both of these foam back panels and the pressure points and thickness are similar enough when worn. Only time will tell how the memory foam will perform over the original Knack’s foam.
Shoulder Straps
Knack features near-identical shoulder strap designs in both the Series 1 and Series 2. We found the padded shoulder straps to be incredibly comfortable under weight and we are happy that Knack has kept the same design. You shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken!
Stowable shoulder straps
Both backpacks feature stowable shoulder straps that can be tucked into the back panel but where the Series 2 improves is that it now include a side handle which gives you the option to carry the bag like a briefcase. The Series 1 only features a top handle but no side handles.
Which backpack is the better buy?
Is the Knack Pack Series 2 expandable backpack worth the upgrade if you are considering a Knack Pack? Although functionally both backpacks are very similar, there are some key differences worth considering before making a final choice.

Choose the Knack Pack Series 2… You want a more refined look with nicer materials and better internal organization. The addition of the PVC bottom panel and napa leather accents really elevates the Series 2 to a more mature luxury bag when compared to the original design. And the combination of the original pockets also gives the Series 2 a sleeker minimalist look and beefs up security (less pockets to pick!)

Delta is very explicit with what counts as a carry on on their official carry on page but they keep it vague when it comes to personal items.
They describe a personal item as “1 purse, briefcase, camera bag or diaper bag, laptop computer or item of similar size” but they don’t give you much in terms of size limit or dimensions.
That’s why we have decided to write up this helpful guide for those who want to bring their favorite bag or backpack on their next Delta flight. Let’s explore what counts and doesn’t count as a Delta personal item.
Delta Personal Item Size
While Delta carry on bags have a strict dimensional cutoff of 22" x 14" x 9" (or 56 x 35 x 23 cm) their personal item size limit is not so clear.
The key difference between a Delta personal item and a carry on is that a personal item has to be able to safely fit underneath the seat in front of you. Just about any item, including backpacks, will be considered a personal item if they can fit in underseat storage.
Most Delta underseat dimensions are 20” L x 15” W x 11” H
We say most because the underseat dimensions can vary by airplane, boarding class and seat location. For example, there is no underseat stowage in the front rows behind the bulkhead and smaller planes tend to have smaller underseat storage dimensions.
The above underseat dimensions are a good starting point to where you need to be in terms of personal item size since any bag larger than 20” x 15” x 11” will automatically be considered a carry on.
Bags Delta will consider as personal items include: a small backpack, purse, briefcase, camera bag, small musical instrument case. As long as it can fit underneath the seat then you are good to bring it on.
Is a backpack considered a personal item on Delta?
Yes, a backpack can be considered a personal item on Delta airlines. But it’s good to know the difference between a Delta carry on backpack and a smaller backpack that will be treated as a personal item.
Sticking with a backpack that is 18” x 13” x 9” or smaller will ensure that your personal item safely fits underneath your seat. It’s important to pay attention to the backpack size as larger backpacks will have to be stowed overhead and may be counted as carry ons.

Before you decide on which bag to carry please make sure to follow some simple guidelines to make sure you are prepared for any variations in underseat storage that you may encounter on your next Delta flight:
It’s better to go smaller than larger
Keep in mind that each flight can be different and that underseat storage sizes aren’t guaranteed. It’s better to go with a smaller bag or backpack than one you may risk having to stow in overhead storage. We recommend keeping your personal item 18” x 13” x 9” or smaller.
Keep your personal item backpack or bag flexible.
It’s always a good idea that your personal item has some give to it. This means avoiding overstuffed backpacks or hardcases that don’t have any give to them. This will come in handy on unexpectedly cramped underseat areas such as those found in smaller Delta planes.
Don’t compromise legroom if you don’t have to
Keeping your personal item on the smaller side will give you extra room to stretch your feet during the flight. A bag that is too big may be uncomfortable, especially during long flights.
